  1. Here's another option. Maybe she could contract a small decorated cake for the cake table but make all the sheet cakes, the ones you serve to everyone anyway, gluten free. I am a florist and lots of weddings do this because is less expensive than to make a massive cake that feeds everyone. All guests are feed from the sheet cakes. A regular bakery could...
  2. Congrats!! It's been great converting old recipes. Doesn't it give you a feeling of normalcy and control over celiac disease?
  3. I ended up buying both and now I am using half and half in every recipe to use them up. I have had no disapointments using this method. My baking is much improved when adding this to the mix, that's for my converted recipes.
  4. My baking has really improved, measured by the crumbly factor, since I added Guar or Xantham to any mix. They always taste good but now I can eat them with my hands instead of a spoon!
  5. I'm one of those with no official dx. I don't feel the need and will not go back on Gluten , uh-uh. My children are grown and don't need my test results if they choose to be tested. Also I'm a little concerned how my insurance carriers will treat me with a dx. I've heard rumores. You know how you feel gluten-free, if you choose not to do a challenge...
  6. Some soft drinks bottled in other countries use barley malt. Sorry you're feeling bad.
  7. Have your vitamin levels been checked for defiency? What about thyroid?

    ARCHIVED Where To Now?

Welcome to the forum. You are in the right place for infomation and friendly advice. Since you are dx'd, now is the time to start the gluten free diet, if you haven't already. You said your main symptom is DH, but you may find, like I did that many other health issues you never imagined could be related to gluten improve or resolve completely when you...
  9. Did they add coloring to their vanilla? I found I am sensitive to some food products with caramel coloring even though it shouldn't be a problem in the US. My reactions vary but always have D and gas but other symptoms can crop up. It is more severe than before the gluten-free diet. But that was true when I went off fresh dairy too. Hope you feel better...
  10. O+ here. British, German and Swiss decent.
  11. You know it's so hard at first and you're right; other people don't get it and find it just as hard to accept as we do. Remember, they haven't felt all the nasty symptoms we have or read all the info about it. The majority of them aren't going to ever get it and the rest will do their best but can never understand it completely without walking in your shoes...
  12. Those symptoms sound oh so familier, Jan. It certainly could be celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Sounds at least like your dr knows what to look for. So many doc's don't. See what the other test results are but the positive biopsy sounds like the dx you need. Blood tests often give false negatives. You could try the diet even if your bloods tests...
  13. I'm glad you are feeling better. I resolved this year to be a rabid dog concerning my food. Those reactions are no fun, no way, no how.
  14. The mood swings are incredible if I am glutened. I usually warn everyone around me and apologize in advance. It's well worth it to committ to the gluten-free diet.
  15. I just wanted to welcome you to the forum. You have received some great advice here and the only thing I can add echos their posts. Keep the food simple for now. Only add new foods one at a time and before you know it you'll have a whole selection of foods and meals to choose from. Include your child and other family members in food prep and shopping....
  16. I agree with all the other posters with drinking lots of tea. The warmth seems to calm my stomach somewhat and you need all the liquids you can get if you have D like me. My favorite is Constant Comment decaf, it's just yummy and soothing. I sometimes also feel ravenous when glutened so I allow myself to eat anything that's safe as much as my body...
  17. Did you take her off dairy? Most of us have to leave dairy alone for a few months during the initial healing. She might be able to go back to it later. Sounds like the gluten-free diet is helping her but her continued paleness and not continuous days pain free may suggest an underlying problem with dairy. You don't have to test for it, you can just change...
  18. I think that's a great idea!! My resolution is to learn to use my digital camera and take one picture a day every day this year!
  19. What if you just mixed a little in each time with his? Eventually he would be a convert and not even notice.
  20. I had two different rashes when I went gluten-free. One cleared up within a few days, the blistery one you saw in the pictures. I only had a few spots of that at the time. The other took weeks to clear up and for the discoloration of the skin to fade. However, as soon as I went gluten-free, the itchiness backed off noticably each day I was "clean". The...
  21. I don't know if I have the answer you want to hear. I dx'd myself through an elimination diet. I didn't do any testing at all. So how I would have tested, who knows? I refuse to eat gluten again to find out. No one has to dx a gluten free diet for you to try it. You know your body better than anyone else. You know something is wrong and you have...
  22. My persistant cough was due to postnasal drip from congestion. After I went gluten-free, I found the congestion was due to the gluten and has since gone bye-bye. I was so grateful to not have to take antihistamine constantly and wake up coughing at night. Hope it clears up for you too.
  23. For fast food, I like the baked potatoes at Wendy's with a side of chili. Yum...Chips and salsa are one of my faves but I use the chopped tomatoes with green chilies from Walmart and mix a can of that with a block of cream cheese. It's really filling too. Sometimes I just eat that for a meal. Some canned chili is gluten-free. You have to read the label...
  24. For me, I have to be upfront with people. They may be surprised if they offered something I can't have but they remember for the next time. I usually temper it with something like."Oh shoot, that looks so delicious but if it even touched a crumb, I can't have it." When you don't tell someone, you run the risk of offending them as they use their imagination...
  25. I'm so happy you are with people that are so caring since you live with them for most of your year. Family members could learn a lesson or two from your crew!
