My man is always trying to find new treats that I can eat, and will proudly show me the bag. "Can you eat these?" Sometimes it turns out I can't, but he's getting better and always checking to make sure things are safe. Also, on trips to the US he usually hauls back some New Planet or Greens for me. I do love him for other reasons too, I just can't remember...

ARCHIVED Dealing With Getting Glutened?
Pegleg84 replied to upsilamba's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I do eat pasta, prepared things like curry pastes/pasta sauce, peanut butter, gluten-free oats, larabars, etc, but these have already proven themselves safe. If you've been eating it with no problem, then it's probably fine. If it's certified gluten-free with simple ingredients, then it's probably ok. Frozen/packaged foods, baked goods, overly processed foods... -

ARCHIVED Microwave Popcorn - Yea Or Nay?
Pegleg84 replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The big problem with popcorn is that every time I have some, it turns into eating a whole bag/pot of it at once.... Mmm popcorn hangover... -

ARCHIVED Ridiculous Conversations
Pegleg84 replied to Auntie-Manda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oy! I've seen other Celiacs do some pretty stupid things right in front of me. A friend of the family joined us for a meal at the cottage this summer. She was saying how she though soy might be bothering her too. I thought, sure, it might be. Then when she decided a piece of regular blueberry pie was worth it, even though "she'd pay for it later", I thought... -
Definitely not being a brat. I think you could/should just flat-out tell your boss that you aren't able to pick up bagels anymore because it's hazardous to your health to be handling them. Surely someone else can pick them up. That's just ridiculous. Of course, I'd bring it up in a calm and respectful manner, but you shouldn't be doing this simply because...

ARCHIVED Dealing With Getting Glutened?
Pegleg84 replied to upsilamba's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As I said, it's tough but it's worth it. I live in Toronto, and yeah, there's so much good food out there that I should be able to eat. gluten-free awareness is better, etc. However, any risk is probably too much for you right now, so the best idea is to cook at home for as long as you can. After I got horrible sick last christmas, I stared the facts in... -

ARCHIVED I Got Glutened About Two Weeks Ago - Confused?
Pegleg84 replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A couple possible explanations: if you hadn't been glutened in a long time (and your gut had healed) it seems to take longer for symptoms to really kick in. Also, if your immune system is weakened, then you're definitely unacceptable to picking up a bug. Really, everyone is different, and reactions can change over time. I had a similar experience once... -

ARCHIVED Anyone Go Through This?
Pegleg84 replied to shadowicewolf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also get the 3pm sleepies quite often, sometimes requiring a nap as soon as I get home from work, but that tends to be worst post-glutening, or if I'm sick, or whatever. Usually I can power through, and feel better once I've eaten dinner. It does sound like a blood sugar/digestion thing (too much lunch or not enough/right foods, etc) My sleep has definitely... -

ARCHIVED Dealing With Getting Glutened?
Pegleg84 replied to upsilamba's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ditto. If you're sick, you're sick. That is not a lame excuse. I end up taking a day off from glutenings on occasion, and my reactions really aren't that horrible (not compared to what you're describing), so don't feel bad. If your boss understands the situation, then that should be enough. Unfortunately, it seems that the severity of your reactions are... -

ARCHIVED Did Anyone See Friday's Ellen Show?
Pegleg84 replied to WinterSong's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ha! My cousin jokingly sent me a link to the site (and I made a joke back that my BF should find a dating site for vegetarians). It's one of those things that does seem ridiculous until you realise that this disease is as nasty as it is, and something as simple as a gluteny kiss can trigger a reaction. Of course, dating is tough. When looking for a significant... -

ARCHIVED Microwave Popcorn - Yea Or Nay?
Pegleg84 replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Popcorn Indiana is ridiculously addictive. I got my stovetop popper just to avoid buying it so much! So that's another alternative to microwave bags. -

ARCHIVED Boyfriend's Sister Is A Pastry Chef - Misinformed About Celiac?
Pegleg84 replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Waaahhhh! Yeah, I wouldn't go near her cooking. Of course, that doesn't mean there needs to be a bunch of drama about it, but your man is a champ for standing up for you. Friends and family are always going to have a hard time getting their head around just how careful we have to be (I was talking about this to a friend of mine the other day, whose a bit... -

ARCHIVED Microwave Popcorn - Yea Or Nay?
Pegleg84 replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
too much popcorn can be hard on your system no matter what, and if you're just starting the gluten-free diet, it's going to be extra fussy for a while. Best to take it easy with things like popcorn (much easier said than done, I know) That said, while most microwave popcorn is gluten-free, it's full of other not good stuff. If you like to eat popcorn... -
I think the horrible reactions to eating gluten again would be proof enough, but if the test is in the mail, hopefully it comes out positive. Either way, you can probably safely declare yourself "might as well be Celiac," especially if there's a family history. I never had a positive blood test, and didn't tough it out long enough to do a biopsy, but Celiac...

