ARCHIVED My Experience At The Expo
Pegleg84 replied to Adalaide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
They started a gluten-free expo thing here in Toronto, called the Gluten Free Garage. They've had a couple so far. I went last fall, and it was nice to see what's out there, even though I couldn't eat a good half of it due to soy/dairy, and ended up spending much more than I intended, but got some stuff I'd never seen before. I think they're doing it again... -

ARCHIVED Ridiculous Conversations

I seem to remember my parents being on the Atkins diet briefly, back before Mom was diagnosed Celiac. Oooh the crazy things people do for no reason... My boyfriend is a strict vegetarian, and doesn't eat eggs (though eats enough cheese for the both of us), so when we go out we're both interrogating the server. He's worse than I am! But I can't even count... -
I've been in the process of eating one all morning. They're huge! and tasty. but a whole one at once is a little much. It seems to be treating me ok, though I doubt I'll ever buy them for myself (the idea of them being imported from Denver?? and being in a giant tray and etc etc is kind of unappealing to me. Usually if I buy baked goods, it's from a local...

Thanks guys! You're the best. Yeah, it's possible I've slacked off ever so slightly in the past bit and just need to pull myself together a bit. And yeah, if it isn't back to "normal" in a few weeks, going to have to do a full on elimination. Ergh.... I knew it was coming. I'll definitely check out this high-histamine list. Once I do start an elimination...

This is timely because I just tried these muffins for the first time. My boyfriend's mom got them (even though I always insist she not get me stuff when we come to visit) when we went up for early thanksgiving last weekend. I tried some yesterday morning. Not bad at all, but my stomach wasnt up to handling that much that early in the morning. I'll have to...

I'm already a giant piece of rice... I've thought about doing a proper elimination diet, and winter seems like a better time to do it since there won't be as many fresh veggies around to temp me. I've been mostly ok with corn so far, but you never know (please please please let me be ok with corn... Rice pasta just isn't the same! and the chips!) Ok...

Hmm, that's a possibility. I have been eating more potatoes lately (time of the year) but -like most things lately- been trying not to have them too often. (I'm currently trying to rotate rice, corn, potatoes as my main carb during the week). I've also cut back on other nightshades (or not too many in one meal/back to back). And yeah, I certainly do know...

Hi all Just wondering if anyone else feels horribly achy a few days after getting cc'd? Or if they react to anything other than gluten with aches? By "achy" I mean your whole body feeling tired, sore, and slow, muscle weakness, though the ache is more in my bones/joints. Slightly tingly and sometimes painful feel/hands/legs. Headache, brainfog, slight...

ARCHIVED Symptoms Improved But Haven't Gone Away.
Pegleg84 replied to jimhalpert625's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you do have problems with gluten (and it sounds like you could be, if you're feeling better without), then every time you eat it (accidentally or not), you might not feel it right away but it's still messing up your system, making it difficult to digest everything else. Also, if you're still healing your gut might not be able to handle everything you put... -
Welcome to the Forum! This is by far the best resource I know. We're all here for you. All you really need to tell your husband is that you have to be 100% gluten free to reverse the damage already done and stay healthy. That way you can avoid all the possible future complications, and just feel better in general. If you just moved into a new place, what...

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed, Not Optimistic About New Lifestyle
Pegleg84 replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It sounds like you've gone through years of attempted remedies (drugs, diets, etc) that haven't worked, and probably the reason is because gluten was the culprit all along. For silent Celiac, I think it's even more important to be as strictly gluten free as possible, since if you get into something, you might not notice it while it's still doing damage anyway... -

ARCHIVED Ridiculous Conversations
Pegleg84 replied to Auntie-Manda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My favourite one recently was while asking about the menu at a new bar. They were very accommodating to dietary needs, and have good gluten-free beer, so I did just fine, but anyway: Me: I'm gluten free, and can't eat soy or dairy. Server (I think she might have been the owner, actually): oh, are you on a cleanse? Me: uhhh, a permanent one, I guess... -
No, that's definitely a glutening, though the wine would not have helped. (though it is always possible that sulfates could be an issue, but only if you have/end up having issues with wine, dried fruit, etc, at times when you haven't just been glutened) Reaction to gluten vary from person to person, and can take several hours or even a couple days to kick...

