  1. I never would have thought of that. Most the stores I go to don't have belts. I either use the self check out or the cashier station is the type where you push the cart right up to the cashier and they bag from the cart and then either reload your cart or put your groceries into a new cart. I do carry wipes so that when they put my groceries into a new...
  2. Try some pearled barley or see if you can buy rye flour and make some bread/crackers from that with no other flours. I happen to have both a wheat allergy and gluten intolerance. I know about the wheat allergy becuase it showed up on allergy testing. However I also know I have a problem with at least barley because I got very sick when I ate soup with...
  3. I think you've got it. Just think of them as a snack, NOT a dessert and you will probably like them more.
  4. I'm one of those that like Lara Bars. For me, I love dates, raisins, craisin and other dried fruit along with plain nuts. I can eat any of those things just alone as a snack and that's pretty much all there is to Lara Bars. I think some people try them expecting them to taste just like their names--like the apple pie one does not taste anything like apple...
  5. Are all the medication they take gluten-free? The Nexium is especially concerning because I think I have read it may not be gluten-free. Since he is gluten-free now why don't you try taking him off the Nexium? ETA: Okay I did some searchign on Nexium. This is the FAQ from their website: Open Original Shared Link From that FAQ: "Does Nexium...

  7. That's so sweet of your husband! I think we will have Chinese tonight too. I had no ideas until I saw this thread, thanks for sharing. I am going to make Kung Pao chicken.
  8. Double check your brand of orange juice. Most are fine but I have seen one that had barley in the flavoring before. You could have trouble with the tomatoes or you could have trouble with the cheese since pizza and and mexican food have both usually. What brand of pizza/pizza crust are you eating? Many people have a gluten reaction to Amy's which I think...
  9. Could you have a secondary intolerance to dairy or soy? These intolerance can be mild and only act up when you eat a lot those items so that could be why you only notice when you are stressed. For example: do you drink more coffee when stressed? or eat more of a certain gluten-free convienence item because you don't have time to cook?
  10. As a theatre lover and former English buff myself I really appreciate your comments. My current artistic pursuits are painting and writing. I guess I just don't find it that interesting to talk about though. I used to be a recluse somewhat due to my social anxiety and now I am finding I want to talk to people but I don't exactly always know how! I suppose...
  11. The dreaded kid question! I haven't gotten that one in a while fortunately. They usually ask me "So, do you plan on having kids?" I respond with: "whenever God wants to give them to us we are ready." or something similar. That usually shuts them up. I do want kids very much even though my health isn't 100% yet. I plan to start charting again this...
  12. This sums it up for me at this point in my life. A year ago when I still sicker than I am now I desperately wanted to go back to work or school. Now I don't really want to. I might still get a part time job or start doing some additional volunteer work--and I am open to the possiblity that I may need to in the future to help us financially. But right...
  13. You're only half right. I currently have a pile of clean clothes on my dresser that has been there since monday waiting to get put away. I guess I don't have the excuse of having to go to work everyday and they could be put away now, but my days are not all leisurely. I also still have not recovered my memory well enough to read for pleasure. I can read...
  14. Thanks for bumping up my old thread and sharing your experiences too! I wrote this thread just 6 months after going gluten-free. I have gotten so much better healthwise since then (18+ months gluten-free/SF/DF) but my employment/school situation has not changed. I still get these questions but I try not to let them bother me. Since writing this I met...
  15. It did turn out fine! Not very pretty to look at on the plate, but tasted the same as cabbage rolls anyway. I'm pretty good at improvising. My other ideas if I had not had the shredded cabbage: 1. add another egg and shape the filling into a meatloaf 2. try filling rice paper wrappers with the stuffing and baking like enchiladas 3. baking some potatoes...
  16. First, let me preface this by saying I don't believe IBS is a real diagnosis. IMO IBS is what they tell you when they don't know what is making your bowels irritable. Now that said, when I get glutened I FEEL more stressed even if there is nothing to be stressed about. However, if you are sure that you are not getting glutened then your should see your...
  17. Okay, thanks! No Whole Foods anywhere near me (closest one is a 4 hour drive) but I often travel and go through some towns that have WF, so if I ever see it I'll pick some up.
  18. Thanks for the tip. I haven't seen Tom Sawyer anywhere around here. Do you have to order it online or do you find it in your stores? I get King Arthur multi-purpose flour from Kroger if anyone is looking for it. The only thing I don't like is they stock it right smack dab in the middle of all the gluten flours and the box is almost always covered with...
  19. I know this thread is super old but we have a bunch of new people on the board that I thought might enjoy reading it (I know I did when I first found the board) and contributing their experiences. My latest worst gluten-free product that I tried is Kinnikinnick personal pizza crusts. I love everything else they make that I have tried (donuts and cookies...
  20. You need to be asking the restaurant some specific questions if you are eating someplace without a gluten-free menu. There are dozens of ways it can be cc'd or contain gluten. What's in the seasoning on the chicken? Is it marinaded in anything that might have gltuen (soy sauce)? Is the chicken grilled on the same grill as other items that contain gluten...
  21. The information from above was posted in 2007 and things may have changed since then. That said, does the bottle you bought have wheat grass as an ingredient? If so it it not safe. Be warned: Some items with wheat grass or barley grass will also be labeled "gluten free" but don't trust that it means they are free enough of gluten to consume safely...
  22. I had to change my plans. My head of cabbage had a spots that looked like rot or mold or something going all the way through. Not single leaf was good. I already had my stuffing mixed up when I discovered it so I had to improvise. I had some shredded cabbage for coleslaw in the fridge and used that in layers with the filling in the slow cooker and then...
  23. We had leftovers with "make a random salad from the contents of the fridge and pantry" night. LOL. My husband's salad consisted of: Iceberg lettuce, bell peppers, onions, shredded carrots and peanuts. Mine had romaine, cucumber, shredded carrot, raisins, almonds and plantain chips. Both of us used homemade Italian dressing. I had leftover fish and husband...
  24. Are you still eating dairy? What about soy? Those are two common secondary food intolerances that can pop up after you go gluten free. Maybe try cutting one or the other (or both out) out if you are eating them frequently and see if you improve.
