  1. It's possible, though I know there's lactose in my BC pills and I don't think it's had an effect, but that's a tiny little thing. (I'm also gluten/dairy/soy free). You might be ingesting enough to affect you. I don't know if the vitamin D itself could be causing issues. I know it is possible to take too much (though I have no idea how much too much is) I...
  2. Beans will do it. Even green beans will do it if you eat enough of them (as I found out on my "yay fresh green beans from the market" binge this summer. "why am I so bloaty... oh right. beans are still beans" Sometimes bloating just happens. Again, I find that digestive enzymes help. And I'm doing much better without dairy or soy, thanks.
  3. It's always possible. I don't know when my problems with dairy first developed (was likely in denial for a while), but I didn't go dairy free until 2 years after going gluten-free. You could go dairy free (completely) for a few weeks to see if it helps, then try some again and see if you react. It could be something else though. Also, it's not a bad idea...
  4. Yup, Iron deficiency can definitely be a symptom/sign of malabsorption. Was your 11 year old diagnosed, or is he the one who might have NCGS? Get him to take the iron first thing in the morning (on an empty stomach) with vitamin c or a glass of orange juice. It will absorb better. Not sure about probiotics. If the majority of your kids are Celiac, then...
  5. Yeah, test them both separately. I love New Planet (can't get it in Canadaland, but I lug some home with me whenever I'm in the US), and have never had any trouble with it. For gluten-free beer, it's really good (the raspberry is really nice, but my favourite is the Pale Ale). However, if your body isn't used to alcohol or other things in beer (the yeast...
  6. I think it depends on whether you want to go and spend time with the people (eat before/after, take a snack, have a drink) or not. If not, just say you can't go and that's that. No worries. If she gets offended, that's her problem. When I go out with a friend or two, I'm usually the one picking the place. If I'm invited to a dinner with a bunch of people...
  7. Some toothpastes do have gluten, but its not common. I'm sure there's a thread or two around about which are/aren't. Some people do find other ingredients in toothpaste to be irritating, like sulphites and other nastiness (yet toothpaste is one of the few non-all-natural things I still use). I tried the vinegar (unfiltered apple cider vinegar, with the...
  8. I also agree it was likely the alcohol and not the zucchini. Alcohol of any sort can be hard on the stomach if you have more than a couple drinks. I also hope you were eating more than just zucchini. Were you doing the cooking yourself? Could there have been cross-contamination of anything? It could be that you are indeed still healing (just because the biopsy...
  9. I realize I'm reviving an old topic, but might as well add to it rather than starting a new one. I'm dealing with a nasty nasty sore right now. I almost couldn't get to sleep last night the pain was so bad. I used to get them a lot pre-gluten-free, and now they only show up if I've been glutened or have a cold or something. It's usually a sure sign that...
  10. I'll usually start feeling odd within a few hours, but I can't tell if it was actually a glutening (as opposed to accidental soy/dairy, or just something that didn't agree with me) until the next day, but sometime you think you're in the clear and then it hits you 2 or 3 days later. Everyone will have different reactions over a different time period....
  11. One of my symptoms is also depression and anxiety. If I start getting anxious, or depressed, etc for no other reason, it was probably a reaction. I had a really bad bout a few months ago, worse than a long long time, and it scared the s$#&e out of me (and my boyfriend). Not good at all. As for Food That Tasted Good, they also don't seem to treat me super...
  12. Hi All Currently enduring a bit of 3-day-delayed cc after eating out on Friday (either that or am actually getting a cold). Blerg. I'm achy, chills, and a bit nauseous. No fun. But my current situation is not the point of this post. Despite feeling that I could be sick at any moment, I know I'm likely not going to be. For someone who gets nauseous...
  13. Beer cozy is a good idea! I should knit myself a couple.
  14. Hmm, best way to find out is to have butter in a controlled home environment and see how you do (any excuse to eat a spoonful of butter is not a bad thing). If you're ok, and you've never had problems other than that potato, then you were probably CCd. Which sucks, but better than giving up butter.
  15. I still get the sleepies after lunch sometimes. Since your gut is still healing, all your energy is being diverted to digestion. Digestive enzymes might also be helpful, to break down and absorb things better, since you're still healing. Also, more veggies than carbs is usually better, with some protein. These pancakes sound tasty though.
  16. I'm always afraid of something like this happening. My man is a big beer connoisseur (read: snob), so I do lots of beer smelling (there's this amazing raspberry beer that's sheer torture), but am extremely careful not to touch the stuff (and no post-beer kisses either). I've had some close calls though: distractedly trying to get caps off regular beer bottles...
  17. I'm a one cup a day person. I can't survive without that, but if I have too much i get jittery and my stomach isn't happy with me. It's more the acidity level, which is actually reduced by putting milk in it (if you have problems with dairy, try almond. very tasty). If you're still healing, then your stomach is more sensitive and can't handle too much. Go...
  18. You could definitely have an intolerance to dairy, either casein or lactose or both. I had terrible trouble with my inner ear and sinuses before cutting out dairy, which has helped tremendously. You can't test for intolerances other than just cutting it out and seeing if you feel better. So, drop all dairy for a few weeks and see if your sinuses start clearing...
  19. I seem to be able to have very small amounts of butter without much trouble, but more than a teaspoon and I'm done for. Same with cheese. Milk, yogurt, soft cheese, etc = no way. Problems with dairy can sneak up on you out of the blue. Could be that you're developing an intolerance now. A dairy challenge to see what's ok and what's not might be a good idea...
  20. "No thanks, I can't eat it." I think the "can't" is important. But then again, I'm one of those people that will go on and on if you let me. "I have dietary restrictions" is another good one, not explicit but says that you're not just declining because you don't feel like it. When offered something in a group setting, I often say, "sorry, I can't, but you...
  21. Bro, some people... A few weeks ago I was at a new place that had a nice little menu, mostly gluten-free, though there was soy in stuff. I asked about it, saying I was gluten-free and couldn't eat soy. The server (and possibly owner, I think), did know what I could/couldn't have (and even said they could take out any soy for me), but asked: "Oh, are you...
  22. Yeah, I usually ask if the tortilla (corn) chips are just corn, cause sometimes they're not. Also, if the restaurant makes their own, they might be fried in the same oil as gluten. I've had an "it's not on the gluten-free menu but we're pretty sure it's gluten-free" situation before. One of the only times I've had to send something back to the kitchen...
  23. If the restaurant you've been going to has a gluten-free menu, you should really talk to the manager/owner and suggest they label the chips and other deep-fried items that they are not cooked in a dedicated fryer. If you see an item listed on a gluten-free menu, you assume it's actually gluten-free! You don't want other people making the same mistake. ...
  24. I worked at a pizza/italian restaurant when I started getting real Celiac symptoms (constant bloating despite loosing a ton of weight, feeling like crud after eating anything, etc). I always say (partly joking) that working there triggered my Celiac, but who knows. I definitely ate more pizza/pasta than usual that year. Should have put on at least 10lb, not...
  25. Have you contacted the company directly since you stared having this rash? It sounds like an allergic reaction, probably to some ingredient in the probiotics, if not necessarily the bacteria cultures themselves. Tell them that you've had an allergic reaction and need to know exactly what's in them so you can figure out what you're reacting to and avoid it...
