  1. The Canadian Celiac Association lists soybeans as safe/allowed on the gluten-free diet. I have more trust in them than I do in about.com.
  2. Soy is a common allergen, listed in the FALCPA top eight. Some folks with celiac disease react badly to it, although soy intolerance is independent of celiac disease. Personally, I have no troubles with it. But you will need to figure out for yourself if you have a soy issue in addition to celiac disease.
  3. Swanson broths are made by Campbell's. They will clearly disclose any gluten source in the ingredient list.
  4. This gab/chat fourm is described on the index page thus: General Chat Unrelated to Celiac Disease - Discuss most things here EXCEPT Celiac Disease / Gluten-Free Diet. Keep it light and avoid controversial topics like global warming, gay marriage, gun control, euthanasia, speed limits on the Autobahn, prisoner torture, etc. This discussion has strayed...
  5. I'm here, after being distracted for a while. It has been a busy and stressful couple of weeks. Some of you know from Facebook, and my moderator colleagues know as well. My father-in-law was taken to hospital December 4 because he was suddenly vomiting blood. His health had been in a slow, steady decline for a while. On Saturday evening, he passed away...
  6. The hard part is over. The crowning is painless. Been there more than once. A crown sculptured to match the drilled tooth is made and attached to the tooth using a strong adhesive. No drilling. No pain.
  7. In many jurisdictions, health code ties the hands of the restaurant. They may have the decision made for them. Where I live, it is legal to bring something into the facility. They can not take it into the kitchen to warm it, nor can they use your bread to make a sandwich. They can bring the sandwich filling to you, and if you have your own wrapper, you...
  8. Caramel color is one of those celiac urban myths that just won't go away. Here is Shelley Case's take on it, from Gluten-Free Diet A Comprehensive Resource Guide: [Emphasis in original]
  9. Gluten-Free Bisquick is not available in Canada, and General Mills Canada has no idea when, or if, it will be. So on Saturday, we took a trip across the Niagara River to shop in western New York. We bought three boxes. Today, Jacquie goes to bake, and looks closely at the box: How ironic! Distributed by General Mills Sales Inc, USA. Product...
  10. It's December 11th! Eighty-one years ago on this date, Canada ceased to be a part of the British Empire, and became an independent country ruled by a democratically elected Parliament comprised of Canadians. Let's celebrate!! Most Canadians are too distracted by the event of July 1, 1867, to realize that the truly important date was December...
  11. I will believe it when it actually happens. In 2004, FALCPA said, in part: SEC. 206. GLUTEN LABELING. Deadlines. Regulations. 21 USC 343 note. Not later than 2 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, in consultation with appropriate experts and stakeholders, shall issue a proposed rule to define, and...
  12. Just now: The server at www.facebook.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed.
  13. USA Today. Not the newspaper. A day trip to Niagara Falls NY. We needed gluten-free Bisquick for a holiday recipe that WardGirl wants to make. It is not available in Canada. We also grabbed Corn Chex and Bob's Red Mill gluten-free rolled oats. Picked up some stuff at Best Buy, too, that they don't have in Canada. We shopped at Wegmans for the first...
  14. This is an old thread. Posting a link address with highlighting makes it very difficult for anyone wanting to access the referenced material. Here is a clickable version: Open Original Shared Link
  15. The genetic test, while interesting, can not diagnose celiac disease. Many people carry one or more of the genetic markers usually associated with celiac disease, but never actually develop the disease. Most doctors believe that an negative result on the gene test rules out celiac disease, but there is evidence that there may be other genes. Doctors in Europe...
  16. Biologically, "gluten" refers to the prolamine protein in a grain--any grain. Grains are members of the grass family, Poaceae, also known as Gramineae. This family includes the grains we refer to as gluten: wheat, barley and rye. Oats are also in this family. Quinoa is not a true grain. It is a member of the Amaranthaceae family. As such, it does not contain...
  17. In addition to the garage event, I have been working on a replacement for my slowly dying desk computer, which is over nine years old and struggles. The optical drive no longer works, and there has been no sound for many months. This post is coming from a new machine which UPS delivered today. I am just getting it going. I updated IE to IE8 so I could download...
  18. Well, we have been doing some out-of-season spring cleaning around here. It is our turn to host the family Christmas dinner for my family. We are slowly sorting through stuff, some of which is related to our now-closed retail business. We filled the garage with gems and detritus prior to closing the store in late June. July was a rest period, and from early...
  19. Um, you blew--oh, oh--no, NO, not going there.
  20. This topic is almost four years old, so I'm unsure why we are reviving it now. "Accent" is just monosodium glutamate. Why does it have a trade name? Answer: So you will associate a specific brand in your mind, and purchase that brand rather than a generic form of the same substance. Marketing 101.
  21. It certainly isn't something I worry about. I have never seen a documented case of gluten in wax, just wild speculation. Maybe the stores in your area don't disclose anything because there isn't anything to disclose in the first place.
  22. It's the first of the month, but Nikki is still missing.
  23. A mild 6C today, but wet precip expected for for tomorrow, and the day after that. The sun shone for a while this morning making Caramel a happy cat.
  24. Take a deep breath. Do you chew your nails? If not, don't worry. Gluten in products that you do not eat, and which can not reasonably be expected to be ingested, should not be a concern.
