  1. A little extra info for some added hope. 2 years before my diagnosis, the docs told me I would need an egg donor due to my poor FSH levels. Hubby had his own severe issues. We tried IUI, but never IVF because my numbers were so bad. I'm 35 now 6 weeks into my first pregnancy. I wish you the best with your emotional journey through infertility. I bought a 2 seater car for a child-free positi...

  2. Could you have a soy intolerance that's keeping your gut from fully healing? A lot of celiacs do. I don't use protein shakes so I have no idea if this is good or not, but I found this soy-free, gluten-free, dairy-free protein supplement with a Google search: Open Original Shared Link Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in. Best wishes to...
  3. Actually, no, it is an inappropriate reaction. Celiac disease is the result of the body's self-tolerance mechanism's failing. Normally, self-reactive B and T cells are supposed to be killed before they even finish developing or if by some chance they make it into circulation, they're supposed to be rendered inactive, but in many individuals that doesn't happen...
  4. Good point about the distinction. The time I got sick from our charcoal grill, husband had been toasting whole-wheat buns on it the night before and hadn't cleaned it well before putting the next night's dinner on it. I don't think our gas grill grates have been washed/degreased since I went gluten-free, but that's been fired and scraped so many times since...
  5. Yes, your symptoms could have responded that early. And some people have successfully remained gluten-free in a mixed kitchen, but I am not one of them. We had to go gluten-free except for the husband's beer brewing (for which he has his own pans and utensils) because husband's bread crumbs and what-not ended up all over the place and I kept getting CCed...
  6. I would think this would be sufficient. We're looking into installing wooden countertops in our kitchen and this is the recommended treatment for removing stains, etc. As a precaution you'd probably want to put down wax paper or plastic wrap if you were going to be rolling out pie dough or something. I don't eat directly off of my counters or cut food directly...
  7. This too. I had one weekend during which, between family obligations and grad program obligations, I had to eat in restaurants four times. I did my best to get safe meals but still ended up sick for a week. I always feel like I'm playing Russian roulette when I eat food that I (or my husband) haven't prepared so I try to spread out those occasions as much...
  8. It's not the food itself that is the problem, it's the lack of convenience. I can't eat free lunches provided by my grad program anymore. There is exactly one thing that I can eat safely from the diner across the street, so when we eat there with guest speakers I order the same thing over and over. I can't stop and pick up a pizza or Thai carryout for dinner...
  9. This. We went to a BBQ at our friends' house on the 4th of July. I brought a bag of chips to pass and made sure to open the bag and get first crack before it got passed, because pretty much everyone else grabbed a wheat bun and then put their hands right into the chip bag. Ditto for the fruit salad- before dinner it was fine and I grabbed a spoonful of it...
  10. Thanks for the Celiac Feed recommendation. I'll take a look. "Is That Gluten Free" has saved my butt at the grocery store a number of times. Well worth $6 IMO.
  11. I've had mild symptoms with occasional (every 5 years or so) bad flare-ups for my entire adult life and much of childhood/teen years, but I always recovered after a few weeks at most so I just assumed that the docs were right, I had IBS and just had to deal with it. I got sick at the end of August 2009 with a really bad upper respiratory viral infection and...
  12. Hear, hear! I had hot dogs last night for the first time since going gluten-free (happily my beloved Hebrew Nationals are safe eats). I've gotten so used to not eating breads that the Kinnikinnick buns, while good, were almost too much- too much starch, too much bready texture. I split them in half and wrapped half-buns around my hot dogs and that was...
  13. You sound a lot like me. I've always had mild problems with occasional bad flareups (that doctors never took seriously and told me to treat IBS with more whole-grain fiber) and a 6-year struggle with infertility makes me suspect that I've had latent disease since I was a teenager. But full-blown celiac symptoms kicked in last September after a really nasty...
  14. These moments are amazing, aren't they? My sister-in-law is getting married later this month, and my husband's aunt and uncle threw a wedding shower for her and her fiance last month. The uncle has DH and has been gluten-free since last fall. All of the food save one dessert was gluten-free. It was wonderful to eat whatever I wanted from the table...
  15. Yep, mood swings are one of my biggest early symptoms. Usually if I've been glutened the night before, I'll wake up in the morning in an absolutely foul mood and pick fights with my husband for no reason. I know I'm being irrational but I feel like I can't do anything about it. That usually passes by the 24 hour point and then I'm depressed for a few days...
  16. Migraine (sometimes for several days), nasty mood swings (one of the earliest symptoms), stomach gurgling (several days), bloating, constipation (a couple of days) followed by diarrhea (a couple of days), extreme fatigue, acne breakout. I've never vomited but did get the dry heaves from migraine pain the last time I took a really bad CC hit. These are all...
  17. Hmm, this is a good point. People who don't have gluten problems don't even think about it, so it's definitely a possibility. We went to our friends' house last night for a barbecue. We brought our own portable grill and burger patties, chips, and lettuce leaves for my burgers. Everyone else ate veggie burgers on whole wheat buns. Of course since our...
  18. My friend can't have it at all. No dairy cheese, milk, butter, yogurt, nothing with milk derivatives (casein, lactose) added- which is a majority of processed foods, it seems. All of it makes her sick. Alternatively, when I finally went gluten-free just over 6 months ago I had gotten sick enough that even butter tore me up so I had to give up dairy completely...
  19. It absolutely appalls me how terrible hospital cafeterias are for special diets. I'm a grad student in a medical school, and there are exactly two things I can eat in the attached hospital caf: a veggie-only salad from the salad bar (anything after the veggies is potentially contaminated with croutons) with oil and vinegar, or veggie sushi with the Kari-out...
  20. You may be more sensitive to dairy than you think. My best friend has a casein intolerance. Even a little bit (like a few shreds of cheese by accident) will have her in the bathroom for hours. A lot of people with gluten intolerance also have this.
  21. I eat out at most twice per month. I seem to get glutened or at least CCed about 1/3 of the time. IMO the alternative doesn't suck that much.
  22. That actually sounds like an outright allergy. I get a similar reaction to some tree nuts. Be careful.
  23. Probably because FDA standards don't require manufacturers to worry about barley, only wheat (and only because of allergies, not celiac disease or gluten intolerance). The companies that label gluten are going above and beyond what they are legally required to do.
  24. So are Scharffen-Berger, Dagoba, and Vosges chocolate bars (check labels on the latter because not all are gluten-free but they clearly label the ones that are). Yum.
  25. Whoops- just re-read the first post and you are on iron therapy. Never mind.
