  1. @txplowgirl - you make me want to drive a truck!:-)
  2. I'm a mom and I HATED to cook. We ate out ALOT - healthy, but expensive. So now, I cook - still hate it, but it has to be done. And while I don't have a "job" I am homeschooling my two middle school daughters. I've been gluten free for 1 year and 2 months. Good days and bad. Nobody else in my family has been diagnosed, but that's because they don't...
  3. Hi Colorado - I too had no GI symptoms, they found out I had Celiac while trying to diagnose me with lymphoma! Turns out my Celiac Symptoms were mimicking cancer, so I had NO clue. The first few months it was hard to tell if I reacted to gluten. I never got sick. The only positive change for me was that I was gaining back the weight I had lost. ...
  4. I was the same exact way - no stomach problems, just losing weight and literally starving myself even though I was eating all the time. When they said it was Celiac I was doubtful, but went on the diet anyway. Within a few months I started gaining weight, my one sure sign that the gluten free diet was doing something right. (My intestines were healing...
  5. Here is one wheat straw alternative: Open Original Shared Link and that was found with just a quick google search. Don't give up your garden dreams; there are always alternatives!
  6. WOW! What a wonderful post - if this is truly what is causing your poor health and you get organized to educate doctors PLEASE sign me up! I had an oncologist that was convinced I had lymphoma, scared the bejezzus out of me and my family. I even asked her if it could be Celiacs, asked her to run the tests TWICE! She refused, she was so sure I had cancer...

  8. I would never have thought that straw/hay would bother me but yesterday we went to see some baby goats at a local Goat Dairy Farm and it was a very windy day. I even mentioned to my daughter jokingly that all this straw dust flying around wasn't good. Two hours later I was throwing up - my tell-tale sign that I've been glutened. (I've just recently found...
  9. Or a Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. I was bloated for a bit after diagnosis last fall and did a SIBO test and that's what it was. Took antibiotics and probiotics for a few weeks. Also I have taken out alot of other grains from my diet even though they are gluten free. The more I read about diets and humans the more I'm realizing that perhaps the...
  10. When I was diagnosed I had swollen lymph nodes, increased lymphocytes and abdominal tenderness. It took 6 months for my lymph nodes to stop swelling (although mine where abdominal lymph nodes, I don't know if that matters). I also found out a few months later that I had a small intestinal bowel infection and after a round of strong antibiotics my abdominal...
  11. I am sorry you are having a hard time lately. I've been diagnosed for 9 months now and just this past weekend I had a mini-pity party 'melt-down' hissy fit about being Celiac. I was in full blown toddler tantrum mode. I have the best supportive family and my friends are great about it. I haven't been glutened and actually don't even react to gluten (except...
  12. I'm sorry you are going through all this stress. 8 months ago (seems like yesterday) the doctors told me I had lymphoma and sent me off to surgery (abdominal lymph nodes) and prepped me for chemo. Sure my blood work was wacky - but show me a Celiac's who's isn't! I questioned the doctors, sought a second opinion and they sent me to be tested for Celiacs...
  13. Hi asaldana, I live in Raleigh and have Celiacs. I don't go to Duke physicians but have the name of Duke Gasto of Raleigh - 919-862-5075. Here is a link to Duke Health's website w/ gastro doctors: Open Original Shared Link My daughter sees Dr. Ulshen, but he specializes in pediatrics only. Dr. Branch and Deihl are recommended though. My doctor is Dr...
  14. I, too, had no visual symptoms except unexplained weight loss. I have no symptoms when I eat gluten today after being gluten free 7 months. My only confirmation is that I have gained back the 25 lbs. I lost. It is a very diverse disease, isn't it. I'm glad you found out so that your grandson can heal and grow to be a healthy 'old man'!
  15. I agree with Kareng - teflon in your food isn't good for anyone, celiac or not. But your angel/demon story is cute - let the angel win, you'll feel better for it.
  16. I just wanted to say how extremely sorry I am for you. I can't imagine what it must be like to be able to eat only 9 foods. I pray that it gets easier for you and your little sweeties. Gosh, I hope it does. Do you think as you start healing you will be able to introduce different foods?
  17. If you feel better gluten free, then stick with it. Girlfriend will have to deal with it, that is her problem. Your problem is your health. Why in the world would she want to date someone who is sick all the time? If she sees you firm in your conviction to be gluten free then she will become that way, too. If she sees you wishy-washy, then she will be...
  18. You have gotten some great advice and you seem better in your last few posts. Celiac Disease isn't for whimps, huh? I've been gluten free for 7 months and just last week I had a day where I was mad, frustrated and snappy at people because I was done with all the "gluten-free crap". I swear we need a 12 step program for Celiacs! I hope you keep coming...
  19. I am sorry for the shock of your diagnosis. I know what it's like. I had no GI symptoms, just wacky blood tests results, extreme fatigue, and huge abdominal lymph nodes. They told me I had cancer. For a month I was preparing for chemo, had surgery, told my kids. When they hit me with the Celiac diagnosis I was relieved. Happy. Then reality hit. The...
  20. Awww, these stories are soooo sweet! Great thread I hope keeps at the top. But I have to disagree with the OP - I have the best family! But I think it is wonderful what your parents did - love it!!!!! To add my own sweet family story: Every Wednesday my mom works a half day so she can take care of her elderly mom. And every Wednesday my...
  21. I cannot imagine my health in the hands of another person, especially someone so cavalier towards your diagnosis and treatment. I am truly sorry! You aren't being OCD. Tell her that gluten is a toxic poison to your body. Would she want any amount of arsenic near her or her children? I think not. Our bodies react to gluten like a poison. I have...
  22. I'm sorry this happened to you - stinks that you can't eat her goodies. But I immediately thought of her situation, too. What in the world could she have done differently and yet, keep all the gifts equal? Would you really want her to bake a batch of gluten-free things for you? And I'm sure there are others who receive her baked goods and can't eat them...
  23. TOTALLY agree with this - you do not have to have a doctor's "note" to go gluten free. If it makes you feel better then do it! (Gosh, that sounded like bad parenting advice, didn't it?!)
  24. I had positive bloodwork and NO typical Celiac symptoms. It was a fluke they found Celiacs. Have her blood retested and go from there.
  25. I'm so sorry you have suffered for so long! It sounds like you are on the right track though. I have heard doctors recommending eating 3- 4 slices of bread a day (or the equivalent) when doing a gluten challenge before Celiac testing. Hopefully your tests are soon. You can also have Pepto Bismol, Zantac and various other medicines on hand to help deal...
