ARCHIVED Question About Starbucks Skinny Peppermint Latte
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree. My problem is that there isn't any other place to hang out and wait while dd is at dance class. She takes two classes back-to-back for a total of two hours. And we live just far enough from the studio that it's not worth it to me to drop her off, drive home, be home for about 45 minutes then drive back. -- But, what I should do is just get hot tea... -
ARCHIVED Question About Starbucks Skinny Peppermint Latte
Monklady123 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, I know I can google or search this site. I have. Google hasn't helped me. I do find some threads on here about Starbucks but they're either old or they're about other drinks. My question is specifically about the Skinny Peppermint Latte. (or is it the Skinny Peppermint Mocha Latte?) -- it's the one that's listed on the boards as "100 calories for a tall... -
My philosophy is that if you feel better not eating gluten then you shouldn't eat gluten. Who cares what the test says? There are all sorts of variables on that biopsy anyway. If you feel better then don't eat gluten.

Thanks for the recipe. I think I might try it next time I want pizza.

ARCHIVED So How Was Thanksgiving?
Monklady123 replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mine was great, because I'm the cook! lol... It's just the four of us usually, plus sometimes some extra "stranded" people -- like this year we had a friend of ds's from college who didn't have anywhere to go this year. But that type of guest never brings anything prepared so it's not a problem. (this kid brought me a bottle of wine because he *just* turned... -
When I order out I also get mine from zPizza. When I called to ask about it I was totally reassured by his reply. First of all when I said "if I asked to talk to you about gluten free pizza would you know what I was talking about?" his reply was "oh yes, now let me tell you how we handle that." (compared to Vocelli's whose response was "huh?" sigh...) --...

ARCHIVED Heard Of Celiac Crisis?

Good points, all of them. -
ARCHIVED Purposely Glutened

I was thinking the same thing about therapy. Also not meaning to be snarky...but it's not that those of us who have said we can resist are "superior" or anything -- although that was the tone of one of the previous replies -- it's just that if it makes me really sick then I have NO desire to do it. When I was dieting I would cheat, because I knew I could... -
ARCHIVED Always Check That List Of Ingredients....
Monklady123 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My dh has been overseas. He just got back, bearing gifts as usual. One of them was chocolate. He handed me a yummy-looking chocolate/coffee filled German confection. Ingredients only in German. Thanks to the internet and the German/English translation sites I was able to discover that "Gerstenmalz" is "barley malt". I first put in "gerstenmalz" and came... -
ARCHIVED Hospitals Are "healthy" Places, Right? Accommodating Celiac... ?
Monklady123 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Not. I'm doing a fellowship program (for chaplaincy) at a local hospital. At the end of this "semester" in mid-December there's a program for those who are finished (I'll be doing one more unit after Christmas) and a lunch. It wouldn't bother me at all to bring my own lunch. The only thing I've bought in the hospital cafeteria is a hard-boiled egg... -
Yes. My "tip" for how to make yourself feel better is to stop eating gluten. That's all I've got. It makes me so MAD, these doctors!

