  1. My GI doc wanted to do the endoscopy and it was 6-7 months after I went gluten free. She said I did not have to go back on gluten for this procedure (perhaps because I was in my 50s when diagnosed and had decades of damage?). I went ahead with it because it was time I also had a colonoscopy, and it made sense to just do both and get it over with. Well...
  2. Yes there can be ups and downs, but I'm thinking most likely cross-contamination. If not at home, perhaps at school, or a friend's house. I mean, it's hard enough for an adult to grasp the level of diligence you need on this diet, let alone a child (easy to think that just one chocolate-covered-pretzel won't hurt much, when you're 9). Is your whole...
  3. If your medical insurance will pay for genetic testing I'd do it, especially since you don't have to be eating gluten to have that done (you mentioned you've been gluten-free for a few months). A lot of celiacs on this forum (and out in the world in general) don't have a confirmed medical diagnosis (are self-diagnosed, in effect). My son was diagnosed...
  4. Udi's does produce "regular" baked goods, however, they have a completely separate gluten free facility for the gluten free items. Here's a clip from a write up on them, and a link to their website w/gluten-free info: "They recently started to produce gluten free, dairy free, soy free, and nut free products in a dedicated gluten free bakery. I sampled...
  5. ...wondering if others have had the same issues or if I need to look even closer at my new diet... Probably both! It takes a while to heal and that all depends on how bad your case is, how old you are at diagnosis, how long you've had it, etc There are ups and downs, even when you're being careful. Some (many) things, for me, were almost immediately...
  6. Hi sweetmelissa, Lots of things come to mind, and most I've just learned along the way (and many from this forum!). If you don
  7. Aside from the grocery shopping guides, Gluten-Free Grocery Shopping Guides Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link there's another out that can also be downloaded to your PDA device, etc., by Clan Thompson. I have the ceceliasmarketplace, was about $25 (worth it). For free: You can get online and go to websites, like Heinz for...
  8. Yes, indeed, got it backwards, but that is what I meant! But I hopefully did manage to convey that having an indicator of the gluten problem (allergy as it was phrased) is probably a pretty good diagnosis, in itself.
  9. Health Valley makes an Organic Cream of Celery Soup. Here are ingredients listed: Ingredients: filtered water, organic celery, organic cream, organic rice flour, natural flavors (contains organic carrot, organic onion, organic celery, salt, autolyzed yeast, whey, butter), organic corn starch, sea salt, organic celery concentrate, autolyzed yeast, organic...
  10. It is a genetic disease, so it had to come from one side of the family or the other. He could just be the first to show such severe symptoms. And you can have many folks that are asymptomatic, and diagnosed "accidentally." And often family members can show the gene and some gluten intolerance, but are not celiac (at least, not yet). The site below...
  11. You are wonderful! I think quite a few families with celiac children end up going totally gluten free in the home, but I don't think that many do so when it's just a husband and wife (or two people in the home). We didn't go totally gluten-free, but my husband isn't really much of a bread eater, nor much of a snacker. It was easy, last August, when...
  12. ooops, typo: So just the act s/b So just the FACT
  13. Hi, and welcome. From everything I've read (on this forum and elsewhere), there are often false positives when testing children. So just the act that the blood work showed some positive indication of a gluten issue tells me you may already have your answer (I don't think there are false positives!). They may just be ordering the endoscopy as confirmation...
  14. Definitely ups and downs, and an occasional accidental glutening. It's a process. I saw some things improve immediately! Almost all my neuro problems (pins and needles, ataxia, brain fog) have gone away completely (it's about a year now, since gluten-free). My GI doc said it could be up to two years (the healing process), which might depend on the level...
  15. Darn, that's so frustrating when you've tried to be so careful. Did anyone also tell you, when diagnosed, that you need to get a new toaster, your own cutting board, colander, etc.? And also, if you'd been using any teflon coated pans to cook with (pancakes, other wheat flour or breaded items), you should ditch those, too, and get new pans. Sometimes...
  16. Ooo yeah, you could even grill the squash ahead of time. Grilled ham slices and squash - that sounds like a nice plate. Have you ever tried grilling fresh whole green beans? You'll need one of those grilling sheets/pans with holes in it so the beans don't fall through on the grill. But they are always a hit - don't even taste like "normal" green beans...
  17. OK, I'm always telling everyone about these grocery guides (because they were such a lifesaver for me!) and, guess what, there's actually one that is: Gluten/Casein/Soy Free Grocery Shopping Guide Open Original Shared Link Then the only thing you'd have to pay attention to is sugar. Maybe you should check it out. For me, it was the best $25 I ever...
  18. I do know what you're saying, I think I've tried 15 different breads till I found one that was a keeper. Aside from finding more possibilities of specialized "gluten free" food products, there are many mainstream groceries that are (already) gluten free (Stagg, Progresso, Heinz, Hormel, Kraft...). You can find some gluten-free product lists online,...
  19. Just have to chime in - I buy the Udi's gluten free whole grain bread. It is the closest thing to "real" bread that I've found thus far. It's light, airy, good texture (not heavy and gummy like many gluten-free breads can be). I am a big Udi's fan. I get it in the gluten-free Frozen section at my King Soopers, but nearby Vitamin Cottage Natural...
  20. Did they also do blood panel to test for celiac disease, and not just relying on the biopsy (there can be false negatives with biopsies)? In the meantime, applesauce, mashed potatoes -- the keep it simple approach. There are gluten free breads, so I'll typically have a scrambled egg and a piece of toast for breakfast. An applesauce cup as mid morning...
  21. There are also gluten free grocery shopping guides out there to make your life WAY easier at the store. I'm talking about your regular grocery store, and mainstream grocery lines (Heinz, Hormel, Progresso, on and on). Gluten-Free Grocery Shopping Guides Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link There another out that can also be downloaded...
  22. There are also lots of mainstream groceries that are gluten free, in your "normal" grocery store (King Soopers/Kroger; Safeway, etc.). And many of those stores also have safe lists. Plus, there are gluten-free grocery shopping guides out there to make your life WAY easier at the store: Here are links to two different ones: Open Original Shared Link...
  23. Thanks for submitting the product review. If I come across that brand I'll give it a try.
  24. You may wish to reconsider purchasing Mission tortilla chips. There's been quite a bit of discussion about them on this forum, mostly stating that they used to say gluten free on the bag, but now do not. The reason for the change, from what I've read, is the processing has changed. Below I've copied a statement from Mission's FAQs on their own website...
  25. I don't subscribe to the Zeer service, but this is their own explanation of things marked with a question mark: "...For this reason, some products that appear to be gluten free based on ingredients may contain some gluten due to cross-contamination, and would be unsafe for people with celiac disease. The strictness of your diet with regard to cross-contamination...
