ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm now on page 269. The drink in the current avatar is Beefeater gin with a bit of dry vermouth, shaken with ice and then strained. St Remy is a brandy that I occasionally sip neat, as I did last night. Somehow, alcohol seems to make it easier to understand parts of this thread. -
ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Finding the first suggestion of a parade (by Emily, as it turns out) took me back 131 pages, to post number 3021 on page 202. And that was only a month ago. I have been reading off and on all day, and am now on page 244. I started on page 280 yesterday, so I still have a lot to catch up on. You people here are, well, I'm not quite sure of the right word for... -
ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Black Opal Chardonnay (from Australia) was a start. After about 20 pages, I needed something a bit stronger. A snort of St Remy kept me going. I went back fifty-three pages to page 280, and was surprised that I had only gone back 17 days to October 24. Geez, this thread is active. I read from there to the current post, but I didn't find the parade answer... -
ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Emily says I need to go back about 50 pages and start reading to find out what the parade is about. Okay, I will, but not tonight. I should get to it in the next couple of days. Tomorrow is a fairly rare Saturday that I am not working, so I'll have some time to read. A yeti, you say. This is going to be interesting, I think. -
ARCHIVED Healed And Never Get Sick
psawyer replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have been gluten-free for over seven years. The evidence would seem to show that my intestine has healed, but there are ongoing issues stemming from years of malnutrition. My bones are those of someone 30 years older than I am, and are showing almost no sign of strengthening. My current family doctor says that regrowth is unlikely at my age (53), and the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Stuffed Turkey. Is It Ok To Eat?
psawyer replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would not consider any part of the turkey to be safe. If, as is often the case, the juices from the cooking bird are used to baste it, then the gluten can make the trip to any part of the bird. It is not difficult to make gluten-free stuffing by substituting corn or rice bread, and possibly adding a bit more liquid to the recipe. Search the board for... -
ARCHIVED Argh!
psawyer replied to L.A.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't see anything in the list that suggests possible gluten content. -

Okay, the cat man speaks about, well, cats. We have six in all. Four live at home with us, and two live at our store (we sell pet food and supplies). In order of seniority, they are: Oliver, a male, is an 11-year old, huge long haired orange tabby, 21 pounds and 30 inches long. Lives at home. Thomas, a male, is 10 years old, white short-hair, lives... -
ARCHIVED Personal Statement
psawyer replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Well, I don't know what it is that makes it work for this user [me], but I created a new identity and tried to create a personal statement. It behaves just as you described. The return to the main forum pages is normal; but the new information is not saved. I will send Scott a note with what information I can provide. There is certainly something broken here... -
ARCHIVED Personal Statement
psawyer replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Well, I'm a computer person with decades of experience, but Lisa's perhaps overstating things a bit. The personal statement is something that is visible to anyone who views your profile. It is public, in the sense that your profile can be viewed by a guest. You can use it to communicate whatever you want, as long as it fits in the 300-character limit... -
ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original

What are the newlyweds doing? Well, it has been over 26 years since we were newlyweds, and I remember what we were doing, but nobody was taking any pictures of it. -
ARCHIVED 'normal' Foods That Are Gluten Free
psawyer replied to thepeach80's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You need to make some pancakes, you say. We love the Glutino pancake mix. It makes a light fluffy pancake that does not in any way remind me of chewing on cardboard. Glutino products are all gluten-free. As others have posted, there are a lot of companies that voluntarily disclose any ingredient derived from a gluten grain. With these brands, you... -

ARCHIVED How Long Does It Take For Symptoms To Develop After Eating Gluten?
psawyer replied to MJS's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Reaction time varies from person to person. For some people it is almost instantaneous. In my case it takes 3 to 6 hours. Some of us take longer than that. -

Heinz Organic, if I recall correctly, does. -
ARCHIVED New Food Reactions
psawyer replied to JustMe75's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Problems with milk, specifically lactose intolerance, are very common in newly diagnosed celiacs. The enzyme (lactase) that digests milk sugar (lactose) is secreted by the villi in the small intestine--the very tissue that the autoimmune reaction in celiac disease targets. Most new celiacs find it necessary to avoid lactose for at least three months to allow... -
ARCHIVED Possible Bug In Forum Software
psawyer replied to oldsalt19's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
This is indeed deliberate. Abbreviations make posts harder to understand for people unfamiliar with terms, and confound search engines. So, these two common short forms are automatically expanded whenever they are used. There are a number of other substitutions which take place. Certain words which may be offensive are changed. A common 4-letter word beginning... -
ARCHIVED Finger Lakes New York
psawyer replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
The Finger Lakes is a big region. Until a year ago, my parents had a property south of Canadaigua. The Wegmans store in town was always a great source. This part of NY is Wegmans' home turf, so there should be a store not too far from wherever you are. -
ARCHIVED Dry Spices
psawyer replied to Alaska's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Pure spices are safe. McCormicks will clearly label any gluten content. The things to watch carefully are mixed ones, like paprika and curry. These mixtures may contain ingredients other than just spices. -
ARCHIVED Want To Make A Casein/gluten Free Nacho Cheese Sauce
psawyer replied to Sarah8793's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Although you posted several hours ago, your post had not been pinned, so it was at the bottom of the page. Usually things get pinned much sooner. I'm pinning this as I post. -
ARCHIVED Mead Honey Wine?
psawyer replied to powerbraid's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I drink wine without concern. Yeast is safe with the exception of brewer's yeast. Brewer's yeast is unsafe because it is the spent yeast used in making beer, and has been thoroughly contaminated in the malting process. -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Please Explain Cross Contamination To Me?
psawyer replied to Aligray's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Some fries are coated, and at least as many are not. Like so many things in the gluten-free life, you need to ask: (1) are they coated/battered, or are they just plain potatoes; and (2) is the fryer used for anything else (and if so, what). -
ARCHIVED Is There A Difference Between Tapioca Flour And Tapioca Starch?
psawyer replied to sharps45's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes, in the specific case of tapioca, the flour and starch are the same thing. -

ARCHIVED gluten-free Yorkshire Pudding
psawyer replied to natalie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We have used this recipe for years, and are very satisfied with the results: Yorkshire Pudding (Gluten-Free) Persons served: 2 4 chick pea flour 50g 100g rice flour 50g 100g eggs 1 2 milk 200ml 400ml salt pinch...
