ARCHIVED Looking For A Gluten Free Vitamin/Mineral Supplement
jackay replied to jackay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know that I can't handle beets so this one is out. Beet juice is used in a lot of yogurt and kefir for coloring so once I bring in more dairy, I'll have to watch labels for it there, too. -
ARCHIVED Looking For A Gluten Free Vitamin/Mineral Supplement
jackay posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Can anyone recommend a basic gluten free multivitamin and mineral supplement? I have so many sensitivities and am not having luck finding a supplement without anything extra added to it. A lot of brands have citrus bioflavonoids. I tested severely intolerant to lemons so question if they are safe for me. I just purchased Kirkman Advanced Adult Multi... -
ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption And Celiac
jackay replied to tfrankenberger's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I tested moderately intolerant to fructose but not all fruits. My doctor told me I can continue to eat the fruits that tested acceptable. I question that. I would say I am also sensitive to saliciyates. I was getting such bad headaches after starting to use salycilic acid on a corn my my foot. I was taking a pain reliever that contained aspirin for... -
ARCHIVED How Careful Do I Have To Be?
jackay replied to Kategrad7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sounds like the same situation here as far as cooking goes. I just don't know how careful I have to be because I am still having health issues. I am intolerant to so many foods that I don't know if I am reacting to something else or still gluten. I've eliminated all the foods I tested intolerant to and some days feel better and other days I don't.... -
ARCHIVED Plastics And Tupperware In Dishwasher
jackay replied to jackay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How do you manage living with a family of boys and not getting glutened? Obviously if they use different colored scrubby pads, they are cleaning up gluten. -
ARCHIVED Plastics And Tupperware In Dishwasher
jackay replied to jackay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am looking for a cheap pan for cooking wheat spaghetti and noodles and will save the good ones for gluten free foods. I'm on the look out at resale shops as money is really tight. I could wash the plastic and tupperware in the sink but just don't feel good about a cutting board getting clean unless it goes in the dishwasher. I do make sure that none... -
I have finally trained my husband to not put his dishes in the dishwasher so I can wash them first. I quit using plastics and Tupperware for myself. He still uses it for his foods. Is there any chance of my glass dishes and silverware getting contaminated from water dripping off the plastic and Tupperware containers? My guess is that only food that would...

ARCHIVED Are The Sticky Labels On Fruit Gluten-Free?
jackay replied to Lynayah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good to learn that cornstarch is in envelope glue. I need to avoid that, too. -
ARCHIVED Less Anxious, More Depressed
jackay replied to jackay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My two month update: My depression is much better but insomnia is a problem. I started taking Vitamin B12 drops at bedtime as I tested low on that. Was hoping for sleep improvement but so far I'm still not getting consistant sleep. Maybe it will just take more time to really get the B12 in my system. I'm going to an exercise class four days a week... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Maintain A High Fibre Diet On A Gluten Free Lifestyle?
jackay replied to miaryan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is very encouraging. My test indicated that I had mild candida albicans. I'm hoping that it was mild that I am ridding myself of it. I don't know if it is causing any of my symptoms. I did read that it can cause insomnia which is still a problem for me. -
ARCHIVED Unverified Celiac - A Few Questions?
jackay replied to iDaydream's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Good luck with college. I hope you find truly understanding friends. I suggest you tell everyone that you have a severe allergy to wheat, barley and ryethat is life threatening. -
ARCHIVED How Do I Maintain A High Fibre Diet On A Gluten Free Lifestyle?
jackay replied to miaryan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sue, How did you treat your bacteria and parasites? I had (or still have) bad bacteria. I tried berberine and licorice to treat it and had severe reactions to both. My doctor said to increase my probiotics to have enough good bacteria to overcome the bad. A couple months after that, I tested positive for candida. I figured after taking such a high... -
ARCHIVED "gluten Free" Items That "got You"
jackay replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Either I got accidentally glutened yesterday or I reacted to chia seeds, which I tried for the first time. The label says they are gluten free and I believe they are. I checked them online and there is only this one product. I have emailed the company for the second time (once before trying them) and haven't heard back. I may challenge them in a couple... -
ARCHIVED Buying Whole Grains
jackay replied to shepgs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been using Basic H to wash my grains. I contacted the company and was told it doesn't contain gluten. I hope I was given the right information. -
ARCHIVED How To Be Annoying Without Feeling Bad....
jackay replied to detritus's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I will not order anything from the meat counter. I see what they do back there and how the meats that are displayed can become cc. It has to be processed at a meat processing plant for me to buy it. -
I am too scared to eat out. It has been rather boring. I do occasionally go out with friends and eat before I go. Can't handle smelling pizza though. If I ever heal from all my other intolerances besides gluten, I'll try eating out again. Until then it just isn't going to happen.

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed/ My Story
jackay replied to DonaldandAlanda Evans's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I sympathize with you. I have been going through somewhat of a similar problem. Four or five years ago I started out with severe headaches and super high blood pressure. I tried so many medications for migraines and nothing helped. I finally tried a muscle relaxant that caused severe depression and anxiety. I did get some relief from my headache though... -
I tested that I having a mild candida growth. I know I am suppose to be off all sweeteners and yeast. I am taking garlic every day to fight this. I have been researching candida and have read that I shouldn't have starches, dairy or fruits. My doctor didn't say anything about eliminating or limiting these foods. I feel I really need them. For dairy...

ARCHIVED Per A Request, Here Is A List Of What I Can And Can'T Eat
jackay replied to virginiagl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
virginiagl, How did you find your intolerances and allergies? Was it trial and error or testing? What symptoms do you have? I found out about my food intolerances from blood work. I am avoiding the foods that I am intolerant to but still am having issues of insomnia and gas. I didn't have much of a gas problem before going gluten free. My doctor... -
ARCHIVED How Long Does It Take For B12 Supplements To Work?
jackay replied to jackay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
How often does your doctor check your B12 level? Are you feeling more energetic? I was hoping to get sleep once I started sublinqual B12. It has been only five days so I'm probably expecting too much too soon. Most nights I'm only getting 1-1/2 hours of sleep. Sleep seems to be getting worse instead of better. Even though I'm not getting much sleep... -
ARCHIVED Constipation
jackay replied to pheobepander's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I usually don't have a problem with constipation. I started taking calcium with magnesium citrate and got diarrhea. I had to switch back to a calcium supplement that doesn't contain magnesium. Whenever I do feel a little constipated, I take just one calcium with magnesium and it does the trick for me. A good probiotic is also very helpful as is psyllium... -
Good to know. I feel fortunate that I don't suffer from upper respiratory problems. Suffered enough from GI problems and anxiety to make up for it.
-
I didn't have a flu shot and haven't been sick all winter. I am wondering since gluten intolerance is an autoimmune response, am I building up a lot of antibodies that are fighting upper respiratory illnesses? By eliminating gluten, will my antibody level go down causing me to start catching things like the common cold and flu?
-
I'd say being gluten free is a life long learning process. It does gets a lot easier the more we learn.

ARCHIVED Per A Request, Here Is A List Of What I Can And Can'T Eat
jackay replied to virginiagl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you tried teff, millet, amaranth, or quinoa? A bowl of cooked millet with some sea salt and melted butter reminds me of whole wheat bread. Red quinoa reminds me of wild rice. I haven't tried teff or amaranth yet but am going to give them a try soon. I have a super long list of foods that I can't tolerate. I'm hoping as my tummy heals that I'll...
