  1. If it's celiac disease? That's a wonderful, wonderful thing (seriously, no sarcasm meant at all) because it means that in all likelihood, all this pain and crud that you're feeling with GO AWAY because doctors know how to stop your body attacking itself and you start to heal. You will not need to take medication, or have therapy, with the average celiac disease...
  2. I think that says it all right there. If you were feeling so bad that this is how you view it? And you're not anymore, most of the time, since you've stopped the gluten? Then gluten is definitely part of the problem. Whether it's ALL of the problem seems to be the big issue, yeah? Might be gluten intolerance or celiac disease, might be an issue that...
  3. At this point, I've stopped eating when those around me are, if they are eating gluten. I'll usually eat food on my own before a meal, use the meal time to socialize if I feel like I can do it safely, and then make myself food afterward, as well. But crumbs, and flecks of food, and hands that are touching food and then nudging my plate out of the way or moving...
  4. Jeeesh, that's so awful, for vitamins to cause this much trouble! I haven't been able to find any multi-vitamins or calcium supplements that don't make me sick, either, although some I had an allergic reaction to early on, so I never got to try it when I was having my super-sensitive reactions. I have one iodine source, but I just don't know if I trust it...
  5. Did you test positive to these on an allergy test, or did they test positive during a food trial? Are you allergic to any antibiotics, or to corn, or have any issues with bleach? Just wondering if it's possible you could be reacting to some of the anti-bacterial agents used on the various meats (often diluted bleach and/or corn cc'd citric acid), or antibiotic...
  6. Just wondering if you've checked out any corn allergy websites? If not, I'd highly recommend them. When we had to eliminate corn, I don't think I would have found it all without the aid of these sites, especially some of the corn-used-in-production issues, although some of this likely depends on how careful you have to be. Some paper plates put corn starch...
  7. We were able to get a doctor's note that we had a medically restricted diet and might need to take our food with us. Disneyland will take that without trouble. Might be worth checking with Legoland to see if that might be possible, if you wish to do that. Foods that work easy for us when we're out have been baked potatoes in the microwave, rice with a...
  8. I'd add something to that last one: Don't let it stop you from going out if your symptoms are mild enough or short lived. For those with milder or shorter lasting symptoms, I think this is fine advice. A mistake affects a few hours, or a couple days, and may result in a little discomfort and unpleasantness. There can be other issues, but generally, the...
  9. Do you have any problems with corn? If so, something else to consider is that if it's white rice or enriched rice, it will usually have corn contamination. Many white rices use cornstarch in the process of getting it polished and white. Most vitamin enrichment uses corn-based ingredients to deliver the vitamin, as well. Something that might be helpful...

    ARCHIVED Family

So how does your family react to your super-sensitivity? Supportive? Doubtful? Aggressive on your behalf or against you? What's been your experience? And how do you deal with problems that crop up with this? How do you deal with the limitations placed on you vs. what your family can do and experience?
  11. Oh man, that sort of thing is SO weird when it happens! I'll get some weird nerve pain in the joints, but it'll be just one joint in my pinky, or one area of my toe, etc... What the heck is up with that? So weird, isn't it? I wonder how many of us end up feeling this way? I used to love to tell jokes and silly, snarky comments, and it all kind of...
  12. It seems to be a cc risk. A great site to check for gluten free meds is: Open Original Shared Link It says that Bystolic 'may contain wheat.' Sadly, meds and foods can change their ingredients/formulas very rapidly, so sometimes lists aren't up to date. Always good to double check with the product, like you did, and usually we can assume its information...
  13. Has anyone known someone who is fine after reintroducing gluten? Are we being over sensitive here?
  14. Bad news is that for an allergic reaction, you can be totally fine one day and start reacting allergically the next, so even if all the foods have been fine, doesn't mean they are fine now. :-( Usually the easiest way to try and figure it out is to find these ingredients alone and try them out. A couple facts that might help eliminate or narrow down...
  15. There's an issue with this that I read rumors about on a blog that does seem to be a potential problem for a few McDonald's. Dedicated fryers, yes, but many McDonald's will filter and reuse their oil for a couple days before using completely new oil again. The rumor was that some McDonald's don't have dedicated storage containers for this reused oil...
  16. Either it will be listed on the package, or you have to contact the company and ask if they test their gluten-free food, and if they do, what their maximum allowed gluten is for their product during testing. ppm or parts per million is what you're looking for, obviously. If they say 'our product doesn't have a maximum allowed gluten, it's gluten free...
  17. I've got the medicalert one as well. One thing I've learned, though, is to make sure that if you have someone with you at the hospital, they will advocate for you, big time. Some hospitals are great and pay attention to everything, but far too many don't treat celiac disease or certain allergies as an important issue at all. My food allergies...
  18. I just tried that this year! Although I'm such a crappy farmer...I think out of y entire crop, I got maybe a bowlful of beans, and that was it, LOL.
  19. Wow - I'm learning so much stuff just reading all the responses! So excited to see so much new information - didn't even think of having both issues at once, although of course that's entirely possible, so I don't know why I didn't! Makes me want to get a closer look at my daughter's vitamin levels to see what the results were. Her docs were supposed...
  20. sore throat, sometimes a bit swollen. exhaustion and flu-like feeling. diarrhea. sometimes a little joint pain the next couple days.

    ARCHIVED Neurontin

Does your doc believe this is from gluten ataxia, or is he looking at something completely different? If gluten ataxia is suspected, something he might find of interest is your gluten-free food supply. A safe gluten threshold has not yet been studied for gluten ataxia, so we don't yet know what it is. The maximum allowed gluten in gluten-free foods is aimed...
  22. I think sometimes one of the problems can be trying to visualize what can cause a problem. One of the most important things to get our mother-in-law to realize was that this wasn't your typical 'intolerance.' A lot of people view celiac disease kind of like the gluten version of lactose intolerance, where a little bit is okay. A good reminder is that this...
  23. Glutino products, or just the bread? A lot of the products are pretty tasty, or so my kids tell me. The bread was so-so, I believe. I always hear better things about Udi's.
  24. As it's on the outside of the paper, I wonder if that would fall in the category of packaging? That doesn't need to be reported, as I understand it. Like the cornstarch added sometimes to the inside of plastic for cheeses isn't mentioned on the label. But with wheat...I don't know if packaging is covered by the allergen law, do you know?
  25. Campbell's does not consider this soup to be gluten free. No gluten ingredients, possibly, but not gluten free. Here's a link where you can find a list of the products "in which every ingredient in each product was verified as being gluten free. As a further safeguard, [they] analyze each and every gluten free product to ensure compliance with our strict...
