ARCHIVED Hidden Gluten In Processed Food?how Do I Spot It, Or Is It A Myth?
psawyer replied to ldslara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Dextrose is pure sugar and is gluten-free. Other gluten-free sweeteners include aspartame, brown sugar, corn syrup, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltitol, maltose, mannitol, saccharin, sorbitol, stevia, sucralose, sucrose, and xylitol. -
ARCHIVED Publix Beef
psawyer replied to Wheresthebeef's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Exactly. Precautions can be taken to minimize risk, but no guarantee is possible. Some products guarantee less than x parts per million, because they test for that level, but no test can prove zero content. Oh, and if you grow it yourself, grow it in a pressure-sealed greenhouse to be sure that airborne flour from your neighbor's baking doesn't land... -
The maltodextrin would not be an issue. In the US, if it were wheat derived, the ingredient list would have to disclose wheat. Since it did not, you can safely assume that it was corn based. I have never heard of a verified case of wheat-derived maltodextrin in North America. In any event, it is so highly processed that there is no detectable gluten in the...

ARCHIVED Publix Beef
psawyer replied to Wheresthebeef's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We buy meat, including ground meat, at our usual supermarket. We take it out of the package and use it without further ado. Cross contamination can happen at any point on the supply line, not just at the final point of packaging. Any claim to guarantee that cc can not occur is at best misinformed. No such guarantee can ever be honestly made. -

The usual legal disclaimer that wheat is present in the facility and thus they can not guarantee that cross-contamination is impossible. It would not deter me from eating the meats. -
ARCHIVED Where Can I Find Gluten Free Rice Krispies?
psawyer replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
These are not treats, they are a gluten-free version of the Rice Krispies cereal, made from brown rice and without the added barley. Here, they are in the regular cereal section of most grocery stores. I enjoy them, but your taste may vary. -
Would you please tell us who said that, and provide references for the testing. In the US, caramel color is made from corn. Where did the gluten come from?

Casein is the protein in cow's milk. Lactose is the sugar in it. Most people with celiac disease have issues with lactose until their intestines heal enough that the villi can again produce the enzyme lactase, which is needed to digest lactose. They can then reintroduce dairy. If your issue is with casein, then a completely dairy-free diet is needed...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Cat Food
psawyer replied to Em314's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Grain-free diets for cats and dogs are a trend of late. Numerous options exist in multiple brands. We use Natural Balance and Now! cat kibble. Of the two, Natural Balance is more widely distributed. -
ARCHIVED Hidden Gluten In Processed Food?how Do I Spot It, Or Is It A Myth?
psawyer replied to ldslara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Neither the US nor Canada require "may contain" warnings. Canada has a policy that says they may be used only if, despite best efforts to clean/separate, a real risk still exists. Contamination can happen at any point on the supply chain, not just at the final production facility. In the case of oats, this happens at every step of the way, because oats... -

ARCHIVED Pork Tenderloin & Pot Roast - Are Meats Gluten-Free?
psawyer replied to CaliSparrow's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you are in the US, USDA regulations require any grain product in meat be disclosed. -
ARCHIVED Metro "selections" Red Maraschino Cherries?
psawyer replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Colours are gluten-free. While "natural flavours" can theoretically contain gluten, they very rarely actually do. The most likely source would be barley malt, and that is a relatively expensive ingredient, so it is usually explicitly declared. I would use the product without concern. They were in eastern Mexico, which would put them in today's Central time zone, one hour behind me. So maybe I have to wait one hour and 41 minutes before I know for sure. If I survive, I will post. If you don't see a post, kiss your ass goodbye. -

According to the Mayan calendar, the world will end tomorrow. Tomorrow is less than an hour away. Should I pig out on gluten loaded stuff I miss? Oh, wait, there is no gluten in the house and most grocery stores here are closed (there is one open 24 hours). -
ARCHIVED Should We Avoid Hot Coffee Cups?
psawyer replied to Firuze's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We have all heard these stories about gluten in envelope and stamp glue. But has anyone ever actually found a verified case? In over twelve years, I have not seen one. I haven't licked a stamp in many years, but that is because in Canada they use pressure-sensitive adhesive--you peel and press. -

ARCHIVED Cream Of Rice
psawyer replied to Eddierickles's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
At present, there is no regulation in the US to govern the use of the term "gluten-free." Canada has a regulation, but it does not require testing. The situation described in the message meets Canadian regulations for gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Boston Pizza Is Now gluten-free!
psawyer replied to Yup's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I have not heard of anyone having cc issues at Boston Pizza. But apparently the pizza wasn't gluten-free enough for government inspectors. Open Original Shared Link I eat the pizza from time to time, and have not had a problem. -

They still had them when I was there a couple of weeks ago. But they have stopped using the term gluten-free to describe them due to cross contamination concerns. The crusts are mad by Kinnikinnik--the same ones that you can buy. -
ARCHIVED 2 Different Answers About A Medication And Gluten
psawyer replied to KnightRobby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
"we can not guarantee" usually means that, while the ingredient is not intentionally present, no testing is done for possible contamination on materials purchased from third parties. That is the reality. -
