ARCHIVED Eczema
Mother of Jibril replied to MollyBeth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Both of my kids have had problems with eczema... My son is fine as long as we don't feed him dairy, corn, or gluten. Unfortunately, our daughter was born first and we didn't understand the connection between eczema and food intolerances! Her pediatrician gave us samples of Elidel, which is a non-steroid cream for eczema. We found that Vaseline helped... -
There's an important difference between peanuts and tree nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds, pistachios, brazil nuts, etc...). Peanuts are actually legumes and they grow underground. In addition to peanut allergies, people can have problems with aflatoxins (a type of mold) that commonly grows on peanuts. Tree nuts are the edible seeds of fruits that grow on...

ARCHIVED Anti-anxiety...short Term Medication- Suggestions?
Mother of Jibril replied to wschmucks's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also suffered with mild depression for many years. Then I went through a MAJOR episode two years ago during a very stressful time in my life. The suggestions that other people have given you are definitely good, but vitamin D is what really does the trick for me! This website is a good source of information (Open Original Shared Link). I've been taking... -
ARCHIVED It's Official... My Mom Has Celiac!
Mother of Jibril posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Six months ago I was diagnosed with autoimmune hypothyroidism. I kept reading about a possible connection to gluten... and I was having abdominal pain... so after checking with an allergist I went on a gluten-free diet. Wow. What a HUGE difference it made. I wasn't able to get an accurate blood test, but the DQ8 gene, a couple of other autoimmune disorders... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Finding New Foods
Mother of Jibril replied to Guhlia's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Here's the brand of coconut yogurt I've seen at my co-op: Open Original Shared Link If your local grocery store doesn't carry it you could always ask! The little co-ops are especially good about ordering specialty foods. Simply Fruit is delicious Kind of expensive, but it's perfect for toddlers since it comes in little pieces and softens up... -
ARCHIVED Could This Be Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Mother of Jibril replied to hadabaday2day's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Projectile vomiting in a baby can also be caused by casein (cow's milk protein) intolerance. My son gets eczema on his face from the slightest bit of casein or corn. I refuse to try gluten. However... if your son had an anaphylactic reaction to formula, that's a true (IgE) allergy, not just an intolerance (although it's possible to have an allergy... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Finding New Foods
Mother of Jibril replied to Guhlia's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I thought your daughter didn't like rice cakes and rice crackers? Honestly, if you're strict about gluten and corn (I am, so I know from personal experience), that eliminates about 95% of processed foods from consideration. The only processed food I'm still eating on a regular basis is dark chocolate. Even rice cakes will give me abdominal pain ... -
ARCHIVED Confused, Need Clarification On Test Results
Mother of Jibril replied to lisa49's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome to the group! Yes, your son has celiac disease. False negatives are pretty common, but false positives are not. Ttg is very specific for celiac disease. Considering that your son is having problems with his heart, it's very, VERY important that you get him on the gluten-free diet and follow it to a T. This includes not just wheat, but also... -
ARCHIVED Types Of Tests
Mother of Jibril replied to Char83's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Unfortunately, there are quite a few things that can cause those symptoms... Eliminating gluten and dairy is a good place to start. Taking calcium supplements without magnesium can make constipation worse. I also have hypothyroidism (constipation is one of the classic signs) and I'm intolerant to corn. I had the same symptoms as you for years! Unfortunately... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Finding New Foods
Mother of Jibril replied to Guhlia's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
What about vegetables? Steamed broccoli, carrots (steamed or boiled until your daughter can reliably eat them without choking), slices of zucchini. strips of red pepper, slices of mushrooms (canned would be fine for a trip... most are gluten-free), stems of fresh parsley, fresh peas and green beans (my daughter loves the crunchy texture)... Hummus makes... -
ARCHIVED Confused
Mother of Jibril replied to ycavaz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My husband is like that too... he is NEVER sick. We've been married for 12 years and I've only seen him sick maybe three or four times. He's on board with the GFCFMF diet... he always wanted me to eat more fruits and vegetables ... but he doesn't understand anything about autoimmune disorders and he's not really willing to learn (which is a bit frustrating... -
ARCHIVED Eczema
Mother of Jibril replied to MollyBeth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Two months after I stopped eating gluten I started getting an itchy rash (first on my hands and then also my arms) when I got cross-contaminated. I never had that before. My dermatologist did a biopsy and said it was "acute dermatitis" (same thing as an "id reaction" or "autoeczemization"). I've had problems with dry skin, rashes, acne, rosacea, halo... -
ARCHIVED Still Struggling
Mother of Jibril replied to honeypond's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is frustrating when grandparents mean well, but they aren't used to the diet My 11-month-old son has a severe intolerance to casein and corn (and I suspect gluten... I won't even risk it). When we were visiting last month for the holidays and the other grandkids had macaroni and cheese she gave him a spoonful... but only the cheese sauce! That... -
ARCHIVED Ethiopian Food
Mother of Jibril replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Teff is gluten-free, but sometimes restaurants mix it with wheat flour. Definitely ask! I love that spongy bread (injera) -
ARCHIVED Supplements
Mother of Jibril replied to Joan Roberts's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I definitely would NOT assume that most supplements are gluten-free! Starch is a common binder, but the question is what kind of starch... wheat, barley, corn, etc... Sometimes companies make a statement about allergens (including gluten) on the label, but if not it's a very good idea to call them before you open the bottle or get rid of the receipt. ... -
ARCHIVED New Cereal!
