  1. Thanks for the detailed reply Yes I would love to see those abstract links regarding neurological damage if you can find them. My symptoms are mainly GI, but I do get depressed a few days after a big accidental glutening (uncontrollable crying, go figure). Occasionally I get a weak-feeling muscle or just general exhaustion. I also get the PMS...
  2. Hi TH, I really don't know if this is relevant to you, feel free to ignore if I've completely misread your post. This is for the reactions you feel away from home, at restaurants etc. I have no doubt that you are very sensitive to gluten, but maybe this explains some of the restaurant/on holiday/hiking reactions you've had? Was just mulling last...
  3. Hello and welcome < -- Self diagnosed here, after blood tests and biopsies were negative. I'd say that poisoning yourself with gluten for the purpose of attempting to get a definate diagnosis using tests that are known to have a high false-positive rate is not worth it It's useful if you're borderline, or symptoms of glutening are mild enough...
  4. Sounds like a potential seasonal allergy messing around with you? Another idea is Vitamin D deficiency? During summer you get more sun and therefore feel better, with fall sunlight exposure goes down and you start feeling crap? Long shot, but worth mentioning.
  5. Woah, sounds like you're extremely sensitive I wonder how gluten got into the hotel room - think people throw flour parties in there?? I guess I'm not surprised, previous inhabitants could have gone through a packet of biscuits and left crumbs and sticky fingers everywhere :/ Thanks for explaining your symptoms - does medication help at all? I'm...
  6. Hmmm... did you get multiple biopsies off all parts of your small intestine in that scope? Because damage can be patchy, and they may take samples from untouched areas, missing highly damaged areas of your intestine. How long have you been gluten free? Gorging on gluten for a week or two before seeing the GI won't really help - it takes a few months of...

    ARCHIVED Oh Boy...

It constantly amazes and amuses me how people can find the "Yahoo answers" website to ask a question, but can't use Google to just figure it out themselves! A simple search on gluten would have told the person what it is. Stupid question indeed!
  8. Excellent advice from WheatChef Before going gluten-free I never ever had issues with constipation, I always had my stomach working the other way, but afterward I started having issues with const. I figured it might be that my intestines are so used to d, that they need to learn how to work normally again Of course, it could definitely be all...
  9. Some people are sensitive to garlic and onion. Sometimes they can tolerate it cooked, but not raw. Do you have trouble with raw onion at all? Or it could have been bacteria or just too rich a meal Hope you're feeling better!
  10. I think the soaking and the more old-fashioned long cooking processes breaks down the lectins inherent in grains. Lectins can affect some people badly. Here's a good blog article on leptins and lectins and why grains can be bad for you: Open Original Shared Link Not sure how sound his science is, but it's certainly food for thought, hehe.
  11. bridgetm - it's not doing the trick because it's lacking the opioid peptides your body is "craving". I've also heard wheat and dairy can be addictive, and also that oats can also have break down into opioid peptides that can have similar effects. I know how you all feel though, I get such crazy cravings (Not while I'm sick from being accidentally...
  12. Hi there, I've found gluten to be a very sneaky substance. If you've been off gluten for a while, you might find you won't react instantly to the first bit of gluten you ingest, especially if you're not the super sensitive type. Now that I'm gluten free, I don't always get a huge GI reaction from accidental gluten exposure - it's becoming more...
  13. About your drugged up feeling - I get a weird feeling like my muscles are super weak, along with the GI symptoms. It's really odd This has got to be one of the strangest damn diseases anyone can have I'm finding my "intolerances" affect me worse GI wise, and gluten is causing more of the neural/DH outbreak/panic/anxiety problems. So often my first...
  14. Ooh, just had an idea - have you tried blending up food? Like veges and fruit? Maybe that would make it more palatable for you, and easier for your stomach to digest and absorb?? Have you tried grains like buckwheat or quinoa? Hope you figure out something that works for you soon
  15. I think it will be *really* worth it for you to see a nutrionist/dietician who is very familiar with celiac disease. It's hard to pinpoint problem foods when you're feeling sick all the time. One suggestion - I was taking enzymes with my food at first, and feeling sick with every meal. Turned out the enzymes had some sort of gluten contamination -...
  16. It appears that Quinoa doesn't agree with me either I've always rinsed it well - scrubbed the seeds between my fingers and rinsed until clear, as well as rinsing after cooking. It was pure quinoa so no cc with wheat, and there were definitely no wheat-like particles amongst the quinoa seeds. Was fine the first week of eating it, had a break of a week...
  17. Thanks for all the responses! I'm definitely going to cut out the processed cereals and switch to self-cooked whole grains (Like Quinoa and rice) for my "breakfast".
  18. So now that I'm more and more gluten free, and I'm still learning what I shouldn't be eating - I find that I'm getting *more* DH outbreaks. Note that I haven't been to a dermatologist, I don't like wasting my money, so it hasn't been confirmed that it's definitely DH. They're not too extensive fortunately, they're like itchy pimples that develops...
  19. I have ridiculous craving for bready, doughy evil stuff It's actually not even funny, I just avoid bakeries full stop. This was both before and after going gluten free. After gluten free, dairy started being a bit of a problem as well, and the cravings are there for any dairy as well - mainly milk, cheese and ice-cream. Hmmm....
  20. I've been mostly gluten-free since July, with a day or two of "gluten challenging" when I was feeling brave since then. I'm just worried that I'll send off for these tests and it'll come back negative because I've been off gluten? Should I do a gluten challenge just in case, to be safe, and for how long? How many of you did the testing after being...
  21. Well I'm planning on shipping from South Africa 0.o So no, I don't think it'll remain frozen in transit... But I guess if it can make it in 2 or 3 days time in a refrigerated area it will be fine. I guess that's why they detail you should state it's a biological sample - so it'll be kept refrigerated?
  22. As a last-ditch resort, if you still feel it's something you're eating - maybe try keeping a food journal? Do you think the symptoms come and go, or some days you feel better than others? When did you do the elimination diet - might be worth doing it again, since some people find new intolerances developing or rearing their head after being gluten-free...
  23. My hubby says this to me sometimes, I try keep the lid on my anger because he really just doesn't understand. I tried to compare it to a peanut allergy, but he really just rolled his eyes at me. Otherwise he's very understanding about it, and even saved me a few times from eating something unsafe. He just doesn't understand why even a little bit could...

    ARCHIVED Spot The Gluten

My rejoicing was short lived. I am still reacting to the new flour mix - sore stomach etc. I'm starting to wonder if it's the butter in the biscuits... Sore stomach being caused by milk as well, so I've switched back to dairy free. Doesn't help eating out once a week or so - just as I start feeling better I gluten myself on some steak. I just hate...
  25. Sounds like you've got all your bases well covered. I'd say just keep it up, it sounds like you're still healing? Take it easy and keep the stress down. Even with being gluten intolerant we may have further issues like Chrons, "IBS" with a stress trigger etc. By the way, if you're still struggling with anxiety/panic attacks, I highly recommend "The...
