  1. I think one of the really challenging things to find, as a super-sensitive, is supplements that don't make you sick. Probiotics, vitamins and minerals, digestive enzymes - all the things that can be really helpful, but we have to find safe sources. So, what brands of supplements/probiotics/other 'gut/body helpers' do you take that don't make you react...
  2. Do you have any trouble with antibiotics, citric acid, or bleach? Meat is all washed with an anti-bacterial. Different types of meat get different washes. A diluted bleach wash is common, and so is citric acid (for beef and fish). I'm sure there are others - might be worth checking out, because if you react to the cleansers, you can sometimes find local...
  3. Okay, let's see. - Some information about cooking and purchasing options that can accommodate gluten-free, dairy-free, AND soy-free products, that are affordable alternatives. There's a grocery shopping guide put out by cecelia's marketplace - online - that lists tons of regular products that are gluten-free. She, too, is soy, dairy, and gluten...
  4. Food diary would definitely be of some use. And the sores themselves - where they are may be of some help, too A sore throat is actually not uncommon for mild allergies - some foods we only react to when they hit our mucus membranes, like the lips, tongue, mouth - and they tend to inflame our insides some, too, at that point. If that's the case, usually...
  5. You might want to call the doctor up and talk to them about these reactions, or at least find out a way they can help you monitor them closely, if a couple days is causing this much pain. Most doctors seem to assume any problems on a gluten challenge are going to be gut related, and not too severe. For many of us, after going gluten free, our reactions...
  6. Kudos on double checking on this! One of those tests is very celiac specific - it's really good you caught it early. One thing to know, now, although the center will likely tell you the same: you probably want to test everyone now. You and your spouse, and any other children. If one person is a celiac in the family, everyone 1 degree separate (parents...
  7. GlutenFreeManna, So sorry that ones getting you. So scary! Do you know which protein in milk you react to? And did your doctor mention latex to you? I have a friend whose son has a severe dairy allergy. They thought he started reacting to latex, too, and then found out that many latex products have casein added. Since you're reactions have worsened,...
  8. Ha - we need to have a canary logo, LOL. Steph here is further along then me in figuring it all, and I was just saying a while back that she's My canary!
  9. Both my daughter and I get bloating when we get gluten, although not severe bloating. And as was said - being overweight is not uncommon in celiacs now, but when most current doctors went to school, it was thought that being overweight was impossible as a celiac. The year before I was diagnosed, I gained 40 pounds in 4-6 months. There are 4 celiacs...
  10. Some of the things I do to take my mind off of this are: learning a new language - check out a free site, like livemocha.com. Even has people to interact with, tons of different languages, and at least you can avoid the food for a while. And hey, in the back of your mind, you can remember that if you learn this language, you can go to the country where...
  11. At this point, doctors don't know much of anything about gluten intolerance. It's only recently been studied enough to say that it likely exists, period. However, when they were looking at whether it exists, I believe that one of the 'proofs' was that the gluten caused problems, but no rise in antibody levels or blunting of villi (I wouldn't swear to that...
  12. Oh hon, I feel for you! Awful to feel this bad about something that we have to have in order to live! So, phew, okay: 1. Might want to look at fructose malabsorption. It causes a lot of gas for some, involves grains, legumes, fruits, AND veggies. And dairy, too, if I recall right. If you look up frucmal diet on a search engine, some safe foods for that...
  13. I think the longest I've gone without reacting has been 2 months. I've only been gluten-free for 2 years now, and super-gluten free for about 1 of those years. At first (and still a little), the reactions were because the list of safe foods I can have is not nutritionally complete. At my Dietician's advice, I would look into supplements (all failed) and...
  14. Oh heck yeah, it most definitely can. I think it can be a challenge to avoid, as a super sensitive especially, because of the differences in gluten concentration in our foods. Products that are much lower than their maximum allowed ppm, those that are close to the maximum ppm, and a number of the 'naturally' gluten-free foods that end up being over the 2...
  15. Oh man, sorry to hear you got zapped! :-( Hope it passes quickly and you're back on your feet again.
  16. My kids have tried a chip they liked, called Laurell Hill, nacho flavor, that they said reminded them a lot of the Doritos chip that they used to have. This kind: Open Original Shared Link These chips are GFCO certified, so they should be less of a cc risk than Doritos. :-)
  17. Oh, wow, I just reread my post re: the law...I could not have been more confusing in my language if I tried to do it on purpose. Ouch - sorry 'bout that! So, to answer the question: yes, I have actually read the 20 ppm regulation. When I was talking about not being completely familiar with 'the law' I should have said: I am not completely familiar...
  18. Actually, I live pretty much exactly like that. It's not due to lack of trust in the gov't, it's due to the fact that even when I was so desperate I was eating only organic produce, and washing it well, I was sick as a dog. I can eat the exact same produce, grown in my own yard or grown by farmers without gluten derived products used in their fields, and...
  19. Did they test you for numerous vitamin deficiencies? Or did they suggest vitamins to take without testing you for as many as they could? I know low vitamin D levels are also common to celiacs and can have a huge affect on the body, so if you are low in this, that could be the issue. Are you taking any multi-vitamins? If you want a natural vitamin D, codliver...
  20. One thing: have they ever tested you for Crohn's disease? I believe that prednisone is one of the drugs that can help control it, in some cases, and it sometimes goes hand in hand with celiac disease. And it's also very sensitive to diet, although different people react to different food 'triggers' for it. That pretty much described me for a long...
  21. There was a discussion about Sunset Gourmet in June, who made the same claim: that the gluten could be fermented out of soy sauce. soy sauce

    ARCHIVED We're Not Alone

This was mentioned in another forum, and I thought it might be of interest to some here: an article by another super sensitive gal, and what it's been like for her. Open Original Shared Link It's from a Canadian perspective, but definitely interesting. I was intrigued by her comments on having prescription tryptophan after she's been glutened, and...
  23. Sadly, it wouldn't do much good. Well...I don't think it would. From what I understand, it's a physical problem with the muscles around the vocal cords, and things make them spasm that shouldn't affect them at all. While my bugbear seems to be my allergens, it can really be anything. Most of us with this get worse if we talk too much, or sing too much....
  24. It's not always the case, but a fair number of people here who continue to have symptoms seem to find out that something they are ingesting ends up being the problem. Allergies, intolerances, salicylates, sulfites, or even low level gluten cc. I was diagnosed in my late thirties and things that didn't resolve immediately were joint pain, frequent injuries...
  25. So sorry you're having trouble with your hubby. That's the worst. " your blood test was negative. You just get bloated from starches like me" Okay, OMG, ha. I get this from my husband about onions and bell peppers. Getting bloated from starches is, actually, completely NOT normal. If he gets bloated from starches, he's got a problem with starches...
