  1. I have taken melatonin nightly for many years with good results. I would like to try a time release. I wake up through the night still. In the 80's when I started, I took .5 mg. Now I'm up to 6 mgs. It takes me several years to have to take more. Recently I have increased my magnesium dosage and found it has a great positive affect on my sleep...
  2. If you newbies start a new thread, let us oldsters know and I'll follow you. I haven't been terribly punctual about posting so maybe those who are the most enthusiastic should make the choices. When I tried posting what I ate each day, that was a bit much. I couldn't keep up with it. For awhile we posted on Fridays but that's often a bad day for me and...
  3. Kudos to your daughter and her amazing recovery!! Also thanks to you Mom for caring enough to get a diagnosis and all the battles you have fought for her. She very lucky to have such a caring parent!
  4. As the other posters have pointed out, healthy dietary fat is very important for all of us. It is especially important for her. Whole milk is good but if she's trying to gain, buy cream and add a little each time she uses milk. Also she should be consuming butter never margarine. She can also snack on baked potatoes with sour cream, butter, cheese and...
  5. I would say your step father doesn't need to believe it; only you do. Don't worry about him.
  6. I have to say I'm vey tired of the old argument "these foods made you sick today because you haven't been eating them". You know I only eat pumpkin in the fall, but it has never made me sick. I only eat strawberries in warm weather but they've never made me sick. That comment is made over and over by people with no problems with food because they don't...
  7. Maybe if your husband and your family could come on the forum and read some things they might understand a little better what you're going through. Have you looked for a support group for celiac disease in your area? I know you'll be moving but even a few meetings with people who know what you're facing can be helpful. Maybe you'll even make some friends...
  8. I know it can be a lot to take in in the beginning. And forget trying to read labels and cook and keep a schedule. It makes a day seem like a year you just can't escape! But... it will get better, it will get easier and it does help so much to have the support of your spouse. That is huge. The rest of your family, just tell them the basics and...
  9. My husband is not gluten-free but he is very respectful of me. I might not be as sensitive as you either. I have seen other posters say they could not get well until their home went completely gluten-free. I'm sorry you are having to go through this. You could be sick through CC or it could be something else you are sensitive to. Unless you have the rare...
  10. I'm glad to see you're feeling better. You've been fightin' the feeling for a long time! As for anxiety, I take St. Jon's Wort. I started for the seasonal blues but the last two years have been economic stress busters and I take it every day. My DH takes it now too. It really has been tough and he gets down about it sometimes. It does take the edge...
  11. Congratulations on your graduation!! My daughter graduated 2 weeks ago and we went back to my son's place and grilled some chicken. It was beautiful weather and we all just enjoyed being together. This Saturday she is coming here and we're throwing her an open house just for her in her hometown. I'm the one with celiac disease so I won't really have any...
  12. Many posters have reported they felt worse before they felt better. It seems to be common. I felt increasingly well but I also messed up a lot. I wish I had discovered this forum sooner!
  13. It sure sounds like one. That's similar to the way I react. It could be CC or maybe they slapped ii onto a bun in the kitchen then remembered and just removed the bun. The restaurant next to my flower shop always makes burgers for me but the last time I had a mild reaction. I've never had that before. I don't know what was different.
  14. For me, the Indiana humidity is the killer! I agree with your advice to look for sneaky gluten if your DH isn't clearing up. I cannot handle topicals with gluten, it could be I'm allergic to wheat also. I don't know, I just have to avoid it in any product. I did have sneaky gluten kick up my DH twice since going gluten-free. It really took some investigation...
  15. Sorry, I'm one of the guilty ones who hasn't been posting. I have had a very busy month! My daughter's open house this Saturday will end the run of craziness. I have been continuing with my diet though and have lost 8 lbs. as of this morning. I read about increasing dietary fat to combat overweight, insulin resistance and heart related conditions...
  16. I react slightly to ham also. I guessed it was the nitrates. I now buy nitrate free and gluten-free Hormel naturals.
  17. Did you buy those from the deli where they use the slicer for other kinds of meats and cheeses? If they weren't prepackaged in plastic, I would put that down to CC.
  18. Maybe you could visit a nursing home and see all the illnesses that can befall us late in life. You are going to be in that age group before you know it. Many of those maladies you see in the nursing home can be attributed to untreated celiac disease in those of us with the disease. You can pity those you see and fear you might be there soon but if you...
  19. Welcome to the Forum! I think you son is so lucky to have such a caring parent. I also see many people say they would never do the diet because it is too hard for them. I don't have much respect for them. It's your child and they only have so many chances for good health. The diet is tricky in the beginning but it get's easier as time goes on. Soon...
  20. THe fatigue can be helped with B12, magnesium and D. If you can, have your levels tested and don't forget to test for iron. You haven't been taking in nutrients and you may need a boost to get back on track. I don't know what you mean by messed up mornings. If you mean trips to the bathroom, I have several of those in the morning no matter what...
  21. I agree that the B12, magnesium and D all helped my energy levels a lot. Get the sublingual B12 (methyl kind). Also are you eating enough dietary fat? It sounds like your diet is limited. You need the fats to support your muscles (like your heart) and nerves. If you're avoiding dairy, you can use some cheeses that work for you, nuts and olive oil. Avocados...
  22. I did have ups and downs in the first year. It was mostly do to my own stupidity. I would take for granted something was gluten-free and not check. Or I did something as simple as share jelly jars. I also had to learn that my body just doesn't like some teas or many alternate grains. I've been on a very low card diet and I'm actually feeling the best...
  23. I'm glad you're feeling a litttle better. I would add that you mentioned you eat a lot of fruits. I had a problem with those in the beginning. They would make me bloat. Now I can handle them. You need further healing before you can handle everything. Do you judge your friends by the size of their stomach? I'll bet you don't. Don't cut yourself...
  24. I agree with the above advice. Eat basic whole foods to begin with and give yourself a month or so to get used to eating that way. You can eat corn tortillas in place of any bread. I like them toasted. It's time to do a kitchen purge. Look at every spice and package in your kitchen. Anything with gluten, goes. Also replace any spice you may have...
