  1. I agree that the ones who cheat are probably mostly people with mild or no symptoms. They SHOULDN'T, of course, damage is still being done, but it's easier to ignore if you can't feel it. Like cigarette smoking when you are young and healthy, I suppose. We have 6 celiacs in our family, and the only one who cheats is an aunt who was totally asymptomatic, except...
  2. Researching kidney stones today (DH has them ), I was reminded that hyperoxaluria -excess oxalate in the urine - is a cause or aggravating factor in some cases of vulvodynia as well as kidney stones. And research shows that hyperoxaluria is common in people with intestinal disorders, and is related to malabsorption of fats and calcium. So that could be the...
  3. I haven't made any of the loaf breads or the rolls; come to think of it I liked the "Gluten-Free Kitchen" better, too. I have made the biscuits (corn-based), and my family liked them. Especially good if you add garlic and cheddar cheese. For regular loaf breads, I've been sticking to the Gluten-free Pantry's sandwich bread mix. Easy, and better than anything...
  4. I liked Roben Ryberg's books.
  5. Do you bake the bread to dry it out? How long and at what temperature?
  6. I would have just removed them and eaten it anyway, because I don't usually react to small amounts of gluten. But I understand that for many people here, that would not be an option. It comes down to what is comfortable for you and how sensitive you are.
  7. I like them toasted with butter and jelly. Udi's bagels are better, though.
  8. Many Protestant pastors will find a way to work with you if you are a church member. We have an extra church service at 8 o'clock in the morning - it is very small - only a dozen or so people usually show up, and we have only gluten-free bread at that service. I love my pastor I believe they also make gluten free available to a celiac choir member at the...
  9. Good for you - sounds yummy! It is so nice to show people our food can be as good as theirs (or better!) isn't it? I have done some good things with the Betty Crocker mixes also.
  10. I LOVE Outback! It is my very favorite place since gluten-free. I'm going tonight, AND having desert!
  11. Thanks all. My house is not completely gluten-free; there are regular bread and cereal and things for the gluten-eaters in separate cabinets. My toaster is seperate and all cooking is gluten free since I am the one doing it. My understanding was that Kix ingredients are safe, but made in a shared facility. I haven't been as careful as some of you are about...
  12. I don't get it. I haven't eaten anything outside of my own home except Uno's gluten free pizza - but that was three days ago. Could it take that long? What else? Kix? Jello mousse temptations? B&M beans? I've eaten all those things before without any reaction.

    ARCHIVED Newbie

In the US maltodextrin is usually made from corn, and if not it should say clearly "Contains wheat". I haven't had any trouble with maltodextrin.
  14. A few weeks ago, I dreamed someone asked me to buy Girl Scout cookies, and I burst into tears realizing I could never have peanut butter tagalongs again. Celiac sucks sometimes!
  15. I also had the "embarrassing symptom" before going gluten-free. It disappeared within a week and hasn't returned. It does sound very much like you have celiac. I don't know how much the military means to you, or much about their rules, but a medical discharge might be in the best interests of your health. I wish you the best of luck; also I am not sure how...
  16. has not set their status

  17. Charlie Brown's has a gluten free menu.
  18. Dry Rice Chex might be a good thing to bring to work and nibble on - easy on the stomach. Or some gluten free crackers. Then if that stays down, maybe some yogurt or fruit? Ginger ale. Eating little bits throughout the morning might stabilize your blood sugar. Good luck!
  19. For some reason, they have changed this recipe since I made it last week. The version I made called for 2 1/2 Progresso chicken broth, 1 1/2 cups cut up cooked chicken, 1 cup frozen vegetables, 1 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp pepper 1 cup milk and 3 TBS cornstarch to make the "soupy part". The dumplings look the same. The new version looks a little easier, but less...
  20. I made the Chicken and Dumplings from the Betty Crocker liveglutenfreely site. It was easy and good - my son's best friend (who isn't gluten-free) said it was "awesome". Nice to hear.
  21. I suppose it could just be food poisoning, too - random bacteria can happen to anyone, anywhere. Hope you feel better soon, anyway!
  22. I don't know a lot about testing, but have you considered just going gluten free as a family? Sounds like you are all at risk for developing celiac down the road, and that would head it off. And perhaps your son might have a growth spurt - it might be worth a try, anyway. Good luck!
  23. I imagine you have damaged your intestines further, and so they may take longer to heal. Why did you go back to eating gluten if it was working for you?
  24. It is quite common for celiacs to be unable to tolerate dairy. I suppose the thyroid medication could upset your stomach - almost any medicine can. Are you sure the thyroid medication is gluten-free? You also could still just be having stomach pains after only 2 months gluten free. I hope it is not cancer - does your doctor say why he suspects that?
