  1. Amen! Good for you - and Happy New Year to you too!
  2. Actually, I found them, and they taste horrible. Like dry, bland corn...cardboard. I have no idea what to do with them now. Just a thought on books....the new foods were costing me so much - and I'm not talking processed, I'm talking just stocking up on healthier, naturally gluten free stuff - that I couldn't afford to buy books. So I checked out my...
  3. You are right, that does suck. Here's what I don't get. If you were vegetarian or vegan, it would have been expected that either they go someplace you could also eat, or it would have been labeled a kids' event, and you would have gone somewhere else. I don't think it's fair to not expect others to still enjoy their regular foods...but I also don't think...
  4. Since I didn't see a thread addressing this city, I'm going to start this one and try to update it as I find more. So far, the restaurants that have responded more than happily to my request for gluten free foods are: Cafe Fresco - downtown Harrisburg, PA - will make anything you need - just go back and talk to the chef. He has no problem using new...
  5. I am a big fan of the Vanilla Rooibos herbal tea, and I asked Starbucks via email about it's gluten free status, due to it being from an African bush. I received a response very quickly.
  6. Another thought - I just talked to a friend who's been doing the gluten-free lifestyle for several years. I explained to her that I had a typical glutened reaction last night: bloating, severe gas and diarrhea, sharp pain in my small intestines. But I'll be darned if I can figure out where it came from, as I ate only things I made at home. She suggested that...
  7. StacyA - you make a good point, which would explain why I was miserable last night, but couldn't pinpoint why. I have yet to figure it out, but I wonder if it was from the night before.
  8. This is great! Thanks for the idea, optimisticmom42. I always travel with 3x5 cards and that is a great use, rather than having to explain everything all the time, while you have people around you.
  9. Not necessarily - if you know the restaurant ahead of time, you can call ahead. OR you can ask for no seasoning. You are in a tough job market - you do not want to risk anyone seeing you as high-maintenance or a problem when you are going for a job interview. They can figure that out later! But keep your medical stuff to yourself, and be creative. You...
  10. It sounds like you found your answer. If you feel better eating meats and veggies, try that for a while and see how you feel. You also may want to consider seeking a different doctor, or perhaps someone with a more holistic bent.
  11. Woohoo! I hope y'all are correct in saying that it may go away over time. I have panic attacks and anxiety, ADD, and a short-term memory deficiency that is really frustrating, as I'm an intelligent person, and therefore have a hard time when I feel like I'm acting "stupid." Brain fog is a great way to express it. Curious to see if after 6 months I can see...
  12. Make your own food and take it, or make a side dish and dessert that you can have, and put your portion aside ahead of time. That is what I did for Thanksgiving. That way you are still a part of it, but can feel safe about the food you can eat. Don't ever sit there with an empty plate again if you can avoid it - it's your holiday, too! Make sure you can enjoy...
  13. You came to the right place. I'm new to this world, too. Two thoughts: 1. have a sense of humor about the whole thing. I tease everyone and say, "Actually, I'm a cooking snob and no one can live up to my standards." I always say it as a joke, and laugh if they say I'm being overly picky. Of course, I'm outspoken, so people disagreeing with me is not...
  14. Get the toaster - trust me, there is no way to clean your old one (I tried) and there's some gluten free bread out there that is pretty darn tasty. I'll never eat textureless, tasteless, wheat bread again!
  15. Once you get the hang of it, the store trips go much faster. My first few visits were painstakingly slow, but now, I can get in and get out quickly. Best brownies I know of: Open Original Shared Link (courtesy of board member purple, and the lovely ladies on the kill the gluten website).
  16. Welcome Maryfrances! You will find out so much here. There are many very knowledgeable folks on this board - I read it every day to understand more of what I can and can't have, or how to make what I want, gluten free. Just take it a step at a time - I did buy new pots and pans, but because I needed them. And get rid of wood items that might have come...
  17. Not to discourage you, but I'm also diagnosed ADD, and while my physical aches and pains have disappeared, my GI issues have gotten increasingly better, and the issues of fatigue are a thing of the past...my ADD symptoms haven't shown any signs of decreasing. So perhaps it will help, perhaps it won't. I still say it's worth trying, as if you follow it strictly...
  18. My friend who finally convinced me to try this diet is 67, and still travels at least 280 days a year for work. I am convinced both my mother and grandmother have it, and they are both over 60 (grandma is 85).
  19. Check out some of the local places: Cafe Fresco and Marie's Cafe both are willing to work with our needs. Also, Jo-Jo's in Mechanicsburg is claiming a gluten free pizza (I'm not sure how they could do this in contaminated ovens, but I haven't visited yet). For bagels and such, hit up the frozen section of the market. Gluten Free Source gets some things in...
  20. I've had ongoing fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and brain fog. All of which are improved after a little over a month gluten free.
  21. Pamela's bread mix is not bad, and made some rockin' french toast. I too look forward to using my own recipes, if only to save $$.
  22. chasbari - this speaks to those who like to cheat their diets. Those who don't take it seriously make it bad for the rest of us. Example: my great aunt was supposedly diabetic, and always gave a diatribe about all the foods she couldn't eat, the worst of the evils were ice cream and sugar...so guess who ordered the largest hot fudge sundae after every...
  23. Pixi is the brand - it's one of those special Target lines of makeup. Check out the lip shimmers by Burt's bees, in the darker colors. They apply just like lipstick. My only complaint is that they don't last very long - I have to reapply every two hours. But the color is deep and it feels very yummy with its peppermint finish.
  24. This is really awful. I read the story and visited the screen shots...truly a cruel prank.
  25. Target has them at pretty reasonable prices, but don't overlook taking your heart rate on your own. It's free, and unless you are needing an uber accurate reading, as you get to know your body, you will know what your heart rate should be. I am part of an intense aerobic class (kickboxing) and we take our heart rate periodically throughout the class. It's...
