  1. That is sort of how I have gotten around the issue before. I'll start chit chatting with the patient and tell them I have celiac. Most people ask me then what it is so I tell them. I'll tell them it might be worth mentioning to their doctor to get at least blood tested. I also tell them they can get a lot of information from the internet and to read about...
  2. The Slow Fe brand has 45mg elemental iron in them, so not much of a difference in dose. It is slow released and supposed to not cause as much GI upset. Heck I did fine with it when I was taking two a day. I know some forms/brands are harder to tolerate than others and it varries from person. My ferritin was 43( ref range 11-336) in March and my iron ...
  3. Great news. I really sympathize with anyone who suffers from DH. The itching must be maddening. Horray for smooth legs!!
  4. I have been working as a registerd X-ray/CT technologist for the past 17 years. I have mostly worked in hospital settings. I used to do Mammography before I moved to my current location 8 years ago. I now work nights doing x-ray, CT and lower extremity venous ultrasounds. I would like to go back to school for ultrasound, so I'm not limited to just one...
  5. Thanks. For the most part my colleges don't know much about celiac. On the occasion that we have a celiac patient staying at our hospital, the nurses frequently call me and ask me what in the world can they eat(after hours). I have had some of the ED personel refer people to talk to me. One in particular I was emailing through work(she worked at the hospital...
  6. I find that Gas X gel capsules work some.
  7. I refuse to buy from bulk bins. Even if the product is gluten free, my concern is what happens to it after it is put into the bins. Did they use a bin that had something glutenous in it prior and how clean can they really get it? Then there is the CC risk from people using a scoop in the gluten free bin that was from the gluten bin. Not worth the risk...
  8. Ask for the whole celiac panel to be done. Total IgA IgA/IgG tTG IgA EMA IgA/IgG DGP You can always have an EGD with a minimum of 8-11 biopsy samples taken from the small bowel also. Your symptoms could be from celiac or gluten intolerence. You can still have a problem with gluten even if your tests are negative. Once you are all done with...
  9. What bothers me is that I am performing scans, etc on patients in the hospital and when I review their relevant history, red flags go up. I see so many with IBS, various autoimmune conditions, and related symptoms that makes me want to scream at the top of my lungs "THIS PATIENT NEEDS TESTED FOR CELIAC!" Some of these patients have been suffering for years...
  10. I have used unflavored geletin in cookies before. I also used pectin in a bread recipe, but it did call for gums too. I don't recall how much I used though.
  11. How much iron did they have you taking? I wonder if they had you taking to much over a short period. I tried to take a RX of cromagen for the anemia/low ferritin a year before I knew I had celiac. It wrecked my stomach up even more and had to quit taking it. I wasn't able to tolerate oral iron until I was 6 months gluten free. I then started taking two...

ARCHIVED Did She Get Over It?

I couldn't agree more with you. I just hope it doesn't get that bad. She is so set in her plans because she wants the help with her mounting student loans. I told my mother that when the time comes they may not accept her anyway based on some of her health issues now.
  13. I'm sorry you are having a hard time with this. If your husband won't discuss things with you then do what you need to do to get well. If it means that your food is more expensive then so be it. Don't feel guilty about it. Go get those hair extensions if it will make you feel better about yourself. I would recommend that you get your thyroid checked...

ARCHIVED Did She Get Over It?

She is a junior in college and, according to her, plans on going to grad school and enrolling in the Airforce ROTC program and then go active duty. Celiac would hinder that.. That won't stop me from mentioning it to her again.
  15. You might be celiac when you go to the bathroom and can identify the last thing you ate. (yeah, I know it was gross)

ARCHIVED Did She Get Over It?

Update on my neice. She ended up having a colonoscopy and they diagnosed her with colitis. They told her they would do the colonoscopy, and if it didn't show anything then they would test her for celiac. She never has had the blood tests done. I was home in June and I overheard her talking to her dad and mom. She is having issues again and she can't...
  17. I had a good day at home. It was just my husband and my two boys. Hubby smoked a turkey on Wednesday and I roasted half of it yesterday. Made mash potatoes with gravy, homemade cranberry sauce, brazillian cheese bread, green beans and a cherry yum yum for desert. The other half of the turkey went in the freezer and we will be taking it to the inlaws the...
  18. I don't see any reason for you to stick with this doctor just because he is your husbands doctor. My husband and I have different doctors. While I am less than thrilled with his, he still sees him. I'm working with my husband to switch to the office I go to because of the incompentence from his. He is slowly seeing this now. Even then he will be seeing...
  19. I think that celiac can cause some of us to have permanant digestive issues. Weird thing is I never had this prior to diagnosis or for the first year after. It started up all the sudden after I had been gluten free for a little over a year. I never thought at first it was gluten related because the reaction was different. I thought it was my gallbladder...
  20. Tell them to get a second opinion and retested with the whole celiac panel!!! It would be a shame to see this kid's life go down hill unecessarily by still eating gluten.
  21. I took creon for about three months last year because I had steatorrhea for almost 8 months. I was facing having to take steriods but refused and further eliminated things out of my diet. That is when I realized I was reacting to gluten free oat contaminated products. IMHO I believe that I suffer from avenin sensitive enteropathy in addition to celiac...
  22. I've found that my mommy instinct has served me well. I'm glad you are getting you little one feeling better!
  23. Did you use the grain mill for wheat or other gluten containing grains prior to going gluten free? This may well be another source of cross contamination. I would be hesitant to use it. I don't know how well they can be cleaned. The first sign, aside from a belly ache, my almost 7 year old has when he accidently gets gluten is raging temper tantrums...
  24. It is utterly amazing what kids, and even adults, will swallow. My oldest son when he was almost 4 swallowed one of those glass stones that are often found in fish bowls. He ran into the bedroom panicking and clutching his neck. Wow, what a scare! He did end up coughing and swallowed it. I had to take him to the ED to make sure it would pass through...
