  2. HLA-DQ is made from two proteins, alpha and beta. You get two genes for alpha and two for beta, one from each parent. The genes are called HLA-DQA1 and HLA-DQB1. DQ2 and DQ8 are the so-called celiac HLA-DQB1 chains. The third so-called celiac gene is HLA-DQA1 *0505. It is possible to be unlucky enough to get all three.

  11. Enterolab claims that there is enough trace gluten in a typical diet that they can detect antibodies. Perhaps you should call or write and ask if a challenge makes the testing more sensitive? Seems like it would.

  13. You may have to find the best neurologist you can and go to the appointment with articles on gluten ataxia. Sometimes we have to educate our doctors. Most of the tests for gluten ataxia are research tests, not ones available at a lab, so it's largely a matter of ruling out other disorders and trying the diet.
  14. Do you have the link to the effect of milk allergy on biopsy? I'd really like to see it. If your kids have positive blood tests it's very reasonable to ask that they not undergo endoscopy. Some Drs will diagnose with a celiac parent, bloodwork that falls on the gluten-free diet, and a big response to the diet.

It was well before the research showing celiac is common in the US and I didn't know a thing about the testing.   16. I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope you don't lose your baby because of gluten. This disease is so miserable sometimes... Sounds like you need a complete ban on oatmeal, not just steel-cut! Some people with celiac (maybe 10%?) have a full gluten reaction to oats.
  17. Board mods have said that some companies market so aggressively that they run bots to pick up mention of their name. The bot makes a bunch of advertising posts the moderators have to block, which adds a lot of work for them.   18. If there is no rash, there is nothing to biopsy. It all depends on how fast your rash goes away.
  19. Check pet foods, shampoo for wheat ingredients. We had someone who didn't get well until their critters were gluten-free because of wheat dust around the house from kibble. I assume he isn't eating oats. No Play-Doh or other gluten toys, right?

  21. The only issues is how you'll feel about the diet five years from now. If you're celiac you can't ever go back to gluten. If you are not tested you have to assume you are celiac. Basically you're on the diet for life. If you are negative by blood and biopsy you can see if you've retained tolerance in a few years. I never got tested and gluten still...

  25. Hi and welcome. You look to be in the right place! If you have dermatitis herpetiformis (we call it DH), you are celiac. False negative blood panels are not uncommon.
