  1. Those are also the neighbors who cut down the apple tree in their yard, cut down the lilac bush in YOUR yard, and have no sense of psillyness. On another note, I think I am going to take my aimless-not cleaning self kayaking. And not fall in. Maybe. Or perhaps I shall.
  2. Besides, despite the fact that this is an international board so legal drinking ages vary, should we really be talking about alcohol on the teenager board?
  3. Sun isn't a great source of D in the Northeast. The latitude is too high for the angles to be right for much of the year. Supplements or cod liver oil are more reliable. Besides, sunscreen is advised for all skin types for all exposures (not that I follow that...but...) I've also had recurring deficient/low levels of D and notable bone loss at a weirdly...
  4. mmm, now I'm thinking of pignoli cookies. Any, my supper was: quick steamed cabbage (s & p only) split pea falafel bread (gasp) homemade nutella
  5. Buckwheat comes in different forms. Read the package's instructions for how much water to use. Flour-- easy to makes pancakes, muffins, bread, etc. cream of -- basically porrige, cook it like oatmeal Groats/kasha-- cut up pieces that you can toast and cook like rice Whole buckwheat-- boil follow the package's instructions I like it a lot. It substitutes...
  6. Yeah, at the very least, pica should sent your toddler off for anemia testing. Pica is pretty well associated with anemia in pregnant women, although less so in the general population. Even if the doc won't do celiac, at least get the poor baby tested for anemia.
  7. OMG. Now I understand why I got called "ma'am" at Walmart one time when I was 18. I was wearing TOO MUCH clothing. (although I did get un unfortunate view of someone's bare rear end today. poufy wickedly short skirt + thong(or not?) in public?? really, how does anyone sit on public benches/seast/buses/trains without that layer of fabric? I'd get a...
  8. Split Pea Falafel Brown Rice Cous-Cous with Butternut Squash, Herbs, and Olives Blueberries. LOTS of blueberries. Chocolate Hazelnut Mini-muffin No green here, but I had some local asparagus with lunch.
  9. 225 g split peas (a little more than 1 US cup) 4 cloves garlic 1 onion, medium 3 T brown rice flour 4 t ground cumin 3 t dried majoram 1/2 to 1 t red pepper flakes 1 t sumac (or use some lemon juice) 1 t dried thyme 2 t baking powder Oil, lots Soak peas overnight or for at least 8 hours. Drain, and rinse. Peel and trim the garlic and onions...
  10. B12 deficiency typically takes a long time to surface-- your liver stores quite a lot of it. Vegans, for example, can go 10 years (often) before symptoms develop. Elderly folks whose stomachs stop producing enough acid to break it off the proteins it's connected to also often don't develop symptoms for 10 to 15 years. It's probably something that had been...
  11. brown-eyed girl, and it's covered by so many i don't know who did the original
  12. Yes, do always take it with food and fat of some sort. I also had both full-on deficiency and then low levels despite supplementation around 1000 IU/day. My bloodwork came back solidly normal after 6 months on 4,000 IU and being gluten-free for almost all of that.
  13. Good, solid advice. Exactly what I expect from this lovely crowd. But, folks, I'm sorry, I'm sure I'm insufficiently funny and I have been guilty of the blatant HERE link. (In my defense, I was writing partly for my grandmother, and blatant seems advisable.) I would recommend it if you like writing at all! I've found the discipline to be motivating...
  14. scrambled eggs brown rice cous-cous (meh... not so sure about it) with bay, sage, thyme, and garlic butternut squash chocolate hazelnut mini-muffin(s) Egyptian Mint Licorice Tea
  15. watch the sugar is flavored soymilk, if you care. I really really really love fennel. I also adore buckwheat, which I hadn't really eaten before. Otherwise, it's reinforced my love of lentils.
  16. pasta and bars (mrs may's is my recent kick) via amazon, as well as a few experimental goods like coconut flour (it's going to take me FOREVER to use it all). Pasta is really the only thing that I wince at too much, but I may get more buckwheat through them once I finish what I have. i've heard their prices on coconut oil are good, though. Azure Standard...
  17. I used to work next to a germiphobe (sort of?) who worked from home some days. She quite thoroughly cleaned her desk area the day after she had worked from home. But she used hand sanitizer, not actual hand washing. We call it "working from home" although, I will admit, there are some days when working from home also means working 12 hour days and...
  18. I fear blocks of cheese, but more for the comfort of my cubicle-mate! Okay, that was silly. I'll shut up now. But I'll first reiterate that you should always read the ingredients anyway. If it's got a list, read 'em.
  19. Hello all, I initially started a blog when I had to communicate to friends and family what I could and was eating. It's actually turning into something I really enjoy, and I'm starting to feel the pull of marketing and getting readership. Experienced bloggers-- what did you do that worked really well? What was a waste of time? Non-bloggers: what...
  20. I periodically require my coffee shops to hand me the boxes/containers. All of them. Not everytime, but every couple of months or if I see a different color carton. (Chai and hot chocolate drinker, here, so don't ask me about coffee.) Anecdotes about popping out to buy new containers of soymilk when they ran out has me wary enough to keep a close eye...
  21. Yes, indeed. However, I do believe that many people feel better on them because typically many of the restricted things are not so great for you. For example sugar, or caffiene, or refined grains, etc. Most of those lead to the high followed by the crash.
  22. The only team/group/projectile-based* sport that Bob hasn't joined me has been croquet. Not sure why he doesn't like it... *we avoid discussing ball sports, as it seems in induce snickers even in those who are old enough to simply twitch their eye brows appropriately at the pun.
  23. ^We can add call my mother and complain in there somewhere near the end.^
  24. 1. go for a run. 2. eat chocolate. 3. consider the fact that i have a treatable autoimmune condition, as opposed to ending up with RA (like my cousin) or heart failure (like a young friend). 4. eat more chocolate. 5. remember that i looooove potatoes. 6. do something non-food related, like kayaking or spinning (yarn). Minimizing dairy...
