I started getting headaches and migraines when I was 12. I am 60 now. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in Spring, 2002. I immediately went gluten-free. I seldom have headaches now and I definitely do not have migraines. From the time I was 12 until I went gluten-free, I never EVER went more than 2-3 days without a debilitating headache. I would vomit...

ARCHIVED Why Biopsy With Positive Ema?
sparkles replied to Boffin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are going to go gluten-free anyway, I wouldn't have the biopsy. There are always risks in any kind of invasive procedure. There are also lots of false negatives with the biopsy. After all, the part of the colon where the villa are is (I think) 20ft long. Some of the villa might not show signs of atrophy... the GI doc is basically looking for a... -
i NEVER liked rice but with the gluten-free diet was forced to give it another try. I started buying risotto rice and I love it. It doesn't get mushy... has a great flavor..... and best of all, I have found some with seasonings that are gluten-free. I use it all the time... for Mexican, Italian, and just stuff like chicken and rice. I often cook it...

ARCHIVED Wednesday Is The Day.. How To Start
sparkles replied to lob6796's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think that your doctor has never been on a really strict diet. For me, it was easier to just give up everything that was gluten. That way I didn't have an excuse for just "one more time". I started out eating just meat.... hamburger.... a baked potato with all the butter I wanted, and lettuce with lemon juice. I know that it sounds pretty rigid now... -
There is something to freezing food for "fast food". I work full time but I try to cook all or part of a day maybe 2 times a month. I make spaghetti sauce, meatloaf, roasts, soups, taco meat, meatballs, etc. Then I freeze them. I also double most recipes so I have leftovers for lunch and I put the rest in the freezer. I have found it is just as easy...

ARCHIVED Gluten Effecting Entire Gi Tract?
sparkles replied to cdfiance's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think that I have had every upper gi digestive problem known to man!!! I have also had colon cancer.... I certainly do think that gluten affects the whole digestive system, nuerological system, etc, etc, etc!!!!!!! I hope that your fiance starts feeling better. It may take her a long to heal. Also I think once you go gluten-free, you are so much... -

ARCHIVED Western Iowa Eastern Nebraska
sparkles replied to missy'smom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
some of the HYVEE stores in central Iowa have support groups for celiac disease that meet in their stores. I don't know about your location but they do have a fairly complete selection of gluten-free foods so they might have a support group associated with a store near your mom. -
I remember very vividly the times that my EX husband would sit me down and lecture me about most every decision that I made. It is not fun and it does not help one's self esteem. I hope that you are either in counseling or thinking about it. I know that you feel that you have his control issues under control (or at least it seems that is how you feel) but...

ARCHIVED Gummie Worms...
sparkles replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are a lot of Hispanics in the neighborhood where I live and therefore lots of food from Mexico in grocery stores, etc. I have found that a lot of the food from Mexico is labeled better than the food processed in US. It seems like they are more willing go beyond just following the guidelines and be more specific about the labeling. If labels were... -
My suggestion is to take your own food.... and just not say anything. If you are asked, just say it is easier to keep to this diet I have to be on... Food Allergies, you know... and then change the subject. It is not fun to have to keep explaining... and explaining.... and explaining. I find that eating before and then sitting there smelling the good...

ARCHIVED Do You Have Dry, Painful, Cracked Heels?
sparkles replied to azmom3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
3M has a great product for heels and feet. I also use it on my elbows, hands, and knees because of extremely dry skin. It did work wonders for me on my cracked heels... and everywhere else I tried it. It isn't greasy like Eucerine. -
I am sorry... I didn't mean to make assumptions about the control issue. Have a good time at the wedding. I am sure that you will look and feel wonderful and that you will enjoy all of your grandbabies.
-
Good for you... It sounds like you have taken control of the situation. Over the years, I have found that the best way to take control over a situation where other people insist upon being "in charge" is to just do it the way you know that it needs to be done and not say anything. Starting an arguement or pointing out what you had to do because the control...

I have gone to about 6 Perkins since diagnosis in 2002 and I have gotten sick at every one of them. So I don't even try them. I must be having bad luck or the ones I have been to don't really care one way or another about my problem with food. I just avoid all Perkins now..... unless I am meeting someone for coffee and all I have is tea!

This is a really difficult situation... not just the wedding but the whole relationship thing with both your husband and your daughter.... I am sorry that you are going through this. I too HAD a controlling husband. We were married for 28 years.... I divorced him FINALLY and got healthy... emotionally and physically. I remarried and am very happy with...

ARCHIVED Dental Work & Gluten In Products
sparkles replied to MaryJones2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Unfortunately, my dentist is very unaware of celiac disease and therefore has not been very helpful in determining whether or not products that he uses have gluten. I know that it is my responsibility to check these things out but have not been very active in that regard. I do know that I get really sick, vomiting and diharea when I take novacaine. I usually... -

Is Greek yogurt made from goat milk? Or what is it??? -
I am gluten free and overweight. To be honest, I think part of my weight problem now is caused from the packaged gluten-free foods. I found out I was a celiac in June of 2002. When I went gluten-free, I ate only hamburgers, salad with oil and vinegar or lemon juice, and a baked potato with lots of real butter. I quickly lost 30#. Soon after I started...

ARCHIVED If I Knew Then, What I Know Now!
sparkles replied to little d's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am confused. If symptoms go away when you are gluten-free, why do you need tests and doctors to tell you that you have a problem with wheat or gluten? Would it be easier to stay on a gluten-free diet if you were given an actual diagnosis of celiac disease or gluten intolerance? In my humble opinion, we are the ones who have control over our bodies. ...
