  1. Thank you all for your replies. I'm 98% sure I'm not getting glutened. When I get glutened I have a food poisoning like reaction in the middle of the night that last for hours and then I feel beat up for days. All my food, toiletries, meds, vitamins and household items have been vetted for gluten, soy and dairy. I'm an avid label reader and re-reader...
  2. I'm not sure if this is a celiac thing, an age thing or maybe my thyroid thing (undiagnosed but a suspect) but maybe you can shed some light. I can't concentrate worth a damn. And the funny thing is I can't even concentrate on not concentrating. I'm easily distracted, fuzz brained and can't remember a thing. It's most noticeable at work. I was laid off...
  3. I take it this is an incentive or bonus for reaching a particular goal? Is it for your own personal goal or is it a group thing? Is it just something nice the company does or is it considered a benefit? If it's a nice gesture I wouldn't fight it. If it's a group goal and reward they should offer you a gluten-free alternative but I'm not sure I'd fight it...
  4. I love the mass email idea. Any pointers? How did you start it off and what kind of response did you get? I think this might be good for a few reasons. So many people don't know what gluten is, and certainly don't know anything about celiac. Sometimes they think I can have whole wheat but not white and some people in the family confuse glucose for gluten...
  5. I haven't been able to lose weight either! It fluctuates so much though. Up and down day to day anywhere from 3-8 pounds. I'm eating a fraction of what I ate before and my appetite has shrunk. I'm not finishing meals. I'm eating more fruit and veggies. I'm not planning my day around cravings or food. I'm actually getting a 'full' feeling. For the longest...
  6. I second the recommendation to say "allergy" too because intolerance and celiac doesn't mean much to your average person who doesn't struggle with this. On the east coast we have some of those same chains, these are ones that I know have gluten-free options; PF Changs, Outback, The 99, Paparazzi, Bertucci's, Uno's, Five Guy's Burgers, Chipotle. When...
  7. I never used probiotics until recently and I am using PB8 (gluten-free, soy free, dairy free). It really seems to be working for me. My middle is soooo quiet, non-rumbly, not bloated and I have significantly less gas. You just gave me a good idea about making my own coconut yogurt. The one from the store is too sweet. Never considered making my own.....
  8. I had shingles as a kid too and there were no meds and they didn't give me pain killers either. My mother insisted on scrubbing it with a wash cloth until it bled, convinced I was dirty. I still have the scars. I also had shingles in my teens and 20's but nothing, knock on wood, in a long time. Looking back I definitely think some of my shingles were actually...
  9. Yes, sadly I have. I had horrible seasonal allergies as a kid and was allergic to anything with fur, feathers or foliage. I was dragged to the allergist every week for a shot or two of the stuff I was allergic to in order to build up resistance. Honestly, I don't think it worked at all. My mother still goes. This means she's been going for 20+ years and she...
  10. Great question. Looking forward to what people have to suggest as I'm new to the vitamin portion of dealing with this lifestyle as well. I'm currently on 50k units of vitamin D once a week (Rx from GI doc, my D level was super low) In addition I take a multivitamin and a calcium/vitamin D daily I take a digestive enzyme, grapefruit seed extract pill...
  11. I love that giant MAC book with all the ingredients. The one I flipped through did have current listings and the ingredients were clearly labeled with wheat, oats, etc. Avon is great for shampoo, bath products and cosmetics and much more affordable than MAC (although their eyes shadows pale in comparison to MACs). They produce a list of all their gluten...
  12. Exactly! What you have is a narcissistic momster in law! The problem here is not the cost of the diet. The problem is your MIL is not respecting your boundaries. She's being rude to you and to her son, humiliating you in the restaurant, commenting on the fate of your marriage, and discussing your diet and budget with other family members. None of it...
  13. Over the years I've had to cancel many plans due to my RA or due to a migraine or GI troubles. I've found that the friends who truly understand and get it will be the ones who are the most supportive. They might be disappointed but they never give me grief. The friends who did give me grief are no longer my friends. I had one friend who would challenge me...
  14. Tehana, are you still in the Boston area? If so check out the Celiac Center at Beth Israel Hospital. Their doctors also see patients in Lexington which can be a bit more convenient than going into the city depending on where you are. I can't even tell you how amazing it is to be validated by a medical professional after all these years of trying to figure...
  15. I second the pizza recipe request! My emotions have been up and down and all over the map. Some days I take it all in stride and other days I'm just so down. As time goes on though I have more ups than downs. I think I have some more food intolerances (tapioca maybe) going on but haven't figure it out yet. I also think my thyroid is messed up...
  16. Cold here too which is odd because I had always been a furnace. Always had low bp and did a lot of fainting as a kid. I'm having my thyroid checked at my next doc appointment. It may be the reason why I'm not losing any weight despite being on the healthiest 'diet' I have ever been on. My body is hell bent on staying one weight no matter what I do... gym...
  17. When I got my results from enterolab it said I did not have either of the classic celiac genes (2, 8) but did have one gene associated with gluten intolerance (4, 5). I took this to mean that there is a genetic component to non-celiac gluten insensitivity.
  18. I've had RA most of my life so I've dealt with being different from an early age. It takes a lot of cojones to get through adolescence, the teen age years and the indecisive 20's with a physical disability. I finally felt that in my 30's and now early 40's I had gotten past the worst of all that and settled into being me, liking and loving me. Then out of...
  19. I'm interested in being tested but the name of the lab has been hidden via the spam filter. Is there a way that can be posted so that we can see the information? At first I thought, wow, that's a terrible name for a lab!
  20. This is a great topic. I think I may be reacting to tapioca too. I had the Starfish gluten-free battered fish last night for dinner and today I have a noisy rumbly tummy and have had a few minor trips to the bathroom. No pain but a lot of gas. I love this fish so much so I certainly don't want to talk ill of it but this is the second time I've reacted to...
  21. I can relate to your post as well. I think I'm more upset at the loss of convenience and spontaneity than the loss of the actual food itself. It means more planning in my life which at times I can really resent. I already feel overwhelmed with planning responsibilities for life in general. I'm making my way through the grieving process now and it's getting...
  22. I hear you! Living with an auto-immune illness can be tough emotionally. I think the unpredictability is worse than any of the pain and discomfort because it makes planning things tough. I've had RA most of my life (and likely celiac too) and the unpredictability of it can still put me in the dumps now and then. In a nutshell - it sucks. I deal with it pretty...
  23. Oh no - is it your own manager who is the main bully/teaser? Shame on him! Go over his head asap. I've had my share of weird bosses too. I had one years ago who flip flopped between being supportive and a total jerk about my RA (way before celiac diagnosis). I ended up leaving but the new me wouldn't do that. I'd give him a good what for and then go to his...
  24. Since going gluten-free I don't crave sweets like I used to but for the rare occasion I keep these brownies in my freezer. They even have single serving size. I can buy these at my regular grocery store and at Whole Foods. Open Original Shared Link
  25. Got so excited when I saw Woodman's! Here in New England Woodman's is a popular clam shack. I immediately thought of gluten-free fried clams and got excited. Now I have a cooking challenge to add to my list.
