"Glutenated?" I love that! I'm going to use that word from now on. So, symptoms you ask? I think you and I pretty closely mirror symptoms. I had ONE nacho Dorito...just one lousy Dorito after months of being gluten-free, and daggumit if I didn't get for three weeks. Mine starts out as vicious diarrhea, sometimes not making it to the bathroom in time or...

I'm going to take this in another direction. Jenny -- why would an intelligent, clearly well-spoken woman value herself and feeling good so LITTLE that she'd disregard what is healthy for her and choose what is so very unhealthy? Don't take this the wrong way -- THINK about it. I had to. I struggle with sugar and carbs like you wouldn't believe. I'm not pointing...

Have fun and do as much of your shopping for perishables there as you can -- they usually have the best prices! Let's see -- I fourth (or fifth) the Pamela's bread mix mention. Yummy, and I freeze it to enjoy individual slices. I LOVE almond butter on Lundberg rice cakes, with a little bit of honey. I think Wegman's has THE best corn chips ever. one...

I definitely know Pottsvile! Been there many times. Welcome!

Thank you for the feedback. It definitely, ah, puts life in perspective a bit when you are dodging people in the grocery store and hoping to get out of the aisle before everyone figures out it's you! I can't wait to get my system back to normal!!

ARCHIVED Is There Any Tortilla Out There That Can Bend?
ciavyn replied to runningcrazy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A little hint on hard corn tortillas. I made mexican chicken in the crock pot in place of beef, and we had them in hard corn tortillas. The chicken got way to moist, and the mix was very watery. Flavor was awesome though. But what happened was this: the corn tortillas were thick and hard -- El Paso's, I think -- and the moisture softened them enough that... -
So I'll throw this out there because...well, let's face it, getting glutened is annoying. I've found that when I'm glutened, it takes about three weeks or so for my system to even out again. This last time, I ate ONE Nacho Dorito chip, before thinking to check the back of the bag. Because I can have other Dorito flavors, it didn't occur to me that they could...

ARCHIVED Success Freezing Homemade Bread?
ciavyn replied to torie224's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I second this suggestion! I slice mine, eat the desired amount, then wrap each individual piece in foil, drop in a freezer bag and freeze. That way I can pull out one piece at a time to enjoy. I do the same with gluten free dessert breads and brownies, too. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed-Not Happy
ciavyn replied to Sher1's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sher1 -- just a thought, as I'm reading between the lines of your last post. Maybe you should teach HIM to cook for himself, especially now that he's diagnosed celiac. You are doing him no favors if you do all the cooking, as when he moves out, he won't know how to fend for himself, and with celiac, you have to. I cooked, but very, very basic stuff before... -
ARCHIVED Lady Parts Question Related To Celiac?
ciavyn replied to PrincessHungry's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Don't know if this helps...but I had something similar for YEARS, and all the doctors thought I was nuts. I didn't test positive for anything. As it worked out, I had an irregular bladder syndrome. I had to take men's prostate medication and several other thing, but I eventually got better. It was AWFUL and it hurt like crazy. My point: keep after an answer... -
ARCHIVED Alright Then Who Eats Them?
ciavyn replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've had them several times with no issue. BUT I'm just as happy with Ore Ida's (sp?) fast food french fries. -
ARCHIVED Question About The Mental And Emotional Side
ciavyn replied to whyme's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello! And welcome to your (our) new world! It does get easier - I promise. Re: depression and mental issues. I'm diagnosed ADD, minor OCD, depression, PTSD and have issues with anxiety. I have never been medicated, by choice. Here's what I've learned. Depression feeds on our belief that nothing will ever get better. We are useless, helpless, no one... -
ARCHIVED Any Ideas On Stabilizing The Weight Once Going Gluten Free?
ciavyn replied to T.H.'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
What does your doctor say? I would make sure you don't have any additional issues. If your body is normal, then it does come down on eating more calorie rich foods. Perhaps more protein? I've lost weight since going gluten free because I eat so much healthier now, but I have no trouble maintaining because I eat a lot of food (I'm training for a half marathon... -
Oh what the heck, I'll add in my $0.02. You are going through a traumatic experience, and it's normal to feel frustrated and overwhelmed. And with all the work and research you are doing, you will eventually find the answer...and seeing a therapist would be a great move. Not just because it may help you get better perspective and learn coping skills (thank...

