Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. I voted hard less than one year only because the "diet" is so all-encompassing. It is more of a life-style change than a diet. (I hate the word diet actually, since it sounds like a choice, especially when people make New Year's Resolutions! ). It has been hard, but do-able, learning how to read labels, reading and educating myself and family and...
  2. BELIEVE me when I say, I've told dear hubby what he needs to do! He has been right beside me through my whole ordeal, I have educated him on everything I read. He knows that if I don't stay gluten free that I will possibly have worse diseases come along. But, when it comes to him he is in denial. He thinks the antibodies are caused by something else because...
  3. I hear ya! I have Celiac and when I was diagnosed I made my girls and husband get tested. (Why my husband, he isn't blood related? His brother has it, too!). Hubby's bloodwork came back positive. He won't get an upper GI and still eats gluten. We have really cut out gluten at home but when he travels or goes to work he eats it. I don't nag or say anything...
  4. I voted great because I have my energy level back. I never got sick before so the only noticeable difference is my energy level. Oh, and I gained 24 lbs. that I desperately needed!
  5. I've had problems with anemia for a long time. Went through iron infusions for months, an endometrial ablation to stop the monthly (best thing I ever had done!) and tons of money on iron supplements. Well, wouldn't you know it - going gluten free was the answer! Now, after 7 months my iron levels are back to normal. Took a while, but it is up there now...
  6. It is hard to know what to do when tests come back and you aren't sure. Go with how you feel, but give the diet time. I have no symptoms when I eat gluten yet I know it is doing damage internally. I have to put on my girl panties and be an adult, staying far away from gluten. But I have confirmed blood work, you don't. I would do the challenge and...
  7. I was diagnosed with Celiacs and had my two daughters tested for the disease and the genetic markers. My youngest, the one with the GI problems tested positive for the genes but both girls' bloodtest came back negative. E, my youngest, chose to go gluten free to see if it helps. She's 11. A few months later she is feeling better. It takes time for some...
  8. Hey Stone, Sorry you haven't been feeling well lately, but I would say it is probably all the pizza dough and flour flying around. I read somewhere (don't you love that vague expression) that flour can stay in the air for up to 3 days. Whether the time frame is accurate doesn't really matter, but the fact that you are around it while it's flying is cause...

Cause we live in a world of instant gratification, the easy way out, the grab -n- go society. Celiacs + Meals = Planning! We just can't be spontaneous anymore. And truthfully, while it's a pain in the arse, it is healthier. And you made the right choice anyway, it just took you a minute! Good for you for not giving into your first thought. Blame it...
  10. I have no reactions when I eat gluten that I can see - but the silent war is going on in my small intestine. It is so hard to stay away from gluten for me, because of this, but if I don't many terrible things could happen in my future! The women in my family live well into their 90's. I don't want to break that cycle!
  11. Did you see this site about the book? Open Original Shared Link It has pdf pages you can review. It was written in 2007. I haven't heard of the book. Perhaps you can request your local library to get it then you wouldn't have to buy it. I do that alot. (I homeschool my two girls and use our library ALOT!)
  12. I would think they would run the Celiac Panel (4 bloodwork tests) to determine if any antibodies are being made. The usually run them once or twice a year. If they are high you are still getting gluten in you somehow. My GI recommended an upper GI w/in a year of diagnosis (I've only been gluten-free for 7 months) to see how healing is going. Not sure...
  13. I cooked my own Thanksgiving Feast, Celiac style and the only thing someone else made was my grandmother who wanted to make the stuffing for just me and my daughter. Fine, I said. She said she bought gluten free bread and has always been careful in the past. Lesson learned - she made it with Spelt Bread! My daughter didn't eat any since she doesn...
  14. Oohh, I like those ideas! Will have to experiment and try some other things after the holidays. My dog does have other food sensitivities but I could play around with various things. Rice cakes sound perfect! Have to see what else is in them... Thank you for your suggestions! :-)
  15. I also wanted to add that it will take you a while to get comfortable in your new skin. I didn't want you to think that it should be easy to go gluten-free. It's not! It is the hardest thing I've ever done, because it is so permanent. I equate it to mourning the death of a loved one. Of course, not quite as drastic, but you go through the same process...
  16. Hey Melissa, The dog food/treat issues are probably a little extreme, but it's what I'm doing right now. I was very vigilant the past 7 months, even changed my husbands toiletry items to gluten free. But the doc said to be more crazy about it. I've taken out alot of the gluten free flours that many are saying aren't truly gluten free or have a higher...
  17. I had a problem with coffee, too. Slowed down the amounts I was drinking to let my stomach heal, while taking Zantac. Has seemed to help and I can drink a bit of coffee again. And please don't think a bit of gluten will give you cancer! There hasn't been any proof of that that I have read and I've read alot because they thought I had small bowel cancer...
  18. I am so sorry you have to deal with this, but there are some great posts above for ideas. I LOVE the ideas about going to a dear friends house, someone who accepts you and whom you want to be around. I second the idea of helping in a homeless shelter/soup kitchen. I guess this is the chance to create your own new traditions for your immediate family. ...

  20. Why? Why? Why? Why Celiac Disease? I just don't understand why people think we over-react about being gluten free! It's not like it has a glamorous cure or that it is fun to be gluten free. Good Lord - people like your husband and the neighbor in the post above make me mad. What in the world do they think about diabetics or people with heart disease...
  21. Awwww, that is horrible!! I hope the meds kick in soon and make you feel better!
  22. Hi jess, and welcome! It can be so overwhelming - I remember when I was first told to go gluten-free after my endoscopy I was having a dinner party that night at my house! Don't expect to learn it all overnight. I am gluten-free for 7 months and I'm still learning. There are so many wonderful people on this site and you will learn more hear than from...
  23. Man Skylark, you sure know your way around!! Awesome tips - thanks!
  24. Here is a link to local support: Open Original Shared Link Zach is very proactive and has lots of resources. I will continue to search for others. There has got to be someone out there that can help you - that's just ridiculous!
