  1. Wish I could come to Portland!!
  2. Most of us have had go 'rounds with our dr's. I just decided that for me, I need to look after myself unless the oppurtunity comes along where I could have a dr with celiac disease him/herself. I just gave up the idea that my dr is really going to take care of me. A part of it is my own fault, I never told him all the symptoms I had, it made me...
  3. If it's been OK, it is probably still OK. It is easy to start obsessing but sometimes I have to give myself a good hard mental shake to be sensible and not go off the deep end about a product that has worked for me.
  4. IMO I would not call the blood tests the gold standard. Read the forum and you'll come across patient after patient who tests negative but had celiac or gluten intolerance. This is your health and the consequences of ignoring the possibilty of this particular intolerance can be grave. Read the signatures of people on this forum and discover irreperable...
  5. Yeah, me either. What a dork I can be sometimes! Glad you're checking yours.
  6. What I read about it was that the companies were awaiting final approval to legally use stevia. Then I think in the last few days I saw that Coke was almost ready to launch. I'll have to search for the link. I usually read Wall Street Journal so it might have been there. After being so sick, I looked at my packet of stevia and it clearly said flour...
  7. Thumbs up for your family! Their great. Isn't receiving a package at your door the best surprise?
  8. I've been pleasantly surprised with my locally owned restaurants. They always take care of me. They are more friendly and accommodating than many chains. But for events I always take my own food now and also eat before leaving. I'm over feeling out of place. I'm the keeper of my own health and others can really have no concept of the damage their food...
  9. Welcome to the forum. You are going to get answers to any questions you ask here, problem is, we all have different opinions and you are going to have to sort through all responses for your personal answers. I didn't have access to much info when I started the GFD a year ago. So I did a lot of things wrong in hindsight. I have a cutting board my son made...
  10. Stevia has been around for awhile. I turned to it when I could no longer tolerate artificial sweeteners. BEWARE!! Take a warning; I hadn't used it for a long time but found a few packets in the bottom of my sweetener container. I had the worst gluten reaction of the whole year!! I hadn't checked the packet, after all, I used to drink it. It was...
  11. I'm sorry you are still feeling so bad. Can you eat potatos and rice? Two basic foods that can be the basis for any meal and you can add some healthy oil to it to make it higher calorie for you. The avocados are an excellant choice. I don't know about some of the fruits. I had a really hard time digesting those for awhile. The B-12 is excellant. I feel...
  12. Have you checked your cupboard maybe for items you normally buy but may have changed their formulas? My husband bought seasoned salt that was generic and I stupidly used it for awhile without checking it. Wheat. Any drywall. wallpapering going on in her world? Playdoh or art supplies with gluten? Could you keep a food/symptom diary for a few days...

    ARCHIVED Soy-doh

I heard about an article in the New York Times about a Purdue student who invented Soy-Doh and makes it in his home for sale!! I don't have the link but if you go to the Times website and enter Soy-Doh in the search the article will come up. He makes it with cool scents like root beer. How fun is that?
  14. I had incredible shoulder pain for years which I assumed was arthritis or bursitis. All gone with the GFD. I had no idea that it would take care of that pain! No more carpal tunnel either. I haven't had severe pain from that in a long time but the mild stuff is gone.
  15. Usually I just ride it out and try to eat very simply. The sublingual B-12 helps me tremendously to shorten the illness but I don't take anything else. I feel if I do, I'll go too much the "other way".
  16. There are three issues with wheat. It took me a long time to wrap my brain around it. Wheat allergy; those tests you took to see if you had a histamine reaction to wheat. You know, like you might have to ragweed? You tested negative, no histamine reaction. You are not allergic. Celiac disease; you start with a blood panel for celiac disease...
  17. When I'm feeling bad, chicken noodle soup is my fallback food. I use chicken broth with a little chicken and rice noodles or bean threads. Also tea is very soothing to my tummy. Hope you feel better soon!!
  18. I was so grateful to be diagnosed and to heal and feel normal again, I didn't have much of that kind of anger. I figured it was a small price to pay. I was having issues with restaurants not getting it and especially family but then a couple of people in my small town came down with incurable cancer and suffered terribly. I decided I should adjust...
  19. Great article! I like that they showed the struggle with the diagnosis. That could help others have that lightbulb moment!!
  20. I also have no problem with Larabars but I agree the flavor is borderline. But...in a pinch especially when traveling and my blood sugar is getting low, they do the trick. And with some hot tea, they are tolerable. I think I'm just addicted to my sugar. I grew up in a candy making family and it's a tough one to kick.
  21. That is a great idea! THe one time I provided a snack and didn't ask about special needs, one child couldn't participate and I was mortified. I tried to do better after that. I think your having a plan ahead of time is a proactive one. The one thing that comes to mind are Lara bars. They are my back up. Of course if they don't have to keep indefinately...
  22. Thanks, David! It looks yummy!! The website looks to have many other tasty recipes!!
  23. I'd like to hear the dream foods of members then ask if anyone can convert their recipes for all of us. I cannot eat ice cream and read about the company that makes it with coconut milk and agave. They looked delicious but out of my budget. Can anyone make a great dairy free ice cream with the coconut milk that I like?
  24. I don't want to scare you but to be honest, I don't think I would have the endoscopy without talking to the dr. I had one, for gallbladder rule out symptoms, but I was nervous enough and talking with the dr eased a lot of my fear. It was really no big deal but I reacted normally to the drugs and it sounds like you are a special case.
  25. Just found some in my local Kroger so I bought 4 cans. I hope they don't drop it. It's so convenient to use!!