ARCHIVED Anemic, Chronic Pain, Tmj, Celiac Disease, And Severe Hayfever. Difficult Times...
Pegleg84 replied to KnightRobby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Iron is absorbed best with vitamin c. You just shouldn't take iron and calcium supplements at the same time, or take your iron with a glass of milk or anything like that. Depending on how severe the anemia is, injections might be worth a shot (no pun intended). The other route is to take the most easily absorbed (ferrous glutamate is probably best, and is... -

ARCHIVED Muscle Weakness And Pain
Pegleg84 replied to answerseeker's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No idea about the red dots either, but hopefully the dermatologist will help you out. Lori, I get the aches and muscle weakness after a glutening, but thankfully not as bad as your situation. More protein helps. Digestive enzymes help absorb it. Have you ruled out other intolerances as well? I'm also not sure what "normal" Iron levels should be, but... -

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Get This?
Pegleg84 replied to shadowicewolf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
On occasion I'll wake up with stomach pains, and sometimes feeling a bit nauseous... not because I ate (or drank) too much the night before, but because I didn't eat enough! I wake up starving! Sometimes it will wake me up in the night insisting that I must be fed and have to do some bleary-eyed middle of the night munching just to settle things down and... -
I live in Toronto, but I have family back home (I'm from Sussex). Moncton is probably a good place to be for gluten free. I've never been to it, but there is a gluten-free bakery/restaurant there somewhere (I think it's still there?). I bet if you look at the Canadian Celiac Association it will have info on regional chapters. When I was home this summer...

ARCHIVED Just Started Gluten Free.
Pegleg84 replied to student314's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If they're stainless steel or glass, they should be ok as long as you wash them really well. Definitely no gluteny bits left behind. If they're non-stick (teflon, anything that is scratched or could be), I wouldn't touch them. Get a new pan for yourself and label it at the gluten-free pan. For baking and things like that (if you're able to), you can line... -

ARCHIVED Bummed Out :(- Just Venting
Pegleg84 replied to tryme's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some people choose to only use gluten-free skin/hair care products (I do), but it's mostly a "better safe than sorry" measure. It can't be absorbed by the skin, but if it gets in your mouth, that could cause problems. I was (obliviously, cause I'm an idiot and didn't read the label properly) using a shampoo with wheat protein in it for over a year. Definitely... -

ARCHIVED Long Island Medium Episode Tonight: She And Her Daughter's Pediatrician Are Ignorant!
Pegleg84 replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
*face plant* If someone thinks they might have an issue with gluten, the right thing to do first is to ask your doctor about it and get tested. !!!! Oh man... As a TV related side note, this reminds me of a episode of House where one of the patients ended up having Celiac. I think I guessed it from the symptoms 10 minutes in. And they took it seriously... -
Welcome to the Forum Patt! Just noticed you're in NB. I'm from there (in Toronto now, but eaten my share of McCains over the years). Get the plain ones. Check the labels. Nothing crispy. They should be ok. I'm not sure where in the province you are, but I do know that there's been a pretty good spread of gluten-free awareness in the province, and your local...

ARCHIVED One Study Said 60% Of Celiacs Are Not Healing Just With Diet.
Pegleg84 replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The article also says that as long as you wash the gluteny stuff off the cutting board, you shouldn't get glutened... and I think we all know that unless it's one of those glass ones, then a shared cutting board (for example) could be causing low-level cc no matter how well you wash it So their idea isn't that even if you take every precaution possible ... -

ARCHIVED Is Coeliac Triggered By Something?
Pegleg84 replied to KCG91's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also think it can develop gradually in some people. I can't pinpoint when mine started, because looking back I had many non-digestive symptoms for years. The first sign was in my late teens when I had iron anemia for a bit, then my horrible mood-swings/anxiety through university, then the balance issues for a couple years. Other little things like brittle... -

ARCHIVED I Just Have To Let Out Some Frustration. Gluten Sucks.
Pegleg84 replied to BelleVie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also tend to get pretty emotional/anxious after getting glutened (or soyed, which is just as bad if not worse), and anxiety attacks were one of my main symptoms before going gluten free... Meltdowns at work are absolutely not fun. Meltdowns at home are no better, but at least you can cry and scream in your own space. I don't know how long you've been on...
