  1. Well, I'm destined for either arthritis or tremors, or both. As long as I can still knit! So sounds like jury's out on whether it's a celiac thing, or just a coincidence.
  2. Somehow I don't think introducing a growth hormone might be the best idea... anyone else ever heard of this ever being used?? Celicajohn, do you know why your doctor would have tried something like that. is there any research it would really work? Bottom line: Don't give up! I went through a rough time my 2nd year in too. Sometimes we end up becoming...
  3. I also sometimes get random problems, like being fine after you eat a perfectly safe meal at home, but feeling rotten after the leftovers, etc. I've been trying to "rotate" my foods somewhat, not eat too much of the same thing at once or the next day. I'm not strict about it, but it does seem to help a bit. I also take digestive enzymes with meals which helps...
  4. I was determined to try the thing out yesterday, but my neighbourhood is masa harina-less. I will have to go further afield to find it (which in this cold snap is a bit of an ordeal) So I attempted some kind of substitute with cornmeal and chickpea flour, which actually cooked up ok as pancakes, but was NOT suitable for the press, and was not nearly as satisfying...
  5. Well, in my interim research, Bob's Red Mill makes a masa flour, so yay! I might end up finding something else that's safe. None of my local markets have fresh corn tortillas, and the frozen ones are a hassle, so now that I have this thing, I'm definitely going to be using it.
  6. Hi all My man surprised me this xmas, really surprised me with the lead-weight of a cast-iron tortilla press! Which means now I can make my own corn tortillas! However, wondering if anyone else out there uses one and might have any tips A couple questions: - what's the best corn flour/meal to use? Are there certified gluten-free masa flour out there...
  7. Yeah, i just found it odd that it happens to be Mom and my uncle who both have Celiac who are starting to get the tremor. Of course, they're the older members of their family and it could just be the genetics catching up with them.
  8. Hi all Just curious whether any of you with Celiac also have essential tremor, which is a neurological conditions that make your hands shake. It looks like a symptom of Parkinsons, but isn't an overview: Open Original Shared Link Anyway, my grandmother (on my mom's side) has had it for years, and now my Mom and my uncle are also developing it...
  9. Ooh look, one of my topics was revived! This is a pretty old post, but it does contain some good information, so maybe ok to keep going. Also interesting to look back and remember what I was going through a couple years ago. I was CONVINCED something was wrong with my inner ear. After all the tests came back negative, in 2012 I worked on my diet instead....
  10. If its distilled, it's safe. If its flavoured, check the ingredients. However, some people are just sensitive to alcohol in general. I know a few people who are allergic/intolerant to alcohol, meaning a little bit will make them sick. In your case, if you've been gluten-free for 3 years, it's possible that you are still getting cross-contamination from...
  11. Ditto on Irish. However, are you absolutely sure you didn't get cc'd from anything? Around the holidays things get tricky, so might be good to double-check on that. If symptoms last a long time (longer than a stomach flu would), it's always possible it could be an intolerance to something else. Dairy? Soy? anything else that could be bothering you? In...
  12. Ditto on what Adelaide said (a bit of tough love, but it's true). If you have been caving in to the gluten on a regular basis, you probably should try getting tested because likely damage would still show since you've never had time to completely heal. If you've caving other grains (rice, etc, as you said), then it's just a sign that you really have to leave...
  13. I usually don't even bother touching food on airplanes, though I did have pretty decent meals on British Airways to/from England last year. Even so, always always take enough food to feed you on the flight. Lots of snacks, something that qualifies as a meal that will keep for a few hours, etc... Just make sure it will go through security, and you can also...
  14. Simple answer is that you need more time. One month is not that long, and it usually takes several to heal. It sounds like you're doing everything right though, so there is the possibility that you have another intolerance. Are you still eating dairy? You could try dropping that and see what happens. Maybe others will have better advice? Hang in there...
  15. I won't touch McDonald's food (or most fast food) with a 10-foot pole, for many many reasons, the least of which is that I would not trust them to serve a safely gluten-free meal. Far far too many chances of CC in a place like that. That said, that sounds like grounds for just saying, no I don't want my order and I want a refund. Screwing up your order is...
  16. last I checked, Advil is perfectly safe, just so you don't freak out.
  17. I agree with Bartful that it might be a little early to start looking for other intolerances/issues. You need a few more months of being completely gluten-free. If the other problems clear up, there you do, if they don't then you can start figuring out the culprit. In the meantime, though, processed stuff is probably not the best for you. There's lots of...
  18. Welcome! Vent all you want. That's what we're here for. Bloodtests for Celiac are more likely to be false negative (like mine) than false positive, so I wouldn't dismiss the results, though maybe getting them done again making sure it's the full panel might not be a horrible idea. Biopsy is the "gold standard" because it shows actual damage. However,...
  19. Whenever I slack off on my enzymes, bad things happen. Every meal, or anytime I'm eating out/at someone's house. I don't usually take them with breakfast but probably should... We definitely develop more poo knowledge than the average person. I always check it out to make sure everything's looking ok. Anyway, a friend of mine one took a photo of her...
  20. might be all the good fats. But if everything else looks normal, no problem! I've got the other kind of floaters too.
  21. I've got trouble with casein too, so I avoid all dairy. A tiny bit doesn't do much, and it is the lesser of my woes, but it's insta-headache, some stomach troubles, and messes with my sinuses. Not fun. Some people do eventually reintroduce things their intolerant to, but I think it really depends on the person. I can't have soy either, and don't expect...
  22. I was also thinking possible dairy problems, but it could be a bug. Last week I was under the weather and concluded it must have been CC aftereffects, but one of my coworkers had the exact same thing, sooo... Could also be the unfortunate effects of healing, Our guts tend to be fussy for a while. Too much something could have upset it. In any case...
  23. Aw, your roommate is a sweetie. You don't have to go into gory details, but don't have to have a "ladies don't poop" attitude either. My man picked up some sort of stomach bug on vacation and it was pretty nasty for a few weeks. He didn't want to describe it but I'm like "man, you have no idea the stuff I hear on the celiac forum, so you really can't...
  24. I can't handle much brown rice in general (my gut doesn't like anything that's too good for me), but yeah, CC could be a possibility. Brown basmati might be better if you want something whole grain. Feel better soon!!
  25. As I commented to a smoker friend of mine: well, if you're going to poison yourself, you'd might as well enjoy it. I can't imagine making myself eat gluten for a month for a test, but if I did I'd soon be stuck on my couch eating all the good stuff... though I might have to get someone to bring it to me due to the excruciating pains, and probably loosing...
