ARCHIVED Better Batter Flour
Coleslawcat replied to zus888's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use it all the time and everything turns out beautifully. I've done cakes, cookies and pizza crust so far. I love that stuff! It already has the xanthan gum mixed in as well as pectin to help with binding. -
ARCHIVED Steel Cut Oats Replacement?
Coleslawcat replied to kathleenp's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Only about 10% of celiacs react to the gluten free oats, so after you've had a few months gluten free to heal you should try them to see how you do. -
ARCHIVED Steel Cut Oats Replacement?
Coleslawcat replied to kathleenp's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was going to suggest the Bob's Red Mill gluten free steel cut oats as well. Have you tried gluten free oats to see how you handle them? I use the Bob's Red Mill gluten free oats all the time. -
ARCHIVED Going To Pheonix - Restaurant Suggestions?
Coleslawcat replied to Yup's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Joe's Real Barbeque in Gilbert is my favorite. Joe actually owns 3 restaurants and they are all great. Joe's Real Barbeque, Joe's Farm Grill, and Liberty Market. All 3 have allergen listings or gluten free menus. They aren't huge menus with bread substitutes, but they do tell you how to order safely. At the barbeque place you can eat all the meats, just not... -

As far as hot dog brands I think most are gluten free. I haven't found any that contain gluten. I know for sure Hebrew National, Ball Park and Oscar Mayer are gluten-free (though not positive about the cheese filled Oscar Mayer). The Jennie-O turkey dogs are gluten-free too. -

Boar's Head meat it gluten free. It is sold at Fry's and Bashas grocery stores. If you can make it to Tempe you should check out Picazzo's. They have a HUGE gluten free menu, everything from pizza, to pasta, to bread. They serve gluten free bread with appetizers if you order the gluten free version of the app. They don't even make regular pasta, all of... -
ARCHIVED Cake Baking - Texture Says It All!
Coleslawcat replied to kellynolan82's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have great luck with Better Batter flour blend. To make it a self-rising blend add 1 1/2 tsp of baking powder and 1/2 tsp of salt per cup of flour. -
ARCHIVED Corn Tortillas
Coleslawcat replied to WGibs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Even before I was gluten free I have always preferred the yellow ones. It's interesting how everyone has such different tastes. My grocery store always has about 5 times the amount of white ones on the shelf and I am bummed whenever they are out of yellow and I need to get the white ones. -
ARCHIVED Change In Alexia Frozen Potato And Sweet Potato Products
Coleslawcat replied to T.H.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I did a follow-up biopsy at 19 months gluten free just for that reason. I never cheat, but I do eat out somewhat often. I wanted to be sure that my lack of reaction equaled a lack of damage. My bloodwork came back clean. My biopsy, which had shown complete villous atrophy also came back 100% normal. It was such a relief to realize that I was not causing damage... -
ARCHIVED Why Do I Care If My Doctor Discounts My Experience
Coleslawcat replied to newgirl11's topic in Doctors
Were you already off the gluten when you did the bloodwork and biopsy? I know you said only a month off, but it could affect the results. You need to be consuming gluten to get accurate results on those tests. I know you must be very frustrated, but you know you feel better when you don't eat gluten, so no matter what the doctors tell you, you know what you... -
ARCHIVED Remission During Pregnancy?
Coleslawcat replied to AMom2010's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It sure didn't for me. My celiac caused me to have severe hyperemesis with my first 2 pregnancies. Once I was diagnosed and gluten free I had a normal 3rd pregnancy. There was gluten in my anti-nausea medication and everyone told me to eat bland food like crackers and toast and those things all made me much sicker. -
ARCHIVED Cupcakes
Coleslawcat replied to come dance with me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
That's actually a low price relative to custom bakers. It's only high in comparison to grocery store bakeries. If I wasn't a baker myself I wouldn't have any issue paying that price. Even for non gluten free cupcakes many bakers charge $1.50 a cupcake or more depending on the decorations. Although, it depends on your potential customers, if they will compare... -
ARCHIVED Old Spaghetti Factory/ Original Pancake House
Coleslawcat replied to RacerX35's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I've eaten at OSF several times. When I order gluten free they always ask if it is for an allergy or not. I tell them yes. I assume that means they take different precautions based on your answer. I have not gotten sick there. -
ARCHIVED Change In Alexia Frozen Potato And Sweet Potato Products
Coleslawcat replied to T.H.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ore-Ida has sweet potato fries that are labeled gluten free. I just discovered them recently at Sam's Club. I just finished off the bag tonight and haven't reacted to them. -
ARCHIVED Red Robin Treated Me Like A Princess.
Coleslawcat replied to Elfbaby's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
The RR around here always use yellow allergy alert baskets for gluten-free food too. I've only had positive experiences there. We go there pretty often. Usually I get my burger in the lettuce wrap but on occassion I have brought my own bun and assembled my burger at the table. -
ARCHIVED Costco Chicken
Coleslawcat replied to Nova Scotian Celiac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are you talking about the rotisserie chicken? I eat that frequently with no issues. My last pregnancy I craved it all the time and had it multiple times a week. -
ARCHIVED Udi's Hamburger Buns - Possible Recall
Coleslawcat replied to Kate79's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I keep them frozen. 60 seconds on half power in the microwave thaws them perfectly. -

I'm glad to read they're fine. I've had two in tha past week and they are wonderful! -
ARCHIVED Muffin Problems
Coleslawcat replied to sharps45's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Judy is correct. It's actually the same process for gluten free as for wheat based flours. It works very well. I bet the wild blueberries would be nice in muffins as well. -

ARCHIVED Experiences W/ Preeclampsia? (Pre And Post Dx?)
Coleslawcat replied to momof2peanutz's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had 2 pregnancies prior to my diagnosis. I had pre-eclampsia with my first, but it was a minor case compared to yours. My second I did not have pre-eclampsia. I had other complications that were actually much worse for me than the pre-e with my first pregnancy, but thankfully I did not have pre-e on top of that. I was then diagnosed which gave me the confidence... -
Please don't tell me this about cetaphil. It's the only cleanser that doesn't cause my skin to break out.

ARCHIVED How Often Do You Cheat?
Coleslawcat replied to steve-010's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I feel the same way. I have fairly minor outward reactions to gluten. I probably could cheat regularly without feeling all that bad. But I look at my 3 kids and imagine how selfish it would be to take years away from my time with them and it is very easy for me to pass on gluten. You need to decide for yourself if you are willing to have children with... -
ARCHIVED Develop Celiac Disease At 35
Coleslawcat replied to uruboy02's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I was 31 when I was diagnosed. I was largely asymptomatic, or so I thought. It wasn't until after I went gluten free that certain things I thought were normal (regular headaches, frequent random nausea, joint pain, fatigue) actually weren't normal and were caused by celiac. Looking back I'm nearly positive I've had this since I was 21 and had a severe case...
