  1. Having the kids tested is my next step. My sister is also getting tested because she has symptoms bad, and other autoimmune disorders that could be linked. My 5 year old gets violently ill if he eats anything whole wheat, not so much with white flour, but I think he might have symptoms such as asthma and allergies that are not gastro. He's a great kid...
  2. The deal with the "just because it's wheat free doesn't mean it's gluten free" statement means that it can have barley, rye or derivatives like barley malt extract in it. Also there are wheat free breads made of spelt, rye, barley that will have gluten but not wheat. Well spelt is a cousin of wheat, but the breads will say wheat free on them sometimes. ...
  3. Betty Crocker has gluten free brownies, yellow cake and chocolate chip cookie mix. We made the brownies and they taste exactly like the real thing. My husband and son could not tell the difference at all and neither could I. My local Stater Bros. carries all of them. I live in So Cal, so I'm not sure if they carry them everywhere. I like Udi's bread. It...
  4. I'm newly diagnosed and only gluten free for 7 days, so during my healing process I'm avoiding dairy and soy too. Here's my opinion. I think dairy is in general just tough to digest. I mean it's milk for baby cows and all. I would guess that either some of the dairy you are eating has gluten in it, you are sensitive to dairy, or both. I've heard the argument...
  5. Crazy me. I just took the stuff straight. No wonder! I have been juicing off and on for years with similar stuff to what you are making a shake out of. I find it helps me a lot, and now that I'm diagnosed celiac and gluten free it's been really helping with the withdrawals. I didn't juice until yesterday because it just didn't appeal to me. I'm only...
  6. Which coconut oil are you taking? I tried it a long time ago because I have hypothyroid and trouble losing weight, which it's supposed to help. I took one spoonful and it made me throw up so violently I thought my guts would explode. Then the Whole Foods person said the one I bought is not good and to try another one but after that I was pretty much done...
  7. I'm feeling much better today, day 7 gluten free. I homeschool my 5 year old and I have a 2 year old. I was able to teach and do all sorts of fun things all morning until lunch with no fatigue and no tiredness or need to take breaks. Usually I take a lot of breaks and I feel like garbage. The dizziness was all gone until now. Most of my GI symptoms are gone...
  8. I was thinking the potatoes too. They put pancake batter in omelettes at IHOP, so it's possible they did something like that to fluff up the eggs. Maybe next time you can call ahead and ask them about what you can eat there, or even that day ask the manager. I'm sure they will accomodate you and help you try to figure out what will be safe for you. Of...
  9. Jenn, where are you? I hope you come back to this discussion for some good advice. This has to be my safe haven right now. I am a wreck with all of this being new to me, and then I'm reading that many of those who have been gluten free a long time are suffering from so many other food issues and the fallout from undiagnosed celiac all these years. This...
  10. I'm sorry that you are suffering like this. Are you using regular doctors or natural doctors for all of this testing and treatment? I know that the MD's make plenty of mistakes, but I've had some bad experiences with the naturopaths and whatnot too, and some of the stuff that's "natural" can really make you sicker. Also some of the testing methods that they...
  11. I'm glad you apologized because your post was not tough love. There was nothing loving about it. It was mean and totally rude and unnecessary. Tough love is only appropriate when it's somebody you know and LOVE and usually when people call something tough love it's just an excuse for rude behavior. We are all suffering here and we come here for support. Who...
  12. Since I went completely gluten free 6 days ago I have gone from being a pretty intelligent person to living up to my blonde hair's reputation. I am so DITZY. I feel like I'm tipsy or something my brain is so foggy. I'm still having dizzy spells and tiredness too, but my GI issues have improved as of last night.
  13. Everything I've read has said caramel color is okay. I think that is a celiac urban myth isn't it?
  14. Do I even need to see a GI doc at this point? My blood tests were positive for celiac disease. I am on the gluten free diet. I won't submit to a biopsy just to confirm what we already know. I'm leery of GI docs after being misdiagnosed years ago with IBS by two of them and I'm really not sure what it will accomplish. Is there some reason to see the GI...
  15. What supplements do you take to make up for the vitamin deficiencies from before you went gluten free? Do you get vitamin injections too? When you are newly diagnosed like me, can the damaged intestines even absorb a multivitamin, or do we need to take chewables and sublinguals or liquid supplements? My doctor is really open to doing whatever I need...
  16. I am so sorry you are so sick. Have you tried a gluten free diet yet or are you just starting? I got diagnosed a week ago and I've been feeling bad all week. People have told me it's gluten withdrawals. From what I've read lots of people came up negative on the tests but when they did the diet 100% and got ALL gluten out of their diet they felt better within...
  17. Just like celiac testing, allergy testing can be so innacurate, especially with foods. My mother in law is an allergist and her opinion is that you should go by your symptoms. If you are positive and symptom free, then eat it sparingly. If you come up negative but know a food gives you symptoms consider yourself allergic and avoid it. She also says the...
  18. Here is an article about some of the dangers of chelation therapy. Open Original Shared Link I cut and pasted this from the article. Hair analysis is not recommended for biomonitoring, because false elevations may occur if the specimen is not carefully collected. Provocative chelation tests for mercury have not been scientifically validated and are...
  19. Thanks so much for explaining that to me. I've only been diagnosed for 4 days so I have a lot to learn!!! I felt like it was such a dumb question but I had to ask. I haven't gone out to eat all week but I will tomorrow. It's a restaurant we frequent a lot so they know me and hopefully they will be careful with my food. I will have to train them because...
  20. Am I being a naive newbie in thinking that restaurants can't be that bad? I just got diagnosed as I said earlier but I'm thinking of restaurants around me and I can't think of any, except chinese, that I won't go to for fear of being glutened. I can order a burger or grilled chicken breast sandwich without the bun. A baked potato and salad if I'm really...
  21. I wouldn't try to mimic what they are eating. I would just bring my own food and eat it. Have you given your inlaws some ideas for cooking too? It's so easy to make some sort of meat, some veggies and rice for dinner. If you are only there 3 days, there is no reason they can't do steak one night, chicken the next, and fish or whatever. Then bring lunch items...
  22. So sorry these things happened!! It's totally appropriate to tell the friends that you can't bring chicken nuggets. People don't understand the finer points of this complicated disease. Newbies like me are doing research projects just to learn about it ourselves. Gentle reminders are appropriate and necessary for your health. I would have said "I would...
  23. I was reading the thread about getting glutened and wondering are all of us sensitive enough that we will get sick if somebody has crumbs on their hand and then touches something we eat and things like that? I just got diagnosed and have only been on the diet for a few days. I have been homebound because of dizzy spells and constant need to go to the bathroom...
  24. I thought I replied to this but now I don't see my post. Maybe I forgot to hit the add reply button. We live close to Disney and go there a lot. Disneyland is accomodating and helpful with EVERYTHING. I just love it there. I just got my diagnosis but years ago I had to go wheat free for nursing my son because of his allergies. Too bad they didn't diagnose...
  25. I've been on other message boards before and this is by far the nicest group of internet people I've ever met. Thanks so much for all of your kinds words and words of wisdom. And the italian food ideas!!!!! I am so grateful that it's a diagnosis with a dietary "medicine" instead of tons of drugs or worse, nothing. It's all new because I got my diagnosis...
