I still have bowel issues sometimes. I chalk it up to gluten cross contamination of my foods. As I get more careful, I get fewer bowel issues. I avoid almost all processed foods now.

ARCHIVED When A Product Says It's Gluten Free But It's Not

I don't know if you are lactose intolerant or not but... I thought that I was lactose intolerant but I looked at the lactose content of dairy and compared it to which dairy products bother me the most and it didn't make sense. I came across a study that found that breast milk can contain gluten. Open Original Shared Link I am one of those super sensitive... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Can Penetrate The Skin
dilettantesteph replied to Cypressmyst's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It didn't look to me like any of those references refer to gluten crossing external skin. With a DC and not a MD, I'm not sure whether Dr. Peterson has the technical expertise to interpret those studies. -

It is a lot easier when they give you terrible symptoms. -
ARCHIVED My Story - Need Help

I am one of those people. I was still very sick when I was eating prepackaged gluten free items. Try a whole foods scratch diet and see if that helps. Even with a whole foods diet, I had to take further steps to avoid contamination. I eat very little processed food at all. At the moment I don't eat any sweeteners. Also I wash everything with soap:... -
I did have a lot of foot pain that when away on the gluten free diet. I used every sort of insert possible but nothing worked. I went from being able to walk for miles to barely being able to walk around the block. I'm sure glad that went away. After diagnosis I was able to run a 5K. I hope yours goes away too.

Under 20 ppm is considered safe for most celiacs, but not all. There are some who react to much lower levels. I react to processed gluten free foods. In the study used to get that figure of 20 ppm, one participant had to be removed from the study due to a clinical remission. https://www.celiac.com/articles/1095/1/Research-Study-on-the-Establishment... -
I would skip the restaurants at least for now. Or, you could bring your own food and let your husband order. I am very sensitive and had to give up restaurants because I basically got sick every time, no matter how carefully I explained things or how much the restaurant was recommended. I need a gluten free household for my own kitchen to be safe, how...

ARCHIVED Where To Draw The Line
dilettantesteph replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've tried the Enjoy Life chocolate and unfortunately I can't tolerate it. I can do raw cocoa nibs. I wash carefully, roast and grind. It isn't bad, but now I can't find a sweetener that I can tolerate to go with it. -
ARCHIVED Refactory Celiac
dilettantesteph replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
We tried a shared household for about a year being as careful as possible and couldn't get healthy. We eat almost no processed foods. At present we haven't found any sweeteners that we can eat without glutening symptoms. We have to peel and wash just about everything. I think that there is a lot further that you can go in your diet before settling on... -
ARCHIVED Where To Draw The Line

I am very sensitive to trace gluten. I'm sure that I would be diagnosed as refractory sprue if I wasn't absolutely crazy about my diet. My son is the same way and also gets DH so he is a good gluten indicator for us. I can't eat any of the things that you mentioned. I'm very sorry to tell you that. Grains I buy whole, sort out the things that... -

We are two of a kind T.H. I have problems with all those things that bother you. I wash my quinoa carefully before eating it. For chocolate, I take raw cocoa nibs, wash them carefully, roast, and grind. That is better than nothing. Right now I am searching for a sugar. Have you found one? -
ARCHIVED Chronic Diarrhea After Being Off Gluten For 6 Months
dilettantesteph replied to KobysMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You could try a whole foods diet to see if that helps. That means no more processed gluten free grains. I am very sensitive and can't eat them. I buy my grains whole and sort and wash before eating. Or, is there something that you added/changed recently that you can try eliminating? I hope he gets better soon. -
ARCHIVED To Those Who Understand...

I am one of those who has to make all my own food from scratch. It takes more time, but...I feel so much better now and can accomplish things so much more efficiently, that I actually have more time. The improvement in health is totally worth all the extra time. I spend that extra time preparing food for my very sensitive son too. My brain works better... -
ARCHIVED Positive Biopsy, Negative Blood Tests
dilettantesteph replied to ToHelpMySon's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As a baby my son was very fussy. It seemed like colic. I wish that I had known about celiac then. He spit up a lot, but I didn't know what it was. He also had problems with #2 leaking out of the diaper making a huge mess. I didn't know what that was either. He was always very skinny and irritable. He had problems at school remembering things and with... -

My son was diagnosed at age 10. He was having bad reflux. He was throwing up 10 times a day and having bad chest pain from the reflux. It went away quite fast when he stopped eating gluten. I hope that encourages you. -

ARCHIVED 3 Years On, Still Sick.
dilettantesteph replied to up late's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia symptoms that went away on a whole foods gluten free diet. They continued on a standard gluten free diet. So did my other symptoms. Some of us are more sensitive to trace cc than others. That might be your problem. Take care. -
I find the same thing. Also sometimes things that I've been eating fine for ages start to bother me. I don't know if it is an increase in sensitivity or a change in processing.

ARCHIVED Diagnosed... But Still Sick. Please Help
dilettantesteph replied to cly's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You may need to watch out for cc in your diet. Some of us are more sensitive to that than others. For instance, I only eat almonds that I shell myself. Gluten free grains can be cc'ed. Look for the Tricia Thompson study. I hope you feel better soon. For me, depression is a big part of glutening. -
Personally, I am very sensitive. I had to eliminate cc possibilities, especially with gluten free grains. In particular the processed ones. I can eat cheese, if I source it carefully, but not very much milk. I guess I'm a bit lactose intolerant. Being nauseated isn't any fun. Hard to run like that. I hope you get things sorted out soon.

ARCHIVED Chicken Gluten Free ? Oats Ok ?
dilettantesteph replied to undiagnosedillness's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Good question. Damage and symptoms don't seem to be related directly. I have to be crazy careful not to have symptoms and some have no symptoms at all. Sometimes damage shows up later. I don't think anyone has it figured out. There was that Fasano study Open Original Shared Link on full text to see the full article) which suggested that most celiacs... -

I put your numbers into a BMI calculator: Open Original Shared Link You come out at the low side of healthy, but healthy. I wouldn't worry. Your body is probably just adjusting to the new diet. My body did the same thing. Some weight gain and some weight loss until I stabilized.
