ARCHIVED Cross-Contamination?
scarlett77 replied to BrooklynFamily's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Look for things with Vitamin E (AKA Tocopheryl) or "tri" words such as "triticum" which means wheat. Not all "tri" words are wheat though so you do need to do some homework on them. Some brands are better at being up front with labeling by actually stating things like "wheat" on their labels. I tend to trust more in those brands along with user feedback... -
ARCHIVED Perfume
scarlett77 replied to Becksabec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Darn, I was hoping that it was on the packaging or something. I don't *think* it would be a problem really as long as you were extra careful when you sprayed it. If you really want to be sure, I would ask them for an ingredient list or MSDS and look at that. If there are any ingredients that may look questionable to you like tocopherols then call them back... -
ARCHIVED Is There A gluten-free Bun In The Oven?
scarlett77 replied to K8ling's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes having 2 close together is most definitely an adventure ;-) My youngest 2 are only 16 months apart. Well I hope it turns out the way you want it to. Keep us posted! -
ARCHIVED Perfume
scarlett77 replied to Becksabec's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What are the ingredients for it? I can't find an ingredients list for it to help me decide how questionable it is. -
ARCHIVED I Don't Know What To Expect
scarlett77 replied to dkelm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know the feeling...you just want the answers now so that you can figure out how to help your baby. The answers just can't seem to come fast enough. I don't think anything is too rushed. I think that you are on the right track and your doctor seems to be competent and thorough. I do want to say that you do NOT want to alter his diet before all the tests... -
ARCHIVED Share Your Favorite Cold Meals
scarlett77 replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We'll do smoothies or sandwiches. We also do nachos a lot: corn chips (either store bought or previously homemade) with shredded monterey jack, pinto beans or black beans, salsa, and sometimes some avocado. We use the microwave to melt the cheese onto the chips with the beans before adding the other toppings. I'm not big on cold dinners so a lot of times... -
ARCHIVED Cross-Contamination?
scarlett77 replied to BrooklynFamily's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have found that the things hardest to figure out were the non-food items. There are some companies I would trust over others since some actually do care to make it a point to be brutally honest about their ingredients, factories, and production lines. I also Google search to see what other Celiacs have to say about products or product lines. Yes it is true... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Know What To Expect
scarlett77 replied to dkelm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know almost exactly what you are going through since it so similar to my own story with my son. To give you the run down of what I experienced: Born 11/3/07 at almost 9lbs stayed in the 70-90% range until solids introduced at 6months then started going down. By 15months he finally hit 20lbs (quit BF around 14 months), at 18 months dropped 1lb by 20months... -
ARCHIVED I Just Want To Feed My Kid
scarlett77 replied to StephanieL's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Try pinto or black beans and spanish rice...my boys practically live off of it. Make your own taco seasoning (you can google taco seasoning mix) and season the beans with it. I found a soy free soy sauce subsitute that may work well to use for some chicken fried rice (minus eggs of course). Ingredients 8 fl.oz Molasses 3 fl.oz. Balsamic Vinegar Sugar... -
I would look in to your vitamin K levels. It was something they were concerned about with my son but fortunately we didn't have a problem. I can only imagine how horrifying and worrisome that would be. I hope you figure it out!