Mother of Jibril replied to GlutenFreeAl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just saw the Whole O's. I don't know what I was expecting them to be made of (Perky O's are made of sorghum and rice)... but the primary ingredient is corn. -
ARCHIVED Confused About The "healing Crisis"
Mother of Jibril replied to loxleynew's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have several thoughts... 1. It takes time to heal on the gluten-free diet. Depending on your symptoms, the first few weeks (or even months) can be a roller coaster of ups and downs. 2. A lot of people get more sensitive to gluten once they cut it out of their diet. For example, after I was gluten-free for two months I started getting an itchy... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Anemia?
Mother of Jibril replied to savedbygrace92's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Iron deficiency anemia isn't the only thing that can make you feel weak, dizzy, and tired... Other common causes include hypothyroidism and deficiencies in vitamins like D and B-12 (pernicious anemia). Someone with celiac disease can have all of these conditions at the same time Everyone is different when it comes to healing. It depends on your age... -
ARCHIVED My Elisa Testing Results
Mother of Jibril replied to trents's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Dairy and soy tend to cause problems with mucus. Also, it sounds like you might have the DQ7 gene, which is associated with gluten intolerance, cow's milk intolerance, grass/pollen allergies, and fungal sinusitis. In fact, cantaloupe (one of the foods on your list) is a member of the ragweed family! Hopefully the allergy shots combined with eliminating... -
ARCHIVED My Elisa Testing Results
Mother of Jibril replied to trents's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That's interesting. Assuming you're not being cross-contaminated, you must have another food intolerance. Like Jestgar said, start with the foods you eat every day... dairy (casein and/or lactose) is a problem for a lot of people. You don't necessarily need to try every food on your list at once. How are you feeling? Are there certain symptoms you... -
ARCHIVED Lunch Box Ideas
Mother of Jibril replied to mmaldavs's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
In high school I took a lot of whole fruits and vegetables and cut them myself (back in the stone age when you could still have a knife!). I also had a can opener in my locker for cans of pineapple. Now that my daughter is in school I'm sending her with lots of pre-cut veggies and fruit, corn chips, leftovers from dinner, cheese, nuts, etc... Corn thins... -
ARCHIVED My Elisa Testing Results
Mother of Jibril replied to trents's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hmmm... It is strange that they test cheddar cheese, swiss cheese, cottage cheese, and cow's milk separately. Milk has a lot more lactose... milk and cottage cheese still have the whey... but they all have casein. I don't see why you should test high for swiss cheese and not cottage cheese. Have you ever been tested for celiac disease? Do that first... -
ARCHIVED What European Contry Did Coeliacs Originate From?
Mother of Jibril replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The genes for celiac disease exist in all countries throughout the human population. The evolutionary benefit--a really strong immune system against bacteria and viruses--becomes a liability in "modern" diets that have things like genetically modified wheat and high fructose corn syrup. You definitely DON'T need to have European ancestors to have celiac... -
ARCHIVED We're Back - With Nephrotic Syndrome
Mother of Jibril replied to Nikki~Nathan&Danielle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Nikki, I'm sorry that your little guy is still having problems! I have read that some peoples' immune systems interpret casein as gluten and overreact, so dairy should be a really good place to start. My son is intolerant to dairy (even goat's milk) and corn. Other common culprits are soy, eggs, and grains in general. In order to tell if... -
ARCHIVED Millet Or Related Disorder?
Mother of Jibril replied to Eliza13's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you're still having problems, a good basic diet is the SCD. There are lots of threads about it on this forum... look in the "leaky gut and related disorders" section. You can also go to this website: www.pecanbread.com or read "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." Basically, the goal of the SCD is to give your digestive system a break so your body can heal...
