ARCHIVED Migraines
psawyer replied to jenarella's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
To return to the original topic, I used to get ugly migraines, but since going gluten-free twelve years ago I have not had one. In North America, paracetamol is called acetaminophen generically, and is also sold under the brand name Tylenol. -
ARCHIVED Migraines
psawyer replied to jenarella's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is true. The letters gf are replaced by gluten-free, and the letters cd are replaced by celiac disease. You can force them to appear as intended--I just did --by putting something invisible between them: gf -
ARCHIVED Can Gluten Molecules Permeate Egg Shells?
psawyer replied to kwylee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Agreed. Water can certainly get through them, but water (H2O) is a small molecule, with an atomic mass of 10. Prolamine molecules (gluten) have atomic masses in excess of 1,000. They are long chains of amino acids--which are themselves large. -
The trait is genetic, but only a minority of those carrying the gene actually develop celiac disease. So, yes, there is a possibility that their child will have the genes and may be susceptible to developing celiac disease at some point in their life. Your brother tests negative today, but he could have the gene and have celiac disease triggered next week...

ARCHIVED Is It Safe To Vacuum Up Gluten?
psawyer replied to 123glldd's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Maybe. Maybe not. It would vary from vacuum to vacuum, based on how good the filter is. If you are worried, I would consider using a face mask during the actual process. Then stay out of the room for an hour while any remaining dust settles. But, honestly, it is not something that worries me. -

ARCHIVED So Many Questions ,
psawyer replied to cloudsxxx's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Weight loss and diarrhea are common symptoms, but are not universal. Some gain weight. Some experience constipation. -
ARCHIVED Natural Occuring Glutamates
psawyer replied to Lister's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This topic is more than six years old. Information may be out of date, and the original participants may be long gone from here. Glutamates were not gluten then, are still are not. -
ARCHIVED Indulge Me; What Was It Like To Be Gluten Free Back Then?
psawyer replied to catsmeow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been gluten-free for just over twelve years. There have been major advances in label rules in that time, and many more specialty products have been introduced. In 2000, there was no gluten-free beer at all. Gluten-free baked products could only be obtained in specialty stores. Today, they are in mainstream supermarkets. There are so many more... -
ARCHIVED Dried Fruit Contaminated With Gluten?
psawyer replied to nama shivaya's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gluten has adhesive properties. That is why it gives the great texture it does to baked goods. Wheat flour gets sticky when wet. I'm not saying somebody wouldn't try flour as an anti-stick agent, but it wouldn't work--so they would not continue to use it. The most common anti-stick agent is cellulose, which is from tree pulp and is gluten-free. In... -

ARCHIVED Grass Fed Or Grain Fed-How Do You Find Out?
psawyer replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So, is there a lot of fur on your bear feet? Does the bear regret that you have them? Seriously, though, that would unnerve me. -
It is widely accepted that distillation renders the distillate gluten-free because the protein molecule (the gluten) is much too large to vaporize, even under heat. I don't understand how making beer could vaporize what a still can not. There are some who react to distilled spirits, but my own thought on that is that they are reacting to fragments of the...

ARCHIVED Endoscopy - Saw Patchy Damage
psawyer replied to Mom2-2girls's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree. Visible damage means a very high likelihood for positive. The patchy part is a chance for error, but one would hope that samples were taken where the damage was visible. -
ARCHIVED Coffee
psawyer replied to Mrs. C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The coffee bean is gluten-free without any doubt. While it is possible that the flavor contains hidden gluten as malted barley, it is not likely. Barley malt is expensive, so rather than hide it, manufacturers will usually highlight it. I don't like flavor in my coffee, so this is not so much of a concern for me. But I do drink plain coffee all the time... -
ARCHIVED Quinoa? Seriously? What's The Deal?
psawyer replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, it isn't. Grains are members of the Poaceae family. Quinoa belongs to a different family: Amaranthaceae. -
There is a lot of stuff in there; most of it is debatable. I do fully agree with this part: Yes, but you can be totally gluten-free without ever buying a substitute gluten-free product. Most gluten-free foods, like fresh meat and produce, do not cost any more just because you are no longer eating gluten.

ARCHIVED Celiac: The Trendy Disease For Rich White People - Science 2.0
psawyer replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I agree with this: If you are eating a poor diet, with lots of donuts, pizza, bagels, and so forth, and switch to a diet with lots of gluten-free cookies, donuts, bagels and pizza, well, you now have an unhealthy gluten-free diet. In fact, in this case, it may be less healthy since many of the gluten-free substitutes have more fat and calories than the... -
ARCHIVED Dang! Tomato Paste
psawyer replied to gatita's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tiffany, thank you for the photos. The appearance is very similar, even though the products are very different. Bah! "Tomato Paste product with Italian Herbs is in small print. -
ARCHIVED Dang! Tomato Paste
psawyer replied to gatita's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So, to be clear, we are not actually talking about something labeled simply as "Tomato Paste." We are talking about a certain brand of tomato product described as "Italian Paste with Italian Herbs. That doesn't sound the same to me. I expect "Tomato Paste" to not have herbs and other things added. To me, this is a quite different product--which happens... -
ARCHIVED How Long After Ingesting Do Symptoms Appear?
psawyer replied to lisaloo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This thread is more that two and a half years old. I'm not sure why it is being resuscitated. As a reminder, the original topic was, "How Long After Ingesting Do Symptoms Appear?" If you have a few minutes to spend, you could watch this. It is off topic. Vikki Peterson has lots of video out there. This one has a couple of sentences that are related... -
ARCHIVED Friend With Possible Celiac?
psawyer replied to techyie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I certainly can. For more than ten years, my wife and I ran a retail store selling pet food and supplies. Every dog that came in was offered a biscuit. The first ingredient listed was wheat flour. I would touch these many times per day--and always wash my hands afterwards. The gluten molecule is a long complex protein which can not be absorbed through skin... -
Some cats do, and others not so much. Caramel, our almost-13 former store cat, very rarely purred while on duty at the store. Now that she is living at home with us, she is purring a lot. Give her time, she may start.