ARCHIVED Family Going Gluten Free
scarlett77 replied to JeepMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have found that Google is one of my very best resources. Say I want to make gluten free Mongolian Beef, I just Google it and BAM I get links to recipes. Sometimes it is a bit of trial an error by taking a regular muffin recipe you see in Better Homes and replacing the gluten ingredients with gluten-free ingredients. Eventually by looking at enough recipes... -
ARCHIVED How Many Are Not Gluten Free
scarlett77 replied to 4boysmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am not 100% gluten free. My 2 year old son is diagnosed Celaic. Our household is 99% gluten while at home. The only time we are not gluten free is when we eat out (which is not often). So nope you are not alone here -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Non-Celiac And Gluten
scarlett77 replied to Pac's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
With very, very few exceptions everything in the house is gluten-free so when at home ALL of 5 of us eat gluten-free. Now when eating out hubby and my daughter will usually eat non-gluten-free. 8 times out of 10 I will eat gluten-free even when we are out in the event that the boys want to pick off my plate. I don't mind. If I do have gluten it is usually... -
ARCHIVED Growth Hormone
scarlett77 replied to Liddle4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If your talking about thyroid then yes, my son takes thyroid medication. He's on .25MCG of levothyroxine daily. We aren't sure whether or not this is a secondary autoimmune disorder or if it is temporary. We have to continue monitoring his levels. Did you have a specific question about medication or something? -
ARCHIVED Top Three Worst Gf Products
scarlett77 replied to anerissara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
1) I'm with the person that said all bread except Udi's. My husband went to the store and came back with some other brand recently and man that thing was heavy as a brick! 2) I tried Kinnick's bagels and while they weren't inedible they tasted nothing like bagel. They tasted more like biscuits. 3) Bob's Red Mill pancake mix. Terrible. Fave's: ... -
ARCHIVED Confused About This Product
scarlett77 replied to CVRupp's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OMG Fruity & Cocoa Pebbles are gluten-free?!?!?!?! It's always nice when you can add a bit more variety to breakfast offerings. I learn something new everyday, thanks!! -
ARCHIVED Getting Married, Scared For My Future Children
scarlett77 replied to gfreegirlie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Don't look at it as a curse...look at it as an opportunity to teach about all the great foods out there that CAN be eaten. Think outside the box. And honestly if you introduce this type of eating lifestyle from the beginning they will not know any different. Yes there are the social occasions and eating out that is a pain...but if you teach them well it will... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Suspect Other People Have Celiacs?
scarlett77 replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I suspect that several of my husband's family members have Celiac. One nephew in particular has had major bowel issues almost all his life. I provided information to his mom (my sister-in-law) and she seemed receptive at the time but has never bothered to test him or change his diet. She and her oldest daughter also have severe stomach issues. She also had... -
ARCHIVED 4 Month Old - Questions...
scarlett77 replied to JELCrawford's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm not sure if this is helpful to you but my son's symptoms were not obviously Celiac. His stools weren't loose because he also had thyroid issues that were causing constipation. His iron was incredibly low when we ran the first blood panel. The doc put him on iron drops as well as vitamin drops w/iron. Even now it is hard to tell if he has had an accidental... -
ARCHIVED Growth Spurt?
scarlett77 replied to kerrig's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son gained 3lbs and almost 3in in height in less than 3 months. He has kind of leveled off since then though but he is at least back on the charts for both height and weight. -
ARCHIVED Which French Fries Can We Have?
scarlett77 replied to Kelly&Mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My son can't eat McD's fries. We only eat In& Out fries. Otherwise we make them at home. Like someone else said...fries are difficult to find without CC issues. I can say that we recently went to Disneyland and there are quite a few of the places in the park that have a specially dedicated fries fryer specifically for gluten-free guests. -
ARCHIVED Is Gluten Challenge Worth It To Get Diagnosis For School?
scarlett77 replied to Chakra2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is funny that you ask this as I myself am struggling with a similar situation. I really appreciate the responses since they are completely in line with my logic. My oldest son went through the blood work and endoscopy and got a diagnosis. At the time though we weren't entirely sure what the problem was. Our household went gluten-free which includes my... -
ARCHIVED 4 Month Old - Questions...
scarlett77 replied to JELCrawford's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It certainly wouldn't hurt for you to go gluten free and see if there is a difference. That is probably what I would do. My son was a bit older when he started his decline (9months). He was 90% at birth and then at 9 months he dropped down under 50%. By 15 months he was at 10% and then at his 18month check up he lost a pound. We did a weight check 2 months... -
ARCHIVED Could My 5 Year Old Be Suffering From Celiac/gluten Intolerance?
scarlett77 replied to Neali's topic in Doctors
My son was under 2 years when he went through the blood panels and endoscopy to diagnose. From what I recall for the endoscopy he was given an oral medication to make him a bit drowsy/dopey and then they administered the general anesthetic. It was a very quick procedure and he was in recovery in about an hour or less. I can understand your hesitation with...
