ARCHIVED Are Places Like Panera & Chipotle Safe?
i-geek replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Someone asked for opinions. We gave them. It was not a personal attack on you, geez. Oh, and thanks for being so condescendingly insulting as to imply that people who complain of cross-contamination from the servers' gloves are imagining things. Gosh, that sounds like all the doctors who've told so many of us for years that our symptoms were "all in our heads... -
ARCHIVED So Confused. Celiac Or Not
i-geek replied to realmaverick's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My big, full-on "glutened" symptoms are usually migraine headache, bloating, constipation, and intense fatigue (this was my life for the months before I went gluten-free). I seem to get D more often with smaller doses (i.e. cross-contamination)- maybe my body tries to flush those out, but with a bigger hit it seems like my gut can't deal with it all and instead... -
ARCHIVED Realization About My Celiac
i-geek replied to Lindsay630's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We don't cook gluten in our kitchen. My husband can brew his beer (he has his own pans and utensils for that), drink beer, and bring in gluten-y carryout food provided he is very careful and washes his hands before touching handles and whatnot. We found that I healed a lot faster once we stopped trying to keep gluten foods around and prepare them in the kitchen... -
LOVE Five Guys. I need to go eat there again soon.
-
Avoid California rolls unless they are made with real crab meat. Imitation crab often has wheat starch added as a binder. I ate sushi last night: salmon roll and chili tuna roll (restaurant specialty: tuna meat mixed with chili sauce (Sriracha) and sesame oil. I skipped the wasabi and brought my own soy sauce. Good stuff and no problems. I also ate a TON...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Packaged Food Is Expensive!
i-geek replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I tend to favor snacks like Kettle Chips or Tostitos corn chips over pretzels, and make cookies and breads from scratch, although I don't make them often. There are excellent recipes on the Open Original Shared Link and Open Original Shared Link blogs. Although...I did buy a box of Glutino's Gluten-Free Pantry all-purpose flour so that I could use a nut bread... -
ARCHIVED Progresso Soup
i-geek replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The potato and cheese one is gluten-free? Woo-hoo! I always just get the lentil one because it's delicious and I found it was gluten-free by accident. -
ARCHIVED Poll: How Were You Diagnosed? (Or Were You?)
i-geek replied to flutterby's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had to self-diagnose. My doctor was convinced that I was simply under stress since I'm a student and couldn't possibly have celiac disease since "it's so rare!" and thus ran only one celiac test from the panel (TTG IgA). That came up negative, but 1) we don't know if I produce normal amounts of IgA or not since she didn't test for total IgA and 2) I was... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Canned Soup?
i-geek replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yep. Progresso is really good about labelling their gluten-free soups. The lentil one is my favorite. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Fast Food French Fries
i-geek replied to MacieMay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Five Guys restaurants only do french fries in their fryers, so those are safe. In fact, the only gluten items on the menu are buns for the burgers and hot dogs. All of the toppings are safe (and the burgers are good!). -
Yes. I had a nasty reaction and since a Think Thin was the only thing I'd eaten that afternoon, I suspected the sugar alcohols. I'm not a fan of them.
-
No- for me it's the sugar substitute. I didn't like the taste and it affected my gut rather unpleasantly (nothing to do with gluten, just some of us react badly to sugar alcohols). I don't care about the "gluteny" factor- I preferred Lara and Kind bars over granola or cookie bars even before celiac disease.
-
This is our favorite, too. We also like Mrs. Leeper's corn pastas. We've tried the Tinkyada several times and we just can't get used to it. Something about the texture seems off to us. We've tried different cooking times, etc. and we always get the same results.

ARCHIVED Healing With Gluten Free Diet
i-geek replied to Judy3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yay for the worst symptoms going away! It will probably take a bit longer for the rest- you didn't get to this point overnight so it will take some time to reverse the damage. I wasn't as ill as you and I think it still took me about a month to stop reacting to things like peppers, cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cabbage, etc.) and alcoholic beverages, about... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Wine Lovers
i-geek replied to BrookeT's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't react to wine, either. It seems more likely that you are reacting to the sulfites when you order wine in restaurants. -
Lara bars and Kind bars are my favorites (especially the new dark chocolate-cherry-cashew and blueberry-pistachio Kind varieties- YUM). The chocolate Bumble bars are really good, too. Haven't tried any others...oh, except the Think Thin bars. I wasn't impressed.

ARCHIVED Never Feeling Full Or Satisfied?
i-geek replied to c12's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, sounds like anemia to me. Both the steak and the potato are iron-rich. I craved beef when I first went gluten-free and I've always craved potatoes. I also craved avocados for a few months (fat malabsorption) and was eating those daily for a little while. Interestingly, now that my gut is healed I rarely have food cravings. I used to have them ALL the... -
I craved beef and avocados for a few months- probably due to iron/B vitamin deficiencies and fat malabsorption. The cravings and intense hunger did wane as my gut healed and was able to start actually absorbing nutrition from food.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Seasoning
i-geek replied to MacieMay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
About the Lactaid milk: that will only work if your daughter is specifically lactose-intolerant. If she's casein-intolerant (casein is a protein in milk that is a major allergen/source of food intolerance), she'll react to the Lactaid milk as she would to any milk. -
ARCHIVED Are Places Like Panera & Chipotle Safe?
i-geek replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
That's why I don't eat at Chipotle any more. I have successfully eaten at Qdoba several times- I always get the naked burrito (aka burrito bowl). The ones I've been to use spoons or tongs to handle all of the food items which lessens the chance of CC. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Like Being Celiac
i-geek replied to runningcrazy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not happy about the disease per se, but since autoimmune diseases run on both sides of the family, I'm very glad to have this one rather than Graves disease, diabetes, or rheumatoid arthritis (all possibilities with my genes). I'm hoping that I caught it early enough to stave off the others. I'm not happy that I have to watch everything I eat and that... -
ARCHIVED Concerned I Am Not Eating Enough On Gluten-Free Diet
i-geek replied to Cat Eyes's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Up your calories. I'm 5'0", 107 lbs, and I need something like 1800 calories just to maintain my weight with a moderately active lifestyle. We eat rice, beans and quinoa frequently around here, and once in a while something like millet. All good, healthy whole plant-based foods that are filling (along with everything else on your list). Also, your gut... -
ARCHIVED Oh My! Do You Remember These Delicious Cookies?
i-geek replied to runningcrazy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you haven't tried this recipe, I advise you to reconsider: Open Original Shared Link. I need to make another batch of them. They were easy and SO good: buttery, just crispy enough, lots of vanilla and melty chocolate- my gluten-eating husband and coworkers scarfed them down. I think the only change I might make to the recipe is to sub in millet flour in... -
ARCHIVED Oh My! Do You Remember These Delicious Cookies?
i-geek replied to runningcrazy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you can eat peanuts, these are good: Open Original Shared Link. Last Christmas I made these with chocolate chips (maybe 1/2 cup? I can't remember) and they were a big hit. If you can't eat peanuts I don't see why they wouldn't work with other nut butters. -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed: How To Keep Eating Enough?
i-geek replied to GFshay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I try and get protein and fat at breakfast (in the form of peanut butter on my rice cakes, eggs, cheese, whatever) so that I'm off to a good start. Lunch is almost always leftovers from the previous night's safe and usually homemade dinner (e.g. last night's was gluten-free pasta salad with canned tuna, canned beans, diced cucumber and garlic-red wine...
