ARCHIVED This Is All So Overwhelming...
Monklady123 replied to crissy82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is hard at the beginning, but it doesn't have to be. The easiest thing to remember is that the ONLY things you have to avoid on a gluten free diet are wheat, barley, and rye (and oats if they're not certified gluten free, because of cross contamination). Everything else in its natural state is gluten free. Meat, vegetables, fruit, beans, legumes, dairy... -
ARCHIVED What's A Good Gluten Free Book For An 82-Year-Old?
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone. Looks like Gluten Free For Dummies is in her future. I can hear her reply now: "so you think I'm a dummy, eh?" lol.... (she'll be joking) That book Gluten Free on a Shoestring looks good also. I may get one of those for myself. Lol. I think I will print out some things from here also. She'll do fine on her own without me there all... -
ARCHIVED What's A Good Gluten Free Book For An 82-Year-Old?
Monklady123 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My mother finally decided to take my suggestion to try a gluten free diet, because of diarrhea for almost three weeks! (plus other symptoms that she's had on and off for awhile). I explained to her about not going gluten free if she thought she might want a biopsy. Her reply to that was "what? more tests? No way, not if I can help it!" lol... So, she... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Just Not Join In?

Yes, potlucks are from the devil. (I'm in the religion business, so this is the gluten free ministers' joke, lol). Anyway, I do several different things depending on what the occasion is. I sing in a choir that rehearses from 7-9 once a week. For some reason this group of people thinks we need a snack at 8:00 when we take a short break. I don't understand... -
Oh yes, about the utensil problem. I have solved it, but it sure did take me awhile, and more than once forgetting. Thankfully I do work in a hospital so plastic forks are available, but they're the cheesy chintzy flimsy kind that bend if you look at them. So I bought myself a lunch bag that has a separate zippered pouch on top. The bag is rectangular...

I had this same problem in the fall with an course I'm taking. It's a fellowship-type thing in a hospital. At the end of the four months we have a little "graduation" and a lunch that's catered by the food service at the hospital. Well seriously, the only thing I feel confident eating in that cafeteria is the hard-boiled eggs. Anyway, the director of my...

ARCHIVED Celiac Means No Coffee?
Monklady123 replied to moose07's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't stop that morning cup of coffee just yet. And you know how people say to us "I would DIE if I couldn't eat bread!" and we reply (to ourselves) "no you wouldn't." Well... seriously...I would DIE without my morning coffee. (Go ahead, think to yourself "no you wouldn't." But I'm telling you that yes I would!) -
ARCHIVED How Do You Afford It?
Monklady123 replied to lynxigirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is hard in the beginning, that's for sure. And I can't talk about pet food because I didn't change our dog's food so I know nothing about that. But, about the cost of "normal" vs. "celiac" food. You don't really have to spend more money than normal unless you were eating all inexpensive processed stuff before. Rice and beans is an international dish... -
ARCHIVED Potlucks - "luck Of The Pot"

This is what annoys me about so much of this stuff. If the pharmacist/waiter/whoever looked me in the eye and said "I'm sorry, I don't know. But let me try to find out for you" then I wouldn't be annoyed. But when they basically brush me off as if I'm too much trouble...well then I'm mad. I just recently got the "I don't think so" answer from the HEAD...

ARCHIVED Celiac In The Real World
Monklady123 replied to Sarunski's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It really is not more expensive to eat gluten free if you avoid the packaged convenience stuff, and cookies, etc. Bread will probably be more expensive but on the other hand I find I eat way less of it. So a loaf probably lasts just as long as a gluteny one did. I love Udi's with peanut butter for breakfast, but don't like it as sandwiches. I bring my... -
I just looked on Wendy's website -- the nutritional information opens in a pdf file and the natural fries do NOT contain wheat. On the chart they have a blue dot which means that they "may be fried in the same oil as other foods" (or however they worded that). The items with the RED dots are the ones that actually contain wheat. So, the natural fries on...