ARCHIVED Need gluten-free Rice/Almond Milk
ciavyn replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I do great on Almond Breeze by Blue Diamond. Use the unsweetened Vanilla on my gluten-free oats in the morning, and use if for almost everything else, as well. No issues here. -
ARCHIVED Acyclovir gluten-free?
ciavyn replied to teamworkjr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wasn't aware gluten could cause cold sores. I get vicious cold sores, and used to get them every few weeks. I was miserable. I haven't had one since going gluten free. Since they are typically caused by stress on the body, and gluten causes stress on the system, it makes sense. Gosh, I love this board! -
ARCHIVED Benefits Of Living Gluten-Free
ciavyn replied to Glutin-Free Man's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll throw in on this one - what a great thread! I LOVE the fact I'm getting away from sugar. I've always considered myself a sugar addict. Candy and chocolate beckoned me with a fervor so intense, I rarely if ever resisted. It got so bad I would literally be ill eating it, and still want more. Ironically I've been able to maintain my weight via exercise... -
It does get better! Once you start feeling better, you will realize how much easier this is. I don't even want the junk food I used to eat before. I love feeling healthier, not having GI issues...I don't think I realized how much I enjoyed it until I got glutened! After three weeks of misery, I am finally back to feeling like me again. It's fantastic!

ARCHIVED Cheap Work Lunch Ideas?
ciavyn replied to katinagj's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I pack a lunch everyday so I feel your pain. I either take soup (I make my own on Sundays, and package it for the week or freeze it in small containers). I take potatoes or yams that I can bake in the microwave. Beef jerky is a great idea! Lots of snackable veggies like broccoli, sliced cucumber, baby carrots, and I take hummus or mix up dairy free ranch... -
Eggs, bacon, sausage, homefries, breakfast steak, ham steak, cereal, homemade oatmeal (I use bob's red mill), omelettes, egg cups (two minute jobs made popular by hungry girl), pancakes, french toast...the list goes on. Trust me, definitely the easiest meal of the day for me!

ARCHIVED Can It Hurt?
ciavyn replied to JustLovely9216's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm undiagnosed, and my doctor didn't question it...of course, I haven't had anything major. Just requested that my medication for an infection be gluten free. I've been glutened twice since getting off of it, and I'm confident I have issues with it. I also have some other intolerances that I knew about before. As TrillumHunter pointed out -- if you eat a... -
ARCHIVED Tinkyada Pasta -- Q About Rinsing
ciavyn replied to debkohn's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This just proves I don't follow directions well. I've never rinsed it, and never had a problem. -
ARCHIVED Very Frustrated, How To Find Hidden Gluten
ciavyn replied to teresasupermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I feel your pain. I found that Fruity Pebbles and Chex are safe for me, but honestly, it is easier to just eat foods that I make, or things that are naturally gluten free. Keep the rest to a minimum, and I take my phone with me and google everything I'm not sure about. Several people said that Kix was fine with them. I haven't personally tried it. I decided... -
ARCHIVED Became Intollerant To Rice?
ciavyn replied to tfrankenberger's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I had to go off of it myself. I can have it in small amounts, but too much of it, and I feel like I've had gluten! Can't tell you why, can only say I feel better when I have it in small doses. -
ARCHIVED Harrisburg, Pa Gluten Free Restaurants And Food Options
ciavyn replied to ciavyn's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Hey gang - Giant in Camp Hill, PA & Mechanicsburg, PA has some decent stuff. They also have sub rolls by kinnikinnick. They will also cut deli meat for you and clean the blades before doing so. For pizza - check out the Healthy Grocer in Camp Hill for pizza crusts you can load yourself, or I recommend Jo-Jo's in downtown Mechanicsburg. I did not...
