  1. Yes, I get the knots and tiny jerks as well. My muscles will sometimes spasm tightly and it is difficult to do things like open my hand or release the arm or leg when it happens. My endocrinologist says the jerks, knots, and spasms happen initially, using magnesium each time. Then they do it so much that they deplete the available magnesium required by the...
  2. It took a while, but my hair loss got better after going gluten-free. Be sure to contact mfrs on all meds and personal care products.
  3. Do a search on several of the name brand meds, then do a search on the generic name to see which companies mfr them. Call those companies so that you have your ducks in a row. This is the way my docs often pursue them with us. Your pharmacist may be able to do like mine does and provide you with a list of mfrs for each generic and their phone numbers....
  4. Judy: I did not say that I don't think the celiac disease has anything to do with the bleeding, just that it does not seem to automatically go with it. There are many other gi problems that seem to occur more often in celiac disease patients. I am glad you have a doc who seems to be caring and thorough. Maybe she will figure out which ones impact you....
  5. Lots of return answers--read through for yours. Carriefaith: Yes, yes, and yes. I also have the eye and wrist pain as well. Some of the other things she may write off to just getting older. Not necessarily so. Check out the arthritis.org site and take a look at the tender point chart. It won't take you long to assess whether FMS might be the problem....
  6. Anyone have a good source for bulk amounts of xanthan gum? These small packages get outrageously expensive when you bake two or three times a week for the whole family. A week to ten day's worth of flour mix requires 1/3 cup. I had to pick some up at the store yesterday and it was $10.99 for an 8oz package!
  7. The magnesium is a life-saver. I have to have it by injection because of the malabsorption issues, but it is worth it. If your doc agrees to this, just be sure you mix xylocaine in it and push really slowly (a 70 unit shot should take about two minutes) then massage the area. I also use a medium level pain killer called Ultram (available gluten-free in generic...
  8. Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) also requires a trigger. For us it was a bout with Epstein Barr but it can be any significant stressor to the system. FMS is a form of arthritis that occurs in the muscles and connective tissue instead of the joints. It is diagnosed by symptoms and a tender point check. It is characterized by fatigue, foggiheadedness, and widespread...
  9. If I get glutened pretty badly and have a lot of diarrhea, I have the bleeding problem. Once things settle back down again, it goes away. Mine is always bright and not black so it is not coming from too far up the pipes. It is also a family problem, so I am not certain if it is celiac disease or some other issue.
  10. Not only did the Nexium help the nausea, that awful scraping feeling is gone as well.
  11. You are welcome. These things really came to light when I became soooo sick and others had to take over my responsibilities. The one good thing that came out of it was a new appreciation for the load I had carried around the house! I thought everyone was going to go hungry for the first few days because nobody even thought about supper until it was time to...
  12. I swiped several for my folder of gluten-free recipes. If you keep this up, we will all be buying your cookbook soon! Donna
  13. Those are some interesting dressing recipes. It is fun to see what folks consider dressing in different areas. Down south, we keep it simple. Cornbread dressing starts with a pone of cornbread (definition...a pan of cornbread made in a 10" cast iron skillet). Cornbread just has corn meal, not flour and absolutely no sugar. Break the cornbread into...
  14. Sounds good Richard. Thanks for the info.
  15. It is so frustrating when our kids are sick and we feel helpless. I agree with the dropping back on the diet. I might even go a little further for the first 24 hours or so and go back to clear liquids and let her system get totally settled down. You did not mention how long ago the cookie incident was. When glutened, you can have off and on symptoms for a...
  16. Fat and sluggish no matter what...sound like hypothyroid to me. Welcome to my world. Make sure you get the full range of tests and not just the basic ones. My docs had done several. It was not until I went to an endocrinologist who did the full range of tests and looked at the big picture that we found the problem. A couple of medications later and it stabilized...
  17. If your child is under age 18, Pepto Bismol should not be given due to the risk of Reyes Syndrome. Ask you doctor for another alternative suggestion. You may want to consider going back to a clear liquid diet for 24 hours, then move to bland, then gradually add back other foods. This is the standard initial treatment for diarrhea of any source. If your...
  18. I'm in an area of West Georgia that used to be rural but has recently been designated an exurb (who knew that word even existed until recently???) of Atlanta. Best I can tell, an exurb is a little further out than a suburb but is not quite rural anymore.
  19. I have the FMS as well. I know that there are currently some studies with that but not directly related to the celiac disease. Be sure to check your version of klonopin if it is generic. Not all are gluten-free. If the klonopin starts failing you, see if your doc will consider gabitril. It has helped a lot with the spasticity. I also take mag sulfate shots...

    ARCHIVED Grrrr....

I have an extended family member who tends not to consider the needs of others when he makes a decision. His decision to take us all to an Italian restaurant (which assured me they could feed me safely) wound up taking 8 months of my life and costing almost $20,000 in hospital and doctor bills. Needless to say, he gets glares from the entire family if he...
  21. I have come across it a time or two, but since I don't keep records of items that do contain gluten I cannot remember what they were.
  22. I contacted Lowry's by phone recently about another of their products. They were very helpful and clearly stated that their products would state any ingredients that would contain gluten.
  23. I would have put this one in the maybe category. From everything I have read, it is the source of the caramel coloring that makes the determination. I have also found that to be true when I have contacted manufacturers.
  24. There was an episode of the show "Doc" that dealt with this. My family had that teenager diagnosed long before the characters figured out that she had celiac instead of an eating disorder. The girl just cried and kept trying to tell everyone that she was sick physically.
  25. Also, if you use a hot tub regularly, be sure to tell your doctor as this can sometimes trigger infections that react like bronchitis.
