  1. I'm on a trip right now, the first one since I've been diagnosed AND actually been glutened so I know how awful it feels. I'm amazed how nervous I've been feeling just being in a hotel room and out of my gluten free house. I know they clean it, but I feel like everything I touch in here is a potential gluten hazard, and I hate that. Anyone else get this?...
  2. I had the same issue, with vitamin D going down even though I am outside in heavy sun a large part of the day. One of the things I found when trying to figure this out is that problems with your thyroid, kidneys and...hmm...maybe it was liver? (can't recall the last) seem to be related to low vitamin D levels. There was speculation that they might be needed...
  3. So sorry you're feeling worried! I had it, and it was easy peasy. Also, did they do anything ahead of time with an x-ray type thing? Our insurance required it: it looks through your bowels to make sure there is no obstruction so the pill goes right on through. Although honestly, it's really small - if you can pass a marble, you'd be able to pass this sucker...
  4. Ha, yeah, I saw that after I posted. *hits head* But for some reason, I couldn't get it to work for me, sigh.
  5. Thank you very much - I couldn't make any links to the full study work, so I couldn't see the details. Was wondering if possibly something was contaminated or done poorly, because I hadn't heard a thing on this anywhere else, really. Looks like it was. Thanks!

    ARCHIVED Tax Credit?

For more information, you can check out this link: Open Original Shared Link I've thought about it, although I didn't do it last year. If you do it, I believe you have to keep track of what gluten free foods you buy, the cost and amount (so you can have cost per amount to compare to gluten foods), and how often you go to the grocery store if you have...
  7. That is exactly my daughter's reaction - stomach pains now with gluten, no stomach pains before going gluten free. And as both my daughter and I are celiac, we've both reacted to the same thing a couple times, so it's a bit hard to swallow that both of us are 'not' reacting to the same thing at the same time, LOL. Also my father and I also both have specific...
  8. Could be. We know oil will do it - otherwise, we wouldn't need dedicated friers in order for french fries to be gluten free. And if we boiled a piece of bread in a pan of water, would we get glutened from it? I imagine so. However, I would also think that if gluten survives the processing of drinking water, the amounts would be very, very...
  9. Well, re: the the community event? Possible gluten issues I can think of off hand. 1. the tea. Since you have been following the diet so carefully, I'm assuming you checked the tea ingredients for barley and such, yes? But if the tea was processed on a machine that also processed teas with barley, that could be a CC source. Or if it's not a gluten free...
  10. I so agree. I heard of that and my jaw dropped. Not even looking at how it may interact with our bodies, I think of interfering with wild salmon populations. We can't even control the spread of genetically modified crops that are grown out in the open. I can't imagine why anyone thinks that genetically modified fish will somehow do better than stationary...

    ARCHIVED Another Opinion

Another issue with a young diagnosis is that in children, I understand the damage can come in 'patches' rather than an even distribution. In that case, if the doctor picks the wrong 'patch,' the damage can be missed. And many times, the damage isn't visible to the camera, only under the microscope, so picked the right spot can be difficult. However, I...
  12. Just out of curiosity - why were you tested again? And did the doctor who was testing you know you had a positive test previously when he tested? There should be no reason for either of them to be checking to see if you have celiac disease with a positive diagnosis already. It's not a disease like chicken pox that you 'get over.' It's more... It's kind...
  13. Has anyone read this study: Open Original Shared Link It's an old one - 2005 - and a small one. I haven't heard of it before at all. As I've only been able to read the abstract, I'd love to hear what anyone else has figured out about this, what you might have heard about it, etc... Partly because I'm wondering if it's saying what I think it's saying...
  14. Oh, you so have my sympathy! I have been on a diet of 7 foods for about a year, myself. Mine was bison meat (only from one company), amaranth, quinoa, avocado, sweet potato, sea weed, and sea salt. I sometimes tried a new food, maybe it would work for a few days or a week or so, and then I'd start reacting and back to the staples again. Just within the last...
  15. I was diagnosed with celiac disease, via blood test and biopsy, both. You know, if might be worth it to get tested again for a wheat allergy, if you find a good allergist. The one I just spoke to was hired by his practice as someone who was up to date on the latest information on allergies, and he was saying they are learning more and more about allergic...
  16. Oh hon, so sorry that you are so ill still! I would second gf_soph: if the docs haven't checked you for vitamin deficiencies, they really, really need to. If the levels are low and you take supplements, then they need to check you again in a month to see how well you are absorbing, so they will know if they need to up the dosage to compensate. My doctor...
  17. Wishing you good luck in finding a reason for your poor health! The changes I experienced in the first few weeks were the following. 1. Unrelenting hunger that lasted about 2 months I know not everybody gets this. 2. Some undiagnosed food allergies started bothering me more, especially dairy, potatoes, coffee, and sugarcane. ( I was tested for allergies...
  18. I honestly don't know, but I have wondered the same thing. We get a lot of used books as well, and my daughter was getting some CC periodically from unknown sources, so we started looking at the book possibility too. What I do know is that the gluten can definitely exist on the book if someone was eating while reading and a crumb spilled, etc... I was...
  19. This is what we did, with our son who also tested negative when his older sister was positive. He's on the small side, too. I have noticed a change in him after dropping gluten - oddly enough, more emotional and mood improvements than anything else (and his reaction to dairy changed). We found it so much of a challenge to keep cross-contamination from happening...
  20. Not in the USA, no. It's looking like it may be 20ppm or less when the decision is finally reached, though, so I know many companies are trying for that. But with no legal ramifications if they fail to meet that standard, I imagine some companies may not be as strict about cross-contamination and processing, you know? So even if the starch isn't an issue...
  21. Whether it has gluten may depend greatly on where it was made and whether it might have been cross-contaminated. (or the liquid smoke potential issue, too, of course) When I was calling up fish processing companies, a number of them had wheat based soy sauce that they used on many of their fish, and some of them said there was a good chance any fish processed...
  22. Don't believe it causes that reaction in people with no gluten issue, nope. I can say that I've seen no issue with my husband. Our house is gluten free, so he's been gluten free with the rest of us who HAVE to be. When I was making him lunch for work, he didn't get gluten for maybe 3 months straight. Then I stopped for a couple weeks and he had gluten during...
  23. Yeah - about as much fat as an equivalent amount of chicken, I understand. Higher in iron than beef. Taste is kind of like, hmmm, maybe beef with a little chicken liver added? Or a gamy beef, maybe.
  24. A few other ideas, based on recommendations from my own GI when I was having trouble. - has she been tested for any food allergies? If she has mild ones, it might be inhibiting her gut's ability to heal. - Is she eating dairy? that can also inhibit her ability to heal. - Is she eating any quinoa or gluten-free oats? A small percentage of celiacs seem...
  25. My father gets a little tired the next day and the big D for a day or two. My daughter has intense stomach pain/nausea and feels very shaky and has difficulty walking because her muscles feel so weak, for about 2-3 hours. Then feels more tired than usual and off and on shakiness and nausea for a day or two. I have a sudden attack of vertigo that makes...
