ARCHIVED I'm Miffed - Need Advice
GlutenFreeManna replied to Newbee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It sounds like they made a great effort to accomodate you. I can understand not being able to eat out at very many places because there are only 2 or 3 places I can eat safely consistently (note, however, that this is more because of my other allergies and not just gluten). Had my family offered to LET ME CHOOSE the site of their reheasal dinner I would... -
Ditto what Kareng said. Take your own food and see if you can get someone you know to bring you gluten-free take-out. I've heard of a few hospitals that know their stuff and can feed us safely but they are the exception and not the average. Most hospital cafes are clueless as to what gluten-free means let alone being clued in to preventing CC. Don't...

ARCHIVED Good For Life Bread
GlutenFreeManna replied to Chad Sines's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've tried it once and it wasn't too bad. My only complaints were that it was a little too sweet and the slices were very thin and broke a apart easily. But if it's all I could find and I really wanted a sandwhich I would get it. The taste/texture were decent for gluten-free bread. -

Udi's and Rudi's are both dairy free but you're right they do have egg. You will have a hard time finding a commercial gluten-free bread that tasts good and is free of eggs, dairy and those oils. Sounds like you are either going to have to bake your own or use less expensive alternatives to bread such as rice cakes and corn tortillas. I seldom eat gluten... -

Here's a list from last year: Open Original Shared Link Keep in mind some things may have changed and may no longer be gluten-free. Several bloggers do take the time to contact companies and compile a new list each year. It usually gets posted here, so keep an eye out for an updated 2011 list. -

Udi's and Rudi's are among the most popular on the board. I have also heard good things about Canyon Bakehouse and Katz but I have never tried them. Whatever your do stay away from EnerG bread. That stuff is nasty! -

Are you outside the US or Cannada? Wheat or malt vinegar has to be labeled here. -
ARCHIVED Comparing Chips For Super Sensitives
GlutenFreeManna replied to T.H.'s topic in Super Sensitive People
Thanks for the research! I had also mentioned Grande brand chips but I can no longer reccomend them as I just noticed over the weekend that they stopped labeling their chips as gluten-free. I wonder if that means they are anticipating the new law and just not calling them gluten-free anymore because they are not tested. Anyway I was so sad to see the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Weirdness! - Suddenly I'm Bloating After Eating
GlutenFreeManna replied to lucia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gums are safe gluten-wise but some people don't tolerate them well and they often cause GI issuses (bloating, camping, gas, etc). If other brands of ricotta have not bothered you I would guess it's the combination of the three different gums in that brand causing the bloating. The milk and whey could do it for someone lactose intolerant too (which you can... -
ARCHIVED Good For Life Bread

I seem to also remmeber something about Food For Life putting barley water in their corn tortillas. I had their brown rice tortillas twice in one week and got very very sick (definitely a gluten reaction). I wrote them to complain and never got a reply. I don't trust any of their products at all now. -

ARCHIVED Just Need Advice To Take To Doctor
GlutenFreeManna replied to eccooke's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Since you have been gluten-free for 3 months blood tests and biopsy for celiac will likely be false negative. You would need to go back to eating gluten in the equivalent of 3-4 slices of bread per day for 3 months in order to get the blood tests and have a chance at accuaracy. Even then they could be false negative. Best to just keep on with the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Vietnamese Spring Roll Wrappers - Gluten Free!
GlutenFreeManna replied to lucia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Some mainstream grocery chains carry these in the international food section or Asian food section. Check in the aisle that has rice or in the aisle that has soy sauce and other similar condiments. The brands that my mainstream grocers carry, however, are the exactly the same as what I find at my Asian food stores. The only difference I find is the mainstream... -

ARCHIVED Celiac Attack, Has This Happened To You?
GlutenFreeManna replied to oldman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It really depends on where you live and how crowded the hospital is. I have been to ER's in 5 different states and only had one experience where I was waiting hours and hours to be seen. My one time being stuck in the ER all night (and eventually admitted) was when I had gallstones and I was also throwing up green bile into a bin. It was a nightmare because... -
Actually Germ-X is gluten free. I'm not sure about Purell. Hand sanitizers, however, will not get gluten off your hands (or the kids hands). The only way to get the gluten off is washing with soap and water.

ARCHIVED When The World Changed Forever

I was in college. In my early morning class someone said, "Hey, did you hear about the plane that crashed into the WTC?" We thought they meant an accident and didn't know it was anything serious. I got out of my class and when I got home my roommates had left the TV on. About 10 minutes after I got home the second plane crashed into the towers. I watched... -
ARCHIVED Doctor That Will Diagnose Based On Genetic Testing And Health History?
GlutenFreeManna replied to anniebeth's topic in Doctors
I know this is not what you want to hear but even with that "official diagnosis" your kids could choose to try eating gluten again when they move out and get on their own. I know of at least one person with a child that did just that--she had positive blood tests but went off the diet once in college. When the symptoms came back she went to the dr and... -
ARCHIVED Doctor That Will Diagnose Based On Genetic Testing And Health History?
GlutenFreeManna replied to anniebeth's topic in Doctors
There are one or two people on the board that have gotten drs to agree they have celaic based on their extreme symptoms when they eat gluten. I'm not sure if these are "offical" diagnoses written in their charts and all but it sounds like they are. I would think you should be able to request your kids be tested just by explaining your history to a dr that... -
ARCHIVED Is California Pizza Kitchen Committed to Gluten-Free? - Celiac.com
GlutenFreeManna replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I don't trust them at all. I went to a CPK when I was first diagnosed. This was before they had a gluten-free menu but they had allergen menu's on their website which I had printed and showed to the waiter. Granted, I did not know at that time to ask a ton of questions and it was one of my first attempts at eating out so I didn't know how sensitive I was... -
Beyond making the kids more responsible for clean up, maybe you could try to take foods that you don't have to touch to eat--things you can eat with utensils only like salad, or things you can drink instead of pick up with your hands like soup, yogurt, smoothies, etc. Still wash you hands lots of course but that way if you touch some gluten and forget it...

ARCHIVED Is Eating Pizza At A Restaurant Safe?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Newbee's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I had no trouble eating gluten-free pizza at Mellow Mushroom and Z-Pizza before I had to cut out dairy. Mellow Mushroom has a separate room and separate topping station only for gluten-free pizzas. Z-Pizza change their gloves, switch prep areas (it's open so I can watch them make the pizza) and makes the gluten-free pizza on foil. If you want to find... -
ARCHIVED Candy For A Party
GlutenFreeManna replied to GFreeMO's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Smarties in the US are gluten-free and casein free. In other countries they are a completely different candy--chocolate with a candy shell and not gluten-free (and probably not casein free). Just had to clarify. Carry on. -
ARCHIVED How To Convince Family Members To Get Tested?
GlutenFreeManna replied to ElseB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Actually, Funyuns don't have any gluten ingredients. Open Original Shared Link I know that's not quite the same as "gluten free" but it's unlikely the wheat in them that caused her to get sick since they don't have wheat. It could have been other ingredients, however. It is too bad that she won't get tested, however. My parents have the same...
