ARCHIVED Chocolate Dream Candy Bars By Rice Dream
ciavyn replied to adrhey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Jerseyangel - thanks! I'll try them the next time I see them. I'm glad you said something or I probably would have avoided them, too. Although, I got to say...the more healthy food and less processed, sugary foods I eat, the less I crave them. -
Richard - we do, but sometimes we hear things on here or other gluten free boards or friends, and we trust that it's true. I'm glad to see I'm wrong about the coating, but I've yet to see dedicated fries fryer, when BK also serves onion rings. Believe you me, I like BK SO much better than McD and would prefer to go there! So perhaps some do, but mine around...

ARCHIVED Why Don'T People Understand?
ciavyn replied to mommaofthreebeans's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is important in your life...but not everyone is going to feel that way. It's frustrating, but that is just how it is. I used to be in sales, and I would be beyond frustrated when someone would stand me up for an appointment, even after I confirmed it with them the day before. The reality is: it just isn't a priority for them. The good news is... -
ARCHIVED I Think I'M Still Consuming Gluten Somewhere, But Where?
ciavyn replied to c12's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
From what I understand, it could also just be that your system needs more time. Every instance I have of a symptom, I'm looking around for something explain it! But lately, I've only been eating whole foods, and the reality is, I'm just not healed up yet. It's better, but not perfect. -
Anytime - and good luck!

I'm pretty sure they are fried with the onion rings, and someone told me that they have a coating on them that contains gluten. It stinks, too, because I LOVE their french fries.

That's how I feel about Amy's frozen dishes. They gluten and dairy free, two of my big no-no's, yet I feel like crap afterwards, and have all the symptoms of having eaten gluten. You are definitely not alone!

Horsegirl - that is incredibly frustrating. Something to consider: Since you can't get away from cooking, is there a way to make it more fun so you enjoy it? Do you have any close friends who would keep you company and maybe help prepare ingredients? My girlfriend loves to sit in my kitchen while I cook, and then chat and do our nails in between cookie batches...

ARCHIVED Bacon Wrapped Chicken
ciavyn replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hey purple - I gotta tell you - the pumpkin ice cream is Edy's. It was their holiday flavor, and it is probably the best I've ever had. I made everything BUT the ice cream. PS - I forgot to get the chive cream cheese and got regular. So I added some dried chives and garlic powder, and it tasted great. -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Dream Candy Bars By Rice Dream
ciavyn replied to adrhey's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh my gosh - I've been feeling weird the last few days, and I couldn't put a finger on it. I just had some of this bar - the rice milk chocolate - over the weekend. It never occurred to me it might be the rice dream. I had not idea that they weren't gluten free. Thank you for point it out. I'll never try that again! -
ARCHIVED Need Guidance Fast!
ciavyn replied to NHMOM's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Try making her some bread, if that is important to you. Pamela's bread mix is excellent, and is sold at a lot of major stores (I can get it at WalMart here). Kinnikinnick bread rolls and breads are in the organic freezer section of some larger grocery stores. But even more than that, if you want to get her off gluten to see if it helps, make her some homemade... -
I was just reading posts about a frustrating holiday meal, inconsiderate family members choosing restaurants, and other annoying elements of the gluten free lifestyle. While always having to prepare food myself and call ahead to restaurants can absolutely stink, overall, I find myself having a fascinating response to this lifestyle change: relief. I no longer...

ARCHIVED Bacon Wrapped Chicken
ciavyn replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Purple - this was amazing. I made it last night for some company, and it turned out awesome! Paired with some baked basmati, dessert of gluten-free banana date bread and pumpkin ice cream, it made a delicious meal. Thank you! -
ARCHIVED Namaste To The Rescue!
ciavyn replied to momxyz's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Check out WalMart or Wegman's. They both carry some of their products sometimes. You can also find it on the website-that-shall-not-be-named. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Foods
ciavyn replied to CecilyF's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just use gluten free pasta and the cheese packet inside the box - check the ingredients, but you should be okay. You can also do the same on your own with some american cheese. There's lots of fun, easy recipes for homemade macaroni and cheese. I buy my gluten free pasta at giant or Wegman's, it is about $3.50 a bag, depending on the brand. -
ARCHIVED Glucose Syrup (wheat)?
ciavyn replied to mushroom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do y'all not have Hershey's?? Ghiardelli's semisweet? Have you checked into jolly ranchers? Luden's cherry cough drops (I'll never believe these are anything but candy) are safe. Try to get candies from the US mabye? Order online? - you might be safer, as I've yet to see too many candies with wheat in them, and I live next to Hershey, PA, so I've got LOTS... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Flour At Costco?
ciavyn replied to Coleslawcat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got it at the Gluten Free Source, LLC in Dillsburg, PA. You can order from them online. I thought the price was high, but I'm not disappointed. I cut it half and half with sorghum for baking, and it makes an amazing cookie. -
ARCHIVED Namaste To The Rescue!
ciavyn replied to momxyz's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm with you - I haven't had much time to experiment with making my own mixes yet. But so far, what has worked best for me: Pamela's bread mix is so far my hand's down favorite mix. Super yummy, great for french toast or butter and honey on top. I love it. I would love it even if I could have any kind of bread. Tom Sawyers blend (already has xanthan... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Flour At Costco?
ciavyn replied to Coleslawcat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hm, I got a 10 lb. bag of Tom Sawyers Flour for $32...so that sounds pretty amazing. I'm going to see if ours here in PA have it. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Honeymoon Resort?
ciavyn replied to lhorton25's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Miila's Mom - thank you for that info. My husband is dying to go on another cruise, and I've been dreading to go...now I know we can both be happy!! -
Update on bread mixes: I just made my second Pamela's loaf in my Kenmore bread machine, and it turned out PERFECT. I find myself actually craving the taste of this bread with just butter and honey on it. I'm going to use it for french toast, tomorrow, but I have to say - this is really good stuff, and I would like it whether or not it was gluten free. Well...

Ah...I'll try that the next time! Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Soy Cream Cheese
ciavyn replied to Chef16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I buy it at large grocery stores that have an organic section: Wegman's and Giant Foods here in PA. It's fairly common. And really, really good for dips and cooking. -
Update on Olive Garden - I just spoke to their customer relations office. When you are ordering their salad: order it crouton free, and quite honestly, I'd order it without any toppings. THEN order the to-go dressing cups. These are prepackaged from the company, and are gluten free (no CC to worry about.) It's a safer way to enjoy their yummy dressing (definitely...
