ARCHIVED Serious Behavioral Issues
T.H. replied to millersinkenya's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh, goodness, I SO feel for you! That sounds SO much like our son. I'm just sitting here thinking of the holes in my son's bedroom door from when he'd be having a screaming fit and attacking the door - for hours, just like you said! When he was smaller, he'd have one of his screaming rage-tantrums until he was exhausted, fall asleep, and on the worst days... -
ARCHIVED Labeled gluten-free But Really Not
T.H. replied to big red's topic in Super Sensitive People
I just wanted to point out that Padma didn't say that a product didn't have to list wheat on the label, just that the wheat didn't have to be listed as an ingredient. I'd assume a product with wheat used in production would need a 'contains wheat' statement on the label near the ingredient list. -
ARCHIVED Is Prescription Ibuprofin gluten-free
T.H. replied to allergyprone's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can also check out Open Original Shared Link A pharmacy has set up this site and has listed some of the products (by manufacturer) that say they are gluten free. If a medication is NOT listed, that doesn't mean it isn't gluten free, however. Just means in that case, it's the pharmacy calling the manufacturer route. :-) EDIT: oops! Not a pharmacy... -
ARCHIVED Labeled gluten-free But Really Not
T.H. replied to big red's topic in Super Sensitive People
Oh so sorry you got sick on that! I'm assuming you live in the USA, yes? One of the major issues here is that there is not yet regulation of gluten-free foods, so which ingredients can be used, and how often a product must be tested, if at all, are not standardized. Another issue is that one of the tests to determine the concentration level of gluten... -
ARCHIVED The Most Annoying Thing About Celiac Is...
T.H. replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I ate boring food while everyone around me was able to enjoy a better meal, and I STILL got sick. My child has to fight tooth and nail to keep her food safe, because the in-laws can't seem to understand cc and simply brush the gluten crumbs away from her food, insisting it'll be 'fine.' (...and they wonder why I won't let them babysit anymore ) ... -
Looking at corn-freefoods.blogspot.com, they list Bluebonnet as a company that has many corn free vitamins. However, according to the site, "any of their products containing fructose, Vitamin C, powdered Vitamin D3, or vegetarian glucosamine will not be safe for a corn allergy. These ingredients are confirmed sourced from corn." ( Open Original Shared...

ARCHIVED What Did You Think Was Gluten Cc When It Actully Wasn't
T.H. replied to T.H.'s topic in Super Sensitive People
IrishHeart, You don't have any issues with corn, do you? One thing that got me a couple times at the dentist was, we think, the added cornstarch to the inside of their latex gloves. I don't have any other issues with latex, but when we went to powder free, latex free gloves, I didn't have the same issues anymore. Another odd dentist question - do... -
Corn is in a lot of vitamins as a...I think it's called a carrier? A substance that surrounds the vitamin and protects it from the stomach acid, but breaks down fast enough that the vitamin is available when it reaches the intestines. Corn seems to be one of the best cheap substances for this so it's used for this all the time, argh. It's even usually...

ARCHIVED Df gluten-free And Still Sick
T.H. replied to DF GF's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
What are the ingredients in the pizza? Do you use very much xanthan gum, guar gum, that sort of thing? Xanthan gum especially is known for causing gut issues in some people, and the gums in general seem to be an issue. I believe this is a reaction that can develop over time, so it could be a new thing. Another curious cause of gut issues can be... -
ARCHIVED What Did You Think Was Gluten Cc When It Actully Wasn't
T.H. posted a topic in Super Sensitive People
As it's pretty obvious from our rather spirited debating here, there are often a lot of opinions on what can be causing super-sensitivity or on what might be going on instead of super-sensitivity. So I thought, why don't we address that head on, yeah? Share our mistakes and our other problems with each other, and share how we figured out what the heck they... -
ARCHIVED Help With Food Labels
T.H. replied to sarahw's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As was said, the 'processed in a facility with wheat' is a voluntary statement, not mandatory. The majority of companies have facilities that process foods with gluten somewhere in the facility, or possibly on the same line. You're more likely to find a facility that doesn't have intentionally added gluten in the facility with companies that specialize... -
ARCHIVED Squash - Butternut, Pumpkin, Etc., -- I Have Gluten-Like Reaction - Anyone Else?
T.H. replied to PeachBlossoms's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Don't know if this helps, but considering that your reaction is emotional, it might. I know that one way we can get an emotional reaction from food is related to tryptophan. It's used to create melatonin (regulates sleep) and seratonin (one thing it does is regulate emotions, as I understand it). If we are low in tryptophan, that leads to low seratonin... -
Re: the sunmaid raisin - thanks for the information! I was wondering if they had a large enough volume to focus on raisins alone. Nice to know that they do. :-) Re: the progresso - I'm guessing they've got the gluten-free label, then. Argh, so frustrating when major brands like that are left out of my gluten-free guide. It'd be nice to be able to get...

