ARCHIVED Just So Down, Suggestions Or Advice?
dilettantesteph replied to Free-CountryGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I used to have a terrible time with depression when glutened. Now it just happens a tiny bit, after three years. That is the glutening and the depression. It used to be so bad that it is amazing that I didn't kill myself. It took quite awhile for me to get the hang of the diet. Can you stop eating in restaurants? Can you bring your own food when traveling... -
Sesame seeds that I have bought have had gluten cc.

				ARCHIVED 1 Year Gluten Free
dilettantesteph replied to fakename's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree with T.H. about cleaning up your diet. You don't necessarily have to make a big change though. You can do it in increments and see how far you have to go gradually. That's the way I did it. Now I am to almost no processed foods, but you might not have to go as far as I do to feel healthy. You could start with eliminating processed foods from... -

				ARCHIVED Questioning My Conclusion
dilettantesteph replied to momxyz's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
On the other hand, since you seem to tolerate it O.K., maybe it is a good time to eat enough for awhile to get yourself tested. Personally, I wouldn't do that because I just get too sick. My doctors even recommended against it. -
Like others have said. Four months isn't long at all. Healing can take much longer. Those of us who are sensitive to lower levels generally take much longer than that just to figure out where tiny amounts of gluten hide. Gluten free on a label is great for those who are only sensitive to more than 20 ppm. I sincerely believe that I am sensitive to less...

ARCHIVED Dates: Do They Make You Sick?
dilettantesteph replied to T.H.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I remember back when I used to make my own gluten containing bread that cleaning up with just water wasn't easy. Flour gets really sticky when water is added to it. I could see how on a plant it could stick all over everywhere on leaves and stems and then get deposited on the dates as they grow. I don't think that it would bother any but the most sensitive... -

				ARCHIVED Why-I-Dont-Bake-With-Xanthan-Gum
dilettantesteph replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thank you. That was interesting. -
This is important. Are you eating any gluten free bread, gluten free crackers etc. Gluten free products are allowed to have low levels of gluten in them. Some of us are sensitive to these low levels. Have you stopped eating them and are you eating only whole foods. My GI thinks that refractory sprue diagnoses come when the patient is sensitive to very...

ARCHIVED How To Handle Eating Out With Cc Risk?
dilettantesteph replied to Melstar23's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It depends on how sensitive to low levels of gluten contamination you are. Some of us are sensitive to lower levels than others. I am one who needs to live in a gluten free household. I got glutened every time I ate out. I realized that if we couldn't do it in our own household with all our extensive knowledge of the disease, how can I ever expect restaurant... -

ARCHIVED 6-Months gluten-free And Still Having Symptoms!
dilettantesteph replied to michellern's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Are you eating a lot of gluten free processed grains? Are you eating gluten free foods made on shared lines or facilities? Do you still eat soy? corn? You may be sensitive to lower levels of gluten contamination than most. I had to eliminate almost all processed foods to become healthy. Your level of sensitivity may be different than your brother's.... -
I also had this experience. When I returned to exercising, I began experiencing glutening symptoms. I am a person who needs to exercise. I eliminated more possibly cc'd processed foods and then I was able to exercise without symptoms. If I am glutened now, I can still exercise, just at a much slower pace. It seems to be a high level of exertion that...

ARCHIVED Christmas Day, Everone Brought Gluten!
dilettantesteph replied to norahsmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It sounds like a nightmare. I'm sorry that you had to go through this, and I hope that you got your place cleaned up adequately. You are going to have to put your foot down for the sake of your child. Relatives will be a good place to get some practice. You will have a more difficult time with the schools. You will have to get very good at advocating... -

				ARCHIVED Problems With Support Groups
dilettantesteph replied to Wise's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Someone in my local support group ate McDonalds fries in front of the group to illustrate how they were safe to eat. Then I found that he wasn't diagnosed! I can commiserate. -

				ARCHIVED Processed 'gluten Free'
dilettantesteph replied to williamsburg000's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Based on the posts I read here, I do believe that plenty of celiacs eat 20 ppm gluten without any problem. I'm not one of them. I can't even manage with 5 ppm gluten. I eat very few processed foods, and no processed grains. I wash and sort everything. I've found gluten grains in a lot of places where they don't belong. It's a pain, but you do get used... -

				ARCHIVED Feeling Frustrated
dilettantesteph replied to Jamieappleby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had the same experience and in my case it turned out to be an additional reaction to avenin in oats, and reaction to very low levels of gluten contamination. I had to eliminate most processed foods and I sort and wash my gluten free grains as well as most everything else. I also have to watch how I source my food very carefully. -

ARCHIVED Betty Crocker Mixes, Bisquick And Udi's
dilettantesteph replied to Franceen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found that over time I got more sensitive to trace cc and had to eliminate more processed foods. If you are eating a lot of other processed foods without issues that probably isn't it. I thought I'd mention it just in case. -

				ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing & Validity?
dilettantesteph replied to vbecton's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This statement is unfair. Having the genes for celiac and not having the condition is not a false positive. The test shows that you have the genes and you do have the genes. It is common knowledge that lots of people have the genes and not the medical condition. Certainly no one is hiding that information from anyone. Of course, that is using a positive... -

ARCHIVED Family Thinks I Am Neurotic...
dilettantesteph replied to norahsmommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It took a long while for my husband to get with the program. It was hard in the meantime and he would say things like that too. It made me angry, and made me doubt myself. He was probably just in denial. When I learned about the denial stage of accepting an illness it helped me to understand. Keep up your hard work being a good mother and he will eventually... -

ARCHIVED So Tired All The Time
dilettantesteph replied to AJoy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It might help you to avoid processed foods until you heal. Some of us can't tolerate the small amounts of gluten that they contain due to cc. -

				ARCHIVED Tired From Corn?
dilettantesteph replied to Skylark's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
If something is more than a little contaminated washing well doesn't work. I guess it would depend on what you mean by well. I do triple washes with soap. Even if you get a positive result that way, you might want to try corn on the cob when it becomes available to be sure. I know I couldn't eat Fritos, and I can eat corn. -
There is no proven way to diagnose celiac disease by looking at the eye. That person was just trying to sell you supplements. I hope that they don't contain gluten.

				ARCHIVED Tired From Corn?
dilettantesteph replied to Skylark's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think that just tiredness could be from low level gluten contamination. If so, and you continued to eat the stuff, your other symptoms would start too after time went on and the levels build up. I'm sure you know to try very clean corn for a trial, like corn on the cob you shuck yourself. I have found wheat in my bulk corn. There are shared fields,... -
The longer I remain gluten free, and the better I get about eliminating cc, the better my memory gets. I hope that will be the case for you too. The slightest glutening and it's gone again, but at least I know now that it will come back.

ARCHIVED Am I Really Back To Square One?
dilettantesteph replied to kaki-clam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Unilever owns Skippy peanut butter? While they list products and where they derive, they won't list it if the peanuts are cc. Since the Skippy is new, and maybe was started when the symptoms started, it would be a good idea to drop it to see if things improve. You may be more sensitive than some others who are able to eat it without issues. You aren...