ARCHIVED My New Celiac Girl
Pegleg84 replied to tadgermcbadger's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, that is tricky. Real tricky. I hate to hear when someone knows they're Celiac but won't stick to the diet, and you -who doesn't have it but know you need to be gluten-free for your health anyway- are on board. You should be perfect together! But only if she's willing to stop being in denial. Maybe threatening death isn't the way to go. Maybe talk... -

ARCHIVED About 3 Months Into Being Gluten Free And Feel Like I'm Hitting A Wall...
Pegleg84 replied to MattSp1989's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ooh, I've been tempted to get gluten-free english muffins but haven't gotten over the $$ enough to do so. I think it's time. Anyway, I think we've all been in that situation where we have a craving for something, maybe even go to a restaurant we know has gluten-free options hoping to eat the craved food, only to find out that, sorry, it's done on the... -

ARCHIVED Dating Someone With Celiacs?
Pegleg84 replied to ecafhtroneht's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Brush brush brush your teeth. Easy peasy. Also, kisses on the cheek are safe and still count in my book. It's great that you want to do what you can to keep your potential girl/boyfriend from getting sick. They'll be impressed! -

ARCHIVED Reactions To Non-Gluten Food
Pegleg84 replied to JAY-RU's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think the general idea is that a: the symptoms of Celiac can mask other food intolerances, and b: because your gut is still healing, it can't handle all the foods it normally does. I didn't clue in to my dairy intolerance until 2 years after going gluten-free, and shortly thereafter ditched soy because it also made me feel like crud. I also have trouble... -

ARCHIVED 2-3 Days For A Glutening Reaction?!
Pegleg84 replied to CajunChic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, my last glutening (a few weeks ago) hit me 3 days later (just when I thought I was in the clear). Achy and nauseous and headachy and sleepy and awful. And that was just from cross contamination. It took a couple weeks or so to get out of my system. I'm really only back up to snuff now. My last serious glutening took a couple months to fully resolve... -

ARCHIVED Do You Take Your Celiac Disease Seriously?
Pegleg84 replied to GF Lover's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
(Great thread, guys!) My first encounter with Celiac Disease was my aunt, who was diagnosed while battling thyroid cancer that was likely caused by years of undiagnosed Celiac, so yeah, I knew the risks were big from the get-go. Even though I wasn't officially diagnosed, the fact that it's so prevalent on both sides of my family gives me no doubt that... -
yeah, if I was going to point at another food that could cause these problems, it would be soy. Soy makes me super brain-foggy and anxious. Not a good time. But as Irish Heart said, if you didn't have these problems before gluten-free, and you're sure no gluten is getting in anywhere, best to talk to your doctor when you can and make sure nothing more serious...
 -
Well, that wasn't going to work out, then. If your (potential) significant other can't deal with your life-long condition, then screw that. When you find the right guy, he'll be willing to bend-over backwards to keep you from getting sick, which really just means keeping a toothbrush around and not bringing bread into the house. And never feel that telling...
 -
Yep, it really does sound like something (likely gluten) is sneaking in somewhere. It just takes a tiny bit. Give your hub/kids a good lecture on keeping things gluten free (so mommy doesn't get more crazy! that's a good enough threat) I'm going through a bit of a rough patch myself right now, just up and down, emotional out of the blue, nothing serious...

I can't say for sure that I have or not, but I've been pretty careful. If we're out for dinner or a beer or something, its no kisses until teeth are brushed. If he had some several hours before (assuming lips are pretty clean by then), then a little peck seems to be ok. No making out until guaranteed clean, though. So far so good, as far as I can tell. It...

Sorry, Jen, I was typing at the same time. It's also possible that you could be developing another intolerance. Are you having symptoms other than the anxiety and brain fog? As I said, check everywhere possible for hidden gluten, but also think about things like dairy, soy, etc. Anxiety SUCKS, and when you can't pin it to something it's even worse.
 -
For me, anxiety with no reason is always a sign that either I got glutened, or something else is off. It was one of my more serious symptoms before going gluten free. Thankfully, I only have a real "attack" maybe once a year or so. That's a big change from once a month and feeling iffy all the time. Anyway, B12 definitely helps, and Vitamin D (especially...