ARCHIVED Even At The Hospital... People Don't Understand
Monklady123 replied to DonnaMM's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've just started working at a hospital (since mid-September) and the only thing I've been brave enough to eat in our cafeteria are the hard-boiled eggs. I figure they can't do anything to that! Sometimes I get one for breakfast, other times I buy it in the morning and eat it for lunch with whatever else I've brought from home. I hate actually *fixing... -
ARCHIVED Here's A Silver Lining To Celiac.... Weight Watchers!
Monklady123 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lol. I went on Weight Watchers a couple of years ago and lost 50 pounds. That was before I had to be gluten free. So, as do many people who lose weight, I stopped being so careful and gained back 20 pounds. Now I'm back on WW, still using the old points system because I haven't yet been able to get to a meeting to learn about the new plan. But, I... -
ARCHIVED Why Do Some People Feel They *must* Have An Endoscopy?
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for all your replies. A very interesting discussion. I guess it makes sense to have the test if there is some concrete reason relating to work or insurance or something like that. (however, personally, if I had to do the gluten challenge I wouldn't be *able* to work). Well, I had a "borderline" blood test, and that combined with my immediate... -
ARCHIVED Why Do Some People Feel They *must* Have An Endoscopy?
Monklady123 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
After reading more than one thread where people are talking about blood tests vs. endoscopy I'm curious....why do some people think they have to get a "definitive diagnosis" or "proof of celiac" or whatever. I mean, if you go gluten free and you feel significantly better then what difference does it make it you have celiac or not? Why do you have to "prove... -
ARCHIVED Purposely Glutened
Monklady123 replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No. I have no desire to feel that bad. I LOVE pizza, brownies, and chewy bread. But not even those can tempt me. And, I can find good substitutes if I really want to. No. -
ARCHIVED The Good Over The Bad Of Celiac
Monklady123 replied to New Community Member's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well since ALL food is gluten free except for wheat, barley, and rye (and oats depending on the person) this has taught me to give up a lot of the processed food I was eating and to cook more. So now instead of fixing one of those boxed rice mixes I make plain rice and spice it up, or cook it with broth, or with veggies in it, or something. We're eating much... -
ARCHIVED Made Myself Sick For Nothing
Monklady123 replied to txplowgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is exactly why I'm never going to do a gluten challenge. I don't care if I don't have the "gold standard" of diagnostic tools. I know that if I eat gluten I feel terrible. If I don't eat it I feel good. Why does it matter if we have a diagnosis? I've never understood this. Sorry OP, I don't mean to sound uncaring. I'm sorry you were sick on the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Kids Selling Gluten!
Monklady123 replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Omg I hate these fundraising things. Hate them. Fortunately I never have to buy from any kid who comes to my door because I have kids right on my block who attend our elementary school, our middle school, and our high school. So I buy from them and then I tell everyone else "oh I'm sorry but I've already bought my *insert whatever here* for this year." ... -
ARCHIVED How Can I Be So Stupid?
Monklady123 replied to stewartfan14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, join the club. My best one of those "duh" moments was back when I was first gluten free. I bought some "wheat free" cookies, Newman's I think they were. Like oreo cookies. Ate a couple -- okay, more than a couple -- then not too long after that I was in the bathroom. *Then* I read the ingredients and saw barley. And only then did I see, in smaller... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge: Tips?!
Monklady123 replied to healinginprogress's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have no suggestions, but I'm wondering why anyone feels they need a "definitive diagnosis"? seriously... if you feel good when you're off gluten and terrible when you're on it...well then why does it matter to you if you have a diagnosis? I'm using "you" in the general sense, not specifically to the OP. I don't understand why anyone would put themselves... -
Yum. This is one of my favorite breakfasts. In fact, I just bought some Udi's yesterday. Guess what I'm having for breakfast? lol.

ARCHIVED Went Shopping
Monklady123 replied to BobbyKat LittleCub's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It will get better. Really. The thing I've learned after being gluten free for a bit over a year now, is that I just have to "suck it up" (as my kids say) and cook. If you think about cooking from scratch then just about everything is gluten free. In fact, the only things that are not gluten free are wheat, barley, rye. (and probably oats.) So... -
ARCHIVED I'm Miffed - Need Advice
Monklady123 replied to Newbee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Since the restaurant said it would be okay to bring in your own food then you could bring all sorts of things that would only have to be heated in the microwave. (I'd check that first though, with the restaurant, just to be sure.) Personally, I'd order a drink and a salad and enjoy the company. But that's just me... I hate being fussed over. -
ARCHIVED Best Pasta For A Baked Pasta Dish?
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks everyone. I have eaten the rice pasta but have never baked with it. I picked up a box of this corn pasta when I was out of town recently because I hadn't seen it here at home. Big mistake. ick. I'll try the rice kind next time.
