  1. Yeah, I have before. :-( Toothpaste sounds like a good thing to check. Another you might want to check is if he uses chapstick or any other lip balm - that frequently has gluten and he might not be thinking about it. There was a study on peanuts and kissing that had some interesting results. What they boiled down to is that how much protein remains...
  2. It's a possibility, yes. You're correct in that some people would get damage from this, and not everyone will show symptoms. It's a very frustrating situation, because some people don't seem to be affected by this - they do this, they feel fine, and their follow up tests are fine as well, as well. There's just no way to know which category you are in until...
  3. How long ago did you talk to him? Could the company have been sold in the interim? I keep hearing that a lot of good organic companies are being bought up by the bigger conglomerates, like Burt's Bees was. Maybe this one has been sold as well? :-(
  4. I know just what you mean. The limited diet can really grind you down, yeah? At times, it's to the point where I just feel like I can't stand it anymore, where I just want to 'loosen up a little' and I start thinking maybe all those times I reacted were just additive reactions or flukes or before I knew how to call up companies properly and it won't be so...
  5. I'm so sorry to hear about the Lupus, Marilyn. Crud. As if Celiac wasn't enough. I'm really glad that you're feeling better, though. And that at least you know what's going on so you can figure out a battle plan for coping with it, yes? Better to be filled with piss and vinegar for this type of battle than sugar and spice! ;-) Have you found a good...
  6. Just thought it might be nice for folks here to share how they are doing in Super-sensitivity land! How is your diet working for you these days? Do you feel like you have it figured out, don't get glutened anymore, or are you still struggling? Any other issues that you've discovered since you started searching for answers, or is gluten the main problem...
  7. I'll be totally honest, a teeny, selfish part of me is hoping it's your ice cream. I just bought a package of these cones today for my son to try, so I really don't want it to be them! I think I'll be calling them up to double check on processing. I don't know anything about the ice cream company's facility. But there's a question that might be good...
  8. I've come to think that we each have our own, individual optimal diets. Whatever strengths and weaknesses our genetics gifted us with, whatever injuries we've sustained in life, whatever we're exposed to in our environments - it's all going to have an effect on what diet does best with us, IMO. The gluten free diet is a clear one for all us Celiacs,...
  9. I got allergy testing, yes. That found some things I can't eat (like dairy, soy, and eggs, for example). I also eliminated foods from my diet and kept a food journal for a while and found more foods/problems as well. Oh, and I think you should have normal bowels now, yes.

    ARCHIVED Cereal

Can you have legumes? Roasted chickpeas from scratch were great for us - They are crunchy when done right, can be flavored with lots of different flavors, and last for around 5-7 days. I've eaten them past 7 days, but they tasted stale at that point. I also make homemade falafel from chickpeas, which was kind of bready-ish and filling, and lasts at...
  11. I went grain free because eating anything containing grains was making me very sick, for various reasons. I had to avoid other foods, too, but I have tried to reintroduce grains a few times, very carefully sourced, and it still makes me sick again. I'm growing some in my garden to see if small amounts of homegrown grains might do all right. If I don...
  12. Have you been able to get a full copy of the test results, by any chance? It might be worth it to make sure that you are getting all the information on there. It might also be useful to double check that the doc did enough biopsies. There should be multiple biopsies of the intestines specifically, 4 at the very least. Damage can be patchy, especially...
  13. Just from reading postings on this forum over the last few years, I'd say dairy seems to be the most common problem for celiacs here. Soy, corn, and nightshades are also mentioned frequently. And I am meeting more people online and in my local celiac group who seem to have trouble with all grains, as well. That said, there's one problem with elimination...
  14. I've been grain free for about 2 1/2 years now. No grains, no grain derivatives (even corn derivatives like cornstarch, citric acid, xanthan gum, that sort of thing). I've tried to find ones I can eat, but so far, they all make me sick, so they're out of here. Paleo, primal, and raw foods diet blogs have been a good source of grain-free recipes, along...
  15. If you're having a hard time finding processed potato starch that works for you, it's actually really easy to make it yourself, if you're interested. Open Original Shared Link
  16. Welcome to the group! Hope you can find some help and answers here. :-) And yeah, the recipe section has tons of good ideas!
  17. For lactose, what will make you react kind of depends on where you are, actually, for yogurt, cheese and the like, really. If you are in the USA, reacting to yogurt and cheeses is actually not a great measure of lactose intolerance. Here, the more common methods of making cheese and yogurt is to add thickeners, such as pectin, gums, or milk powder. This...

    ARCHIVED Water Filter

Based on an acquaintance of mine, whose little one reacted to coconut and was getting sick from their charcoal filters, it seems that most water filters use coconut as their main source for the charcoal. It's one of the better ones for filtering the water, I understand. I don't know what else is involved in the processing of it, though. Sorry.
  19. Both my daughter and I did, yes, before we were diagnosed. It's happened a few times getting gluten contamination, too, for both of us, but I've noticed that this happened less and less as time went on, and somewhere around 2 years gluten free, I haven't had a fever again when glutened. I've spoken to a only few folks here at celiac.com who reported...
  20. My father was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and later found to have celiac disease. When I was diagnosed as a celiac, my thyroid numbers had more than tripled in the three years previous, and the docs were looking at diagnosing me with hypothyroidism, too. After the diagnosis and after becoming very strict on my gluten-free diet, within 6 months my...
  21. There was an article here at celiac.com a while back discussing the problem with blood tests, and it would seem to apply to your situation. "... Endomysial antibody positivity correlates with more severe villous atrophy and not mode of presentation of celiac disease. Serologic tests, in clinical practice, lack the sensitivity reported in the literature...

    ARCHIVED Family

Myself, the kids, and hubby are all gluten free right now. Me and child 1 are celiac, child two has turned out to be gluten intolerant, and hubby is just kind. :-) When we first tried a mixed household - yeah, kids plus gluten is a real nightmare. I ended up feeling like the gluten Nazi, because otherwise, the kids would forget and touch gluten and...
  23. I would double check again exactly what your child shouldn't eat and why, and get a good Dietician to help figure it out. Is it something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucrose_intolerance ? You'll want to make sure that a celiac knowledgeable doctor diagnoses something like that, because from what it sounds like something like celiac disease...
  24. My 13 year old daughter was diagnosed a little over 2 years ago, and we did not have her scoped. My father had been celiac for 8 years and I had just been diagnosed, too, so I felt comfortable having her diagnosed via the bloodtest, and so did her doctor. My brother was diagnosed a couple months later, and my son's test came back negative. In the end,...
  25. Sorry I can't help with the rice brand. :-( ...but re: the brown rice vs. the white rice. Have you ever been looked at for Open Original Shared Link, by any chance? It's a condition that can involve problems with specific grain, veggies, fruits, etc... But brown rice causing problems and white rice being safe happens for those with fructose malabsorption...
