  1. bartful~ my heart hurt for you. You did all you could do but even knowing that I know that you still hurt. My mom died in 2007 from what we 100% now believe was undiagnosed celiac complications. There is nothing I can do to change anything but still I live with the pain of wishing that I had been diagnosed sooner. Maybe I could have helped ease some...
  2. My two gluten eaters have one kitchen counter that is theirs to use. If they have gluten (and really there is very little in the house) they leave the toaster or plate on their counter for me to clean up. I prefer that so that I know the space is clean - my way!
  3. I feel so bad for you. My partner wanted tacos with canned roast beef the other night. Ingredients: wheat. Ugh. I get physically ill at the thought of putting the stuff in a bowl and mixing it up. I don't have small kids any more and can only imagine how hard it must be to deal with all that gluten! Feel better!
  4. I used to have a potato at Wendys and have never been sick but.... I watch they pull the potatoes and don't know what they touched before and who wrapped the potatoes and...and...and.. There is just too much gluten flying around in these places for me to want to take a chance any more. I will go to a chain place like Outback or Red Robin but just won't...
  5. Hello ~ for any of you that are interested we have a new support group in Hemet that meets the 2nd Saturday of every month, 9:30 a.m. (to whenever we wind down) at the Red Robin on Florida Ave. We had 19 people show last month! Red Robin is great, they have a special prep area just for us and our server is Celiac/cross contamination trained. For any more...
  6. I was not diagnosed until 2 years after my mom dies, however knowing what I now know I believe that she was Celiac. She suffered with gut issues all her life, had diabetes, fibromyalgia, intense itchy bumps on knees and elbows, severe bouts of constipation/diarrhea, restless leg, bruising, mouth sores and on the list goes. She was pretty much a mess and...
  7. I couldn't agree more. If we find a place that is willing to accommodate then we need to be appreciative enough to thank them and let them know. If they can't, thank them anyway. We can't always have our way (as much as we might want it!). I also figure that any time we step outside of our own gluten free home we take a chance. Glutening can happen anywhere...

cait ~ I have no words of wisdom for you but I can sympathize with you 100%. Every year we rv all summer and encounter much the same as you. The last 2 weeks we stayed with friends and it was either dinner at their place or out to eat at places I couldn't eat. I just went out to our rv and made my own meal, which I know isn't a luxury you have, or I scrubbed...
  9. I agree with kitgordon! If I cook (and I am the cook) it's my way. Eat your gluten food in a restaurant or prepare it yourself using only the counter on the right side of the sink. I have to be able to walk into the kitchen and know that I will be safe. Period. They aren't sick, I am. That sounds sort of mean but we have enough stress and worry about CC...
  10. This is just a thought...... I was on 2 omeprazole a day for almost 2 years. Someone on this board mentioned that they can work against you. I have been drinking 2.5oz of pure aloe (not the gel!) twice a day and have slowly been weaning myself of of the omeprazole. It's taken 2 months but I am now down to only 1/2 a pill a day. The health food store nutritionist...
  11. I'm so sorry! I know how hard it is to manage when you are the adult but I can't imagine how hard it must be with kids! Sending good thoughts.......
  12. My dr took me off of all raw veggies till my gut heals more. Cooked is much kinder to the gut.
  13. I didn't realize that a state would have a law like that! wow We rv and travel through Washington state a lot as my daughter lives there. Guess I have been lucky as I take my own food along. I usually just ask for an extra plate & then say something like "I would love to order some of your food items but have just too many food allergies (easier to...
  14. I watched a friend, who insisted she could prepare for me, empty the gluten crackers into a bowl then turn and rinse (!) her hands - No soap washing - while telling me how careful she is. Not!! I have had to re-educate some friends as in the beginning i would eat at a friend's if they were careful to keep things separate but have learned the hard...
  15. Educating the kids is the best way to go. My 8 yr old granddaughter understands the basics and picks out the gluten-free food in the grocery store and always asks me if something is ok. And so heart warming was my oldest grandson who would only have his high school graduation dinner party in a restaurant where I could eat too. The kids wanted to be sure...
  16. I throw in some tuna or beans - something I can eat out of a can cold if there is no way to heat. Something that is ok to eat when starving.
  17. It's a great book and i lived with it in my purse for the first year. Use it to help buy mainstream items BUT Always read the ingredients before buying. Manufacturers change suppliers, ingredients can change. The book is only as good as the day the info was received by them.
  18. eating out used to be no big deal - we did it quite often. Now we go somewhere I can eat maybe 2x's a month & it is a treat. When we are traveling during the summer and my SIL is visiting we eat lunch out every day or I should say they do & I bring something for me which gets real old real fast. It's usually at a place where there is nothing for...
  19. Depending on the situation but I will say that I am celiac and must be gluten free which is like having a very severe food allergy. Once someone hears the "severe food allergy" part they seems to get it and back off.
  20. In the beginning I fell asleep thinking about celiac and woke up with celiac on my mind. I wondered if it would be that way the rest of my life! Took along time but finally it's not All I think about. It sure is nice to just celiac talk though with others that understand.
  21. I agree - take your own food. I haved said that the more I heal the more sensitive I have become (that part is true). My bff prides herself on being able to cook a gluten-free meal for me, she even wears disposable gloves... but I am having second thoughts about that too. It's the "whole kitchen that I don't have control over" thing. Although I will eat...

  23. we buy Planters and have had no problems. Can't believe how many brands of nuts have wheat in them. What's with that!
  24. If you are new to this you may want to leave the sweets & treats and other hard to digest things till you have a chance to heal more. I too jumped in to eat everything I could as soon as I could and paid the price. It takes some people several months or more to completely heal. Give yourself time - easier said than done I know! As for work, hmmm...
  25. Little to nothing in the home is gluten but we have one bottom drawer in the refrig and one bottom shelf in the pantry for gluten if brought into the home. The counter on the right side of the sink is for gluten (cereal/toast). Person using any gluten leaves the dirty dish or toaster out so that I know the area has been glutened and I prefer to clean the...
