  1. What a bummer...baking sure is a huge experiment, isn't it! Does Better Batter have xanthan gum in it?
  2. I drink black coffee without any problem. That would be far harder for me to give up than gluten.
  3. A tTG of under 3 would be negative according to my lab report from Quest. You can make lots of good foods that gluten-free. Just check the recipe forum for some ideas. And a lot of foods I'm eating now are things I've basically eaten all my life...you can keep it simple to begin with. You'll get the hang of it in no time and I bet you're already making...
  4. OK, then I know your lab report is not complete. Quest also did mine. You should have a number for the tTG for one thing and complete reference ranges for all the others, too. For example, my tTG was >100 with >8 being positive. I did not have a DNA test so have no clue what my genes are nor are gene tests diagnostic. Whatever they are, my adult...
  5. I just don't know what to tell you except that I would think your husband would like to have his wife back and your children would like to have their mother back. You deserve to feel better! It is doubly difficult without family support so I am hoping you can find a way. I'd certainly start cooking a lot of naturally gluten-free meals and take it upon...
  6. Congratulations!!!
  7. I agree with Ravenwoodglass. You really should give the diet a good strict try unless you are going to have an endoscopy/biopsy. It will not interfere with any other tests your Dr. may run to try and narrow down your problems. You might just get your answer going gluten-free. I'm not aware of any specific tests for gluten intolerance but even if there...
  8. How about veggies?

    ARCHIVED I'm Scared

Poppi, you are still so new to this but it will get so much easier as time goes on. It can be very overwhelming at first...just buying groceries was overwhelming to me at first but now it's pretty easy. It sounds like you had a very successful day yesterday. Nothing beats feeling well!
  10. WhenDee, according to the Celiac Disease Center at the Univ. of Chicago, it's 1 in 22 for first-degree relatives and 1 in 39 for second-degree relatives. My daughter also has celiac. Too bad about your SIL...there's not much you can do if she prefers to continue eating those foods which make her ill. At least you tried! ETA: Open Original Shared...
  11. I think your boyfriend is a winner, too!!! How thoughtful of him to get you such a nice gift.
  12. Congrats! Lucky you. Yes, the Zo is a good bread machine. I debated buying one a year ago but decided on a KitchenAid mixer instead (don't have room for both). Hopefully someone will give you some links for making gluten-free bread. I have a cookbook called Gluten-Free Baking Classics by Annalise Roberts, which I turn to frequently and am pleased with...
  13. As far as I know it is although I can't find info on line. I've used it.
  14. Wow, what an interesting thought! I wonder what would happen if you find a gluten-free cake recipe on line, mix the dry ingredients and then follow a recipe in the book. I'd do it with a single cake only to test it. We know how cheap the dry ingredients are and how expensive the mixes are plus we still have to add a lot to them. I know for bread recipes...
  15. I also had a liver scan six months after the abdominal CT scan and I had a different contrast (can't remember the name) but it was gluten-free. And yes, they did add Crystal Light to it. Yuck! I hate Crystal Light on a good day. Do you have a problem with artificial sweetners? I just intensely dislike the taste of them but don't have a problem otherwise...
  16. Tonight I'm having Ham & Bean soup made with ham and broth my dear DIL sent home with me after Easter dinner (also can add a stash of single servings for my freezer). And later tonight...a piece of leftover Flourless Chocolate Cake. Yum!
  17. The contrast I had for my abdominal CT scan was Volumen and it is gluten-free (it was nasty stuff though and I was basically choking it down by the time I got to the last bottle). I lived in the bathroom the rest of the day so I think that's pretty normal. I don't recall if the D continued the next day. Hope you feel better soon and that the results of...
  18. I would feel comfortable doing that (I don't have arrowroot either). Or possibly a combo of tapioca starch and potato starch or even cornstarch. I need to make this bread as it sounds so good.
  19. On my last appt. in early April, my GI doc said that so many of his celiac patients complained about the cost and how difficult it was to be gluten-free. So when he asked me if I found that to be true, my answer was No and No. I think the key is that you really have to cook to find the diet fairly easy and with so many families eating out so much and...
  20. I don't think the egg replacer is meant to replace all the eggs in a recipe. Just as applesauce, for instance, isn't meant to replace all the oil or butter in a recipe.
  21. I totally agree with GlutenFreeManna. Not everything we use will have a gluten-free label slapped on it and the companies are being honest about not being able to guarantee gluten-free status of ingredients. So yes, CYA statements abound. That said, I use Colgate toothpaste and have no problem with it.
  22. I bought San-J at a regular grocery store (specifically Giant Foods here in the East). A health food store would probably have it, too. You may also want to look to see if they have the new gluten-free Kikkoman Soy Sauce. Kikkoman used to be my favorite before I went gluten-free.
  23. I'm not sure what dough enhancer is. Is it an Ener-G product? Does the info on it say what it's supposed to do? I bought some Ener-G Egg Replacer but haven't used it yet either. I've seen recipes that call for it in a Bette Hagman cookbook I bought a short while ago, but I haven't tried any of her recipes yet. I did use the cake enhancer yesterday...
  24. Glad you liked it! My non-gluten eating family liked it, too, when I made it for Easter. It is rich so hence it's important to have very small servings. First time around I made it exactly...this time I didn't use all the ganache as I wanted just a glaze and not 1/2" thick ganache in the middle. The ganache could easily be cut down to make half or two...
  25. You're welcome, Marilyn! I had a choice of a free grinder or the slicer/grater/shredder. I figured I had enough grater/slicer thingies...but have since added a mandolin to my wish list. Go figure. I think some of these KA attachments are pretty hard on the motor, too (like the ice cream maker).