I"m glad it helped! Heh, I don't know about one hell of a woman, but my tween daughter told me her friends voted me the coolest mom they all knew, LOL. ....which probably means I'm so immature I can bond with tweens, ha!
-
I'd check the foods first, the cream of tartar last. Sunmaid does focus on dried fruit, so it might be okay, but dried fruit very frequently is processed in facilities that process wheat - you'd have to contact them to see if it's a wheat free facility, though, as they don't have to state that. The Dei Fratelli tomato soup contains wheat, so it might...

It's possible to have a fairly quick reaction, yeah. However, if this is a new reaction for you, I would write down what the ingredients you were eating and pay attention for the future, just in case it's a new allergy. A couple of my allergies (which I didn't know about until after going gluten-free) make me react similar to what you describe. These also...

From the people I'm meeting, it seems that for some, the symptoms are the same for other food issues AND for the gluten reaction. Often, these seem to be broader symptoms, like the gastro trouble that can hit for both gluten and lactose intolerance. If the symptoms are very consistent, however, especially in a precise pattern, that seems to be gluten specific...

ARCHIVED Ow- Cool Ranch Doritos Are My Nemesis
T.H. replied to saintmaybe's topic in Super Sensitive People
so sorry you got zapped! My kids tell me that the nacho cheese flavor of Laurell Hill tortilla chips reminded them of Doritos a lot, too. They're GFCO certified, so that should be <10ppm. -
Appreciate the thought. :-) Due to my location, Lyme Disease rather unlikely, but as we all know, though, doesn't mean it's impossible. I'm curious if they tested for it in the last round of tests or not, when the docs were kind of grasping at straws.

ha, My hubby's a science geek too, and sometimes I'm sure I get that glazed stare when he starts getting too in depth for me, LOL. The study I cited earlier did find evidence of full proteins making it intact into the roots, but it mentioned that the study was being performed in the first place because there was a lot of disagreement in the botany community...

So basically, the hypersensitivity to gluten was present, but the body was influenced by other conditions that were also present, so once those other issues were resolved, the body's sensitivity levels dropped back to normal? For some, anyway. Is that right? If I'm understanding that right, that is very, very interesting, considering I do have one other...
-
Oh congratulations, that's wonderful! I hope the rest of it resolves before too long, too. I never really understood what a huge thing it was to be able to say 'it's getting better.' I mean, my own issues? They weren't that bad before going gluten-free. Compared to so many here, my own issues are puny, small potatoes kind of stuff. No major surgeries...

As I understand it, the stores themselves are supposed to have an easy to read sign for any produce that has a wax coating. It can be right next to the produce itself, or a generic sign that warns which fruits or veggies may have a wax coating. However, the rule is often not followed. A cleveland news station checked with 8 different grocery stores...

I'm gonna have more of a response to some other stuff later when I've got some more time, but just wanted to respond to this really quick. :-) Some of the most detailed, accessible sources I've seen for this sort of thing are actually from the various groups/councils that determine if a food is kosher. These folks have to know precise details about the ingredients...
