ARCHIVED How Careful Do I Need To Be?
cap6 replied to milkmommy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I use the "rat poison" phrase also. Touch if you must but always wash! I bought a new fresh supply of kitchen towels & wash rags as I prefer that to a sponge. I go through a lot as I use & toss in the laundry. Better to be safe than sick. -
ARCHIVED Just A Warning Concerning gluten-free Pizza
cap6 replied to Marc49's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree that Amy's is terrible. I was so excited to find it in the freezer section, went home and cooked it up... Nasty! I don't like to waste but it went in the trash. Ugh -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Nuts & Seeds
cap6 replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Check out Planters Dry Roasted Peanuts. The only listed ingredient is peanuts. I eat them a lot. I agree - what's with wheat products in nuts??? -
ARCHIVED Trouble Eating But Need To Eat
cap6 replied to superfob's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would never eat at a buffet as there is no way to know what went on in the kitchen and too much risk of serving spoons being switched or someone dripping. You can't see it but that doesn't mean it isn't there. I run from those things. -
ARCHIVED I Can't Do This
cap6 replied to NewbieMarch2011's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is hard to sit and watch others eat foods you love when you eat out. Eat first. If you are full it is much easier. Or take a container of gluten-free food with you. I briefly explain my gluten-free issue to the server & ask for an extra plate, scoop my food onto it and enjoy the evening. I never go out without taking something otherwise I feel like... -
ARCHIVED Help With Symptoms Please
cap6 replied to DanieGurl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I asked my eye dr about the floaters as I get them from time to time. He told me that it was quite normal for a few floaters especially as we get older ( I am 60). You are maybe a little young so maybe check with your eye dr? -
The social eating thing is a real pain. Friends came over the other night & asked if they could please bring dessert & they would bring ice cream for me. Even asked what kind I could have. They arrived with pies (!!!) and brownie fudge ice cream. She wanted to know why I couldn't just eat the ice cream & leave the brownie part. grrrrr. And...

ARCHIVED Desperately Needing Some Answers, Please!
cap6 replied to Noni's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know if you don't cook because you don't like it (that's me!) or don't know how (also me). But gluten-free foods are so very expensive. I am learning some cooking basics in order to survive. gluten-free foods are so full of calories and fat grams, not really healthy. Any way you could get a simple food steamer, they sell for around $20.00, and... -
ARCHIVED 3 Months Down. But Still Having Ups And Downs!
cap6 replied to jess-gf's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It took me a year to feel like dancing again. At 13 months I still have days when I hurt and am unable to trace it to any particular item. It can take several months before dairy products will agree with you. Just now I can eat a little bit of cheese or a bite of ice cream once in a while. Lots of whole foods and nix to the processed stuff. When I first... -
ARCHIVED Do You Eat Foods Produced On Shared Lines?
cap6 replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am not super sensitive but if I have a choice I avoid items made on shared lines. I don't eat a lot of processed foods so it isn't as much of an issue but I just feel safer not. I know most of our homes are "shared" but I do the cleaning so I know how clean it is! Just a little quirk I guess. -
ARCHIVED Coffee
cap6 replied to NateJ's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Coffee Mate and it says "Gluten Free" under the ingredients. I had to cut out coffee in the beginning as it ripped up my stomach. After a few months I was slowly able to add it again. Healing time I guess! -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Makeup In Dept. Stores
cap6 replied to wannabhealthy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
my reason for wanting personal products gluten-free is shampoo can run down across the mouth if not ultra careful. To me it doesn't make sense to wash my hands in a soap containing gluten, put lotion on my hands that contains lotion and then go touch food. I don't go over board on making personal products gluten-free but those items I am pretty careful... -
ARCHIVED Manager Bringing Gluten Free Cake
cap6 replied to Melstar23's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am at the point where I figure that it is me that will spend hours in the bathroom not them. I just say that I can't eat processed foods and that the more I heal the more senstive I become so I have to make it easy on everyone and only eat my food. It is sort of like walking on broken glass but you have to do what is right for you. -
ARCHIVED Protein Powder?
cap6 replied to WinterSong's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not a cook so this way of life has been a challenge - but I'm learning. Do you use the broth straight as it is or dilute it some. If a recipe calls for broth do you use the amount of pure broth? -
Check out out the Wm K. Warren Medical Research Foundation for Celiac in San Diego at the University of California San Diego. They are wonderful and there is a Celiac GI doctor thaty works through the foundation. Also a top notch nutritionist.

I know how awful you can feel! i have terrible C issues, worse now since going gluten-free which is strange. Miralax doesn't touch it. I eat fruit, veggies, drink a gallon of water every day, take suppls and everything that has been suggested I try. The only things that moves me now (no pun intended!)is a tea called Smooth Move that is, of course, gluten...

ARCHIVED I Can't Do This
cap6 replied to NewbieMarch2011's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Does it now seem like too much to bear? Yes. Does it now feel like it is overwhelming? Yes. Do you now feel like you are missing the "good" stuff? yes. Is it worth it to continue eating as you are? no Will you feel better? yes. Does it get easier and easier with time? yes. Would I ever eat gluten again? Given what I know now - no way. I am... -
ARCHIVED Controversial Facebook Post By Chef
cap6 replied to idonteatwheat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
OMG!!! This actually brought tears to my eyes at the absolute cruelty of someone. Yes, someone may well leave that establishment feeling fine but then end up being sick for weeks. I can't understand how anyone could do this to another human. -
ARCHIVED Canker Sores?
cap6 replied to hannahm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Hannah ~ I had really bad canker sores before going gluten-free, as many as 8 or 9 at a time. It took awhile but since going gluten-free they are for the most part gone. Once in awhile I will get one but it never gets to the painful ulcer point. I did get a mouth wash from my dr and I believe it was called miracle mouth that was a numbing agent that... -
ARCHIVED Dr. Oz: Enemy Of Gluten Free Efforts
cap6 replied to jessicaljensen's topic in Publications & Publicity
Not one word was said about the dangers of cross-contamination for the Celiac. (or was I out of the room) Gluten free diet as a "fad" is 100% different from being Celiac! -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Had Experience With Amitiza? gluten-free?
cap6 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Has anyone had any experience with Amitiza? It was just prescribed for me for severe constipation. I really hate to get started on any "heavy duty" stuff but.... I am getting a little desperate here Also, does anyone know if it it gluten-free for sure. Everything I have looked up shows that it is but want to be absolute! Thanks.......... -
ARCHIVED Resturant Chains That Have Gluten Free Options?
cap6 replied to norahsmommy's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
my experiences at Outback and Olive Gardens have been excellent. They do have separate prep areas & orders are tagged. If you live near a Fusion Pizza - they are great. Our local Red Robin has 2 celiac trained servers, although I would probably be very careful at ones out of the area. Chili's is ok, but I order very simple - salad. Just don't trust.... -
any chance that you can switch the house over to all gluten-free? If you stick to whole food rather than the special gluten-free foods it's not terribly more cost wise. My kids are grown so I admire those of you trying to do this with young kids.

ARCHIVED Constipation!
cap6 replied to missj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My C just keeps getting worse. I thought I was getting well but now with the C I feel crummy more days than not. If C is a symptom of celiac why do I still have it? Makes no sense. I have been gluten-free for a year, don't cheat, am not tempted to cheat and have been glutened very few times. I am so frustrated.
