ARCHIVED Are Oats Really Gluten Free?
dilettantesteph replied to Natalya's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you. I wish that this had been made clear to me before I had that bowl of oatmeal some years ago. Good work getting this information out. -
ARCHIVED New Member From Vancouver B.c.
dilettantesteph replied to Detonica's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I lived in Vancouver for 16 years, near UBC, where I went to school. I miss it a lot, even the rain. Enjoy it. I hope you get better soon. -
Avenin in oats is similar in structure to the gluten in wheat, barley and rye. Some celiacs react to it as if it were wheat. I am like that. I was sad about it too, and it didn't help that it made me feel so terrible. There are lots of other gluten free grains to try though.

ARCHIVED I Need Help. Badly. :(
dilettantesteph replied to danaf617's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I get badly glutened I get uncontrollable D and can't go anywhere either. Sometimes I don't even make it to the bathroom even when I'm home. Well, sometimes, the kids need a ride somewhere, or something has to be done anyway. Finally I broke down and bought some adult diapers. I haven't actually gone in one yet, but it does give me some peace of... -
ARCHIVED I Have Celiac, But No Sickness When I Cheat... Help!
dilettantesteph replied to moats1234's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I heard Dr. Fasano give a talk in which he put up a picture of an iceberg. He said that the symptomatic celiacs were like the top of the iceberg, and the asymptomatic celiacs were like the part of the iceberg which was underwater. Most of them don't get diagnosed since they are asymptomatic, but according to him are in the majority. He also said how sad... -

I hope that works for you. I did the same thing and it helped me. -
ARCHIVED Help I Feel Like I Am Killing My Husband
dilettantesteph replied to ksymonds84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have gradually become more and more sensitive. I noticed problems with McCormicks spices before gluten free flours started bothering me. (I think, that was awhile ago). Fresh garlic is pretty easy to use so why not? You can dry and grind to make your own powder. -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free - Bad Tempers
dilettantesteph replied to kimberley's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Irritability is the first symptom that I can notice when I get glutened. I was pretty much always irritable before diagnosis. Fatigue is also one of my glutening symptoms. It takes awhile to figure out the diet so that you don't get glutened so much anymore. I hope things get better soon. -
ARCHIVED Are Oats Really Gluten Free?
dilettantesteph replied to Natalya's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I react to oats. The reaction is the same or even worse than my reaction to gluten. I'm not sure because I would have had to be crazy to sit down to a bowl of a wheat cereal like I did with the oatmeal. At least I didn't finish it. I wish that I had been careful enough to try only a small amount at first. It had nothing to do with the fiber. I got my... -
ARCHIVED Exercise Intolerance
dilettantesteph replied to tamika's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did both a 5K and a mini triathlon this past summer. I've never run before I started training the year before I did it. It is so great to be able to do things like that. I don't think I would even have attempted it as a teenager, not healthy enough. Before diagnosis I would take 4 days to mow our 1/3 acre lawn. I couldn't walk further than a mile... -
ARCHIVED Sending A Sick Child To School.
dilettantesteph posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My child (age 13) has been diagnosed for almost three years now. He is very sensitive to low levels of gluten and reacts to all sorts of cc so he still gets glutened a lot. The last couple of times were after using a "gluten free" denture cleaner on his orthodontic retainer, and after cleaning the garage and forgetting to carefully clean up afterwards.... -

ARCHIVED Exercise Intolerance
dilettantesteph replied to tamika's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was surprised to find how much having celiac had affected my exercise endurance. I had thought that it was age that was slowing me down as I wasn't diagnosed until age 48. Every year I do a rowing challenge, It is 200,000 meters between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I kept records of how I did each year. I had records going back to age 35 or so. My times... -

ARCHIVED Udi's gluten-free Bagels And Severe Nausea?
dilettantesteph replied to missingpasta's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Even us more sensitive celiacs vary in our response to trace gluten. My son and I are both sensitive to low levels of gluten, but he is much more sensitive than I am. Even if lots of sensitives can eat it, that doesn't mean that all sensitives can. Bottom line is don't eat it if it makes you sick. Others besides you react to Udi's. Even dedicated facilities... -
ARCHIVED Overreactive Nervous System/hypersensitivity
dilettantesteph replied to revenant's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My mental health issues weren't as severe as yours, but, they went away gluten free. I didn't realize that I had them until they went away. Now I notice them coming back if I get badly glutened. It took a few months for them to go away initially. I hope that yours go away too. -

dilettantesteph replied to Swimmr's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
"Just read the label" doesn't work for us super sensitives. Too much cc out there. I wish that it were that simple. -
I had fibromyalgia pre gluten free and get it back when glutened.

ARCHIVED Glutened...but By What?
dilettantesteph replied to K8ling's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am one of those super sensitive celiacs, and I can't eat peanut butter cups. I got glutened by my daughter once when she just came home from dinner out and hadn't brushed her teeth yet. Generally when she brushed I was O.K., I would bet on the Reeses. Here is a blog on food allergies which talks about a study that says that after eating another meal... -

I hope it isn't the agave syrup, I just got some to try. Hope you figure it out and feel better soon. What I do is reintroduce one thing per week to find out, after I'm better. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Neuropathy
dilettantesteph replied to TwitchyMcLurcherson's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I feel for you. I wanted to give you some encouragement. I have only minor neural issues. The longer I remain gluten free, the less severe and more rare are my glutenings. The neural issues took the longest to heal, it seemed, but they don't come back as fast either. Hopefully over time your glutenings will become less debilitating. -
If I eat something slightly contaminated only once a week, that can be enough to give me bowel issues every day. I also can have the one normal one followed by a terrible one 10 or 20 minutes later. Even one so bad that I can't make it to the toilet.

ARCHIVED 3 Yr. Old With Celiac And Still Not Gaining/growing
dilettantesteph replied to jaimek's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Some celiacs are more sensitive to trace gluten than others and can't tolerate processed gluten free foods. My 13 year old son and I only eat naturally gluten free whole foods for this reason. You could try that for awhile and see if things improve. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Nuts
dilettantesteph replied to Britt26's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am very sensitive. I buy them in the shell and don't eat the broken ones. Nutsonline.com has gluten free nuts.
