  1. Could you bring your own gluten-free wafers prior to mass, have the priest bless them, and then bring your own single wafer for communion? You could hand it to the priest/deacon when you approach them and then they could do their thing and hand it back to you. There are some nuns who make gluten free wafers. I'll look for that link/info. Here's the link...
  2. I haven't had any problems but they key is to ask questions. Things I love to get (sans gluten/soy of course): spring rolls, fresh or fried (if made with rice wrapper) pad thai yellow, red or green curry satay This made me laugh out loud!!
  3. I love Thai food. It's one of the places where I feel fairly safe eating. I typically get pad thai or a curry (typically yellow) and ask for no soy or fish sauce and no tofu. I grew up in an area where we had a lot of Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian people and restaurants so I've gotten to know the dishes well and which ones can be made to accommodate me, gluten...
  4. I had this same gnawing, grumbling, can't get enough food even though I've just eaten feeling and it turned out to be a soy intolerance. After I went gluten-free I was consuming more foods that contain soy (like gluten-free crackers, or bagels, pizza doughs) so this feeling was intensified. I was already an avid soy milk (ice cream, tofu, etc) consumer so...
  5. It strikes me odd that he would emphasize that this place can't accommodate you. If it's a fine dining kind of place they can surely accommodate you. I'd like to know how he knows they can't accommodate you. Did he call? If your presence is so important he would have picked a place that works for all of you. The fact that he wants you to sit there...
  6. RoseTapper I can't believe we have the same numb spot on our face - that's wild! I wonder if the celiac neuropathy follows a particular nerve path much like the way shingles does?
  7. Thank you all for your comments. I guess we can add this to the list of things doctors don't know anything about (and/or easily miss)! I started complaining about numb hands and the numb spot on my face at least 6 or 7 years ago. It was always blamed on my RA and disc issues. Now that I know there's a connection to the celiac I'll bring it up at my next...
  8. Got glutened at dinner last night and it was my own dumb fault. Had some pickles from a farm stand that did not have ingredients on them. I just assumed they'd be ok. (why did I assume that, I have no idea!) The good news is that the GI issues came rather quickly and finished rather quickly. I then spent the night on the couch wiped out and drinking tea...
  9. I'm mad for you. What an unsupportive prick! (I'm just saying what we're all thinking ) Quick google and found this: Dr. Oz on Oprah talking about celiac: Open Original Shared Link Multiple celiac resources on the Dr. Oz Show website: Open Original Shared Link Since he won't go to a website print them out and highlight the key points...
  10. That story gave me goosebumps! You found a keeper
  11. I am. My opinion is that IBS isn't really an illness, just a label doctors hand out to describe a set of symptoms when they're too lazy to find out the real cause. I believe my IBS is celiac, that they are one in the same.
  12. I'm dairy and soy free as well as gluten free and make a home made tuna noodle casserole that is super yummy. I make a roux of gluten-free flour (Bob's Red Mill) and light olive oil. Then add hemp milk or coconut milk (So Delicious makes a coconut milk that is not coconut-y in flavor) I use Tinkyada pasta but the trick is to undercook it. This way it...
  13. I drink Van Houtte vanilla coffee and never had an issue. Here is some information: Open Original Shared Link Green Mountain is also fantastic and all their coffees are gluten free. If you're very concerned you could drink unflavored coffee but buy a flavored creamer. I use So Delicious Coconut Milk creamer and they have a vanilla flavor. They're...
  14. Heck, even if you were a doctor the last thing you'd suspect is celiac disease! Edited to add: shame on our incompetent medical professionals who have managed to make us feel like the responsible ones for their lack of understanding and thoroughness in finding out what ails us. Phooey on them!
  15. Jason, you did everything right but the restaurant didn't. Next time send it back and say it has to be very plain due to allergies. You don't have to go into specifics. I don't think this is correct, at least in my area. Tempura, one of my fave foods pre-gluten-free, was the reason I started looking into gluten as being an issue. Tempura kills me...
  16. Did a bit of googling but much of the information that comes up is school/campus specific. This link is specific to U of Washington but there are lots of good nuggets of info you could use for searching for your own college. Open Original Shared Link Excerpt: Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act...
  17. Mmmm, let's see.... gluten free for about 10 months and still coming to grips with it. I'm at a point where 3-4 weeks will pass with no CC issues. I have a good handle on it at home but it's eating out and eating at other people's homes where the risks get me.
  18. I totally agree.
  19. I heard this phrase the other day and it stuck with me; you're not giving up you're changing the timetable. You've made a tremendous contribution in 3 months for a cause so many people believe in but few can (or would) actually do. That's amazing. Right now you need you. You can apply those same skills to help yourself, to get healthier, to get stronger...
  20. I find the opposite happened for me. I used to love variety, hated leftovers and wouldn't eat the same thing two days in a row. I loved all types of foods and cuisines and loved going out to eat and experimenting with my cooking. When I went gluten free and then dairy free I worried the lack of variety (at least in the beginning) would really get to me. However...
  21. It seems to help with digestion and keeping things running smoothly and how my middle feels in general. I have much less gas and bloating and discomfort. I'm new to probiotics so I have nothing to compare it to but I like it and do notice it working. Sometimes vitamins/supplements make me feel crappy and this one doesn't.
  22. I am dairy, gluten and soy free and I use PB8. I like it a lot. Bought it at Whole Foods. The folks that work in that section are very knowledgeable and helpful. Here you can see the ingredient list: Open Original Shared Link
  23. Hi SusieC, Your doctor is correct, you need to be on a gluten-free diet for life. Consuming gluten causes damage to your intestines regardless of whether or not you have immediate and recognizable symptoms. That damage can cause lots of other health issues including malnutrition, ataxia and even cancer. The nutritionist gave you very bad and incorrect...
  24. My understanding is that MSG in the US is not made from soy or wheat. It's made mostly from beets and/or sugar. However you could still be sensitive to it.
  25. The only way to know for sure is to ask the person who cooked the chicken.