I eat cottage cheese all the time and never have problems. Now, I wouldn't necessarily eat it from a salad bar or something like that. You never know what might have fallen in it. But from my own refrigerator no problem.

ARCHIVED It's Hard To Stay Gluten Free
Monklady123 replied to h.leah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, they are! I'm sorry for you all in Sweden. (I love Sweden, in fact I've been there several times... just teasing...because Snickers is my absolute favorite candy bar.) -
ARCHIVED It's Hard To Stay Gluten Free
Monklady123 replied to h.leah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it must be really difficult to be gluten free if you're still living at home and in school which means you don't have an income of your own. I think the key will be for you to find substitutes for all the things you really want to eat. So for example, if you love potato chips (who doesn't? lol...) but the ones you were eating have gluten, then... -
ARCHIVED Sharing A Hospital Gluten-Free Experience
Monklady123 replied to T.H.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I work in a hospital and I will tell the OP that this is NOT at all unusual, sadly. The only thing I'm not afraid to eat from our cafeteria is the hard-boiled eggs. I was in with a diabetic patient recently who kept telling me she was hungry and kept asking me to bring her some food. I checked and the nurse told me that food was on the way, it had... -
ARCHIVED Kinnikinnick's New Soft Bread And Baguette
Monklady123 replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The soft bread sounds yummy, I'll have to look around and see if we have it anywhere here (east coast USA). But for the baguette -- have you tried Against The Grain? In my area we can buy it at Whole Foods. It is SO similar to a "real" baguette. In my store they're in the freezer section, and they're much smaller than the long baguette you buy in the paper... -
ARCHIVED Today I Will Gluten Myself On Purpose!
Monklady123 replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm glad you had enough ingredients to make a new batch so you can eat it. I wouldn't have eaten the other one either. Now, as another person said, you have plenty to freeze for nights when you might not be home, or maybe when you're not feeling well and you wouldn't want to eat much anyway. You can just thaw the gluteny stew for the family. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Rotisserie Chicken
Monklady123 replied to MaryJones2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No, of course I can't "show proof" since I'm not planning to buy one so that I can send you the label. You'll have to take my word for it that the ingredients say "allergen: wheat". I'm not trying to be snarky here but I don't understand when people question things like this. Recently someone else did it when I posted about the Goya Maria gluten free... -

ARCHIVED Went To A Party Last Night.... With A Wonderful Host!
Monklady123 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This was a retirement party for my husband's boss. About 25 or so people. It wasn't a sit-down dinner, just one where you fill your plate then go find a place to sit among several rooms and seating areas. So I didn't bother to tell the hostess anything about gluten, figuring that there is always salad. Or something. Anyway, I didn't want to be a problem for... -
ARCHIVED Goya gluten-free Products

Green box, "Maria" cookies, big letters on the box: GLUTEN FREE. And they taste yummy. -
ARCHIVED Haha Guess I Won't Be Eating There.....
Monklady123 replied to WinterSong's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I work in a hospital so I am not the least bit surprised at this story. Sad, but true. The only real food that I feel confident eating at our cafeteria are the hard-boiled eggs. That and a couple of packaged things like Fritos. Needless to say, I bring my own food. My best -- if you can call it that -- story is when I was calling around to pizza... -
ARCHIVED Goya gluten-free Products
Monklady123 replied to BabsV's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love Goya! I've just discovered their "Maria" cookies which are gluten free. And MUCH less expensive than other gluten free cookies because there are so many in the box. And on top of all that, they taste good! Yes, I wish all companies could be like Goya. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Rotisserie Chicken
Monklady123 replied to MaryJones2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The only one I know about is Giant grocery store chickens and they are NOT gluten free. I always buy Costco's, even if I go in just for the chicken. Yes, I've learned how to go into Costco for just one thing. The cashiers always comment on it and I tell them that this chicken is gluten free, bigger than Giant's, and cheaper. What's not to like?
