EM! Tomorrow he is supposed to be in Montreal. The Ottawa event is Wednesday, at 7:30. The Open Original Shared Link describes itself as a pub, but food is served as well, so the license is probably a dining room or dining lounge. Both of those categories allow for persons of all ages to enter. They have a separate function room, which may be where the event... -
ARCHIVED For Those W/celiac And Diabetes?
psawyer replied to JustAGirl79's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My type 1 diabetes diagnosis came in March of 1986. The diagnosis of celiac disease came in the summer of 2000, fourteen years later. My celiac symptoms became overt in 1995, but I had had digestive issues for decades. I am the only diagnosed celiac in the family. I strongly suspect that my father also has celiac disease, but he says he doesn't and so... -

Jess needs grain-free kitty food. Here a few ideas for dry food: Wellness CORE (50% protein from turkey, chicken, whitefish and salmon); Merrick BG (Before Grain) (three single-protein formulas: chicken, tuna & salmon ~36% protein); Taste of the Wild (42% protein from chicken, venison, salmon and ocean fish). -

ARCHIVED Glutened Friday Nite, Symptoms Last Longer Than 12 Hours?

My onset time is six to twelve hours after exposure. Severe symptoms last a couple of days; milder ones last about a week. -

Again? Why not, after a few times, what is another? When we rescued a cat in 1995, we dubbed him Max. We later learned that he had been known as Blackie. He passed away in 1998. Thomas, whom we rescued in 1998, had been known as "Roadie" by his previous owner (short for Road Kill). Thomas passed away from a stroke last year. Becky, our gray... -

Well, the storm front has passed, and is now moving in Emily's direction. It seems to have taken my energy with it. I'm ready to call it an early night. Somebody bought a fiddle on eBay for $24.99 (plus shipping). Wuz it our Jess? I have a meeting with my pillow in about 5 minutes... -

The temperature has risen slightly, the sky has darkened and a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued. The wind has picked up, and I hear thunder in the west. We have taken cover indoors. -

ARCHIVED I Never Thought I Could Have This... Could I?
psawyer replied to lalalucy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, your described symptoms are consistent with celiac disease, but there could be other causes. Any doctor can order the blood tests to screen for celiac, but an endoscopy to look for damage to the villi would be done by a gastrointestinal (GI) specialist. The key blood tests are tTG-IgA and total serum IgA. If the former is positive and the latter... -

ARCHIVED Drinking With Celiac Disease

Bananas are definitely gluten-free. I think what Momma Goose meant was in reference to prepared cocktail mixes, some of which contain gluten. -
ARCHIVED Drinking With Celiac Disease
psawyer replied to LandonL's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Distilled spirits are generally accepted as gluten-free, although a small percentage of celiacs react to gluten-grain based distillates. Vodkas vary in source. Some are potato. Some are derived from grains that contain gluten. Smirnoff is made from corn. Rum is not grain-based, and is thus always gluten-free. Some members have questioned it, but it is... -

ARCHIVED Urban Gluten Legends
psawyer replied to thleensd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It would be good to have a place where you can distinguish urban myth from reality regarding gluten. It is certainly not as easy to use as snopes, but I like to believe that this site is close as you can get. Because of the large number of members, and the number of post that they have made, most of the gluten myths have been discussed here at one time... -
ARCHIVED Food Labeling
psawyer replied to Sarah J.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In the USA, this is still under discussion, but it looks like <20 ppm is where it will end up. The unfortunate thing for consumers is that, as long as this is unclear, many manufacturers are reluctant to put "gluten-free" on a label--some who used to have it have removed it. In the meantime, there is no regulatory definition of "gluten-free" in the USA... -
ARCHIVED Wishbone Salad Dressings
psawyer replied to linsmad's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wish-bone is a Unilever brand, and they have a clear gluten disclosure policy. If you don't see wheat, rye, barley or oats listed by name, they aren't there. That does not mean all their dressings are gluten-free, you have to look at the label on the one you are interested it. But if there is a gluten source, the label will clearly disclose it. -
ARCHIVED Should I Avoid Gluten While Avoiding Msg?
psawyer replied to Remenyke's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
MSG is not gluten. Gluten is not MSG. They are distinct, although it is possible for a single ingredient to contain both. Avoiding one does not mean avoiding the other, although you may choose to avoid both. The list that you linked to is, in my opinion, full of half-truths, falsehoods, and outdated information. Try these links for useful information...
