  1. I keep powdered buttermilk in my kitchen. It keeps for a long time and comes wither in envelopes that make 1 cup when mixed with water or a container where you can scoop out what you need. Just put the powder in with the dry ingredients and the appropriate amount of water in with the wet. No need to mix it up seperate. It is usually in the grocery aisle with...
  2. Of course, I have been doing this for years. There were no "gluten free" menus 20 years ago when I was diagnosed. I order broiled or grilled veal, steak, fish, no toppings. Baked or mashed potatoes, veges, salad, no croutons and have never had a problem. Lots of fine dining restaurants also serve, flourless chocolate torte, sorbets, chocolate mouuse etc....
  3. Yes, wonderful and at the beach today with absolutely no ill effects so they know what they are doing. When I told the waiter I had not had fried calimari in 20 years he said "it's not difficult to just do it with rice flour." He was surprised more restaurants don't offer it.
  4. Anyone visiting or living in RI has got to try this place. I have been hearing about their gluten free menu on the radio. I went last night and it has one of the most extensive gluten free menus I have ever seen. I had crispy fried calimari which I haven't had in 20 years!!!!! They have pizzas, veal and chicken parmesan with pasta. All kinds of pasta creations...

  8. Sounds like someone i work with who has Crohns disease. She knows exactly what will bother her and eats it anyway then we all have to listen to her complain about how sick she is. When people do this they deserve what they get.
  9. I just use the allergy explanation too. No one really needs or wants the details and I don't need to get into it.

  11. Sandwiches on Udi's bread. I make them ahead of time for the beach and they keep well in the cooler. With fruit and chips.
  12. OOPS! sorry. those of us diagnosed 20 years ago still remember the old rules when tings weren't clearly marked. Sorry, dating myself.
  13. Buckwheat is actually not wheat but a berry. Do be aware, as someone else here said, most buckwheat pancake recipes also use regular flour. I have replace that with fine white corn flour and they came out great.
  14. 15. Things like modified food strarch. Some labels will say after it from: corn or rice or wheat. If it doesn't tell you the source don't use it. Also anything from malt like malt vinegar because malt is from barley. Maltodextrin is OK and gluten free. Wishbone robusto italian dressing is gluten free and does say so in small print on the back where the ingredient...

  17. Back when I was diagnosed one of my main symptoms was eight loss, among others. I am 5'4" and had gone down to 100 lbs. As soon as I went gluten free and was actually able to absorb nutrients I began gaining weight. 10 lbs. in the first week and slowly after that. About 6 months I was at 130 and have been the same weight now since 1991. I suspect you will...
  18. Also Lukasowa, Chopin and Ciroc vodka, not to mention rum and tequila!!
  19. I think you know not eating gluten makes your symptoms go away so you have your answer. What more do you need?
  20. I don't bother with any of that. thee are always choices on restaurant menus. I don't need a specially labeled one. When we flew to Europe for 2 weeks I made sure I had gluten-free snacks in my carry on for the trip over. For the trip back, there were grocery stores everywhere so I got fruit and nuts and snacks for the trip back. While there, we only needed...
  21. Many restaurants, even local ones, now have menus on line. You could also take a look ahead of time and even if they don't have a seperate gluten-free menu you'd have an idea of what dishes to ask about.
  22. You don't need a special menu. I was diagnosed 20 years ago and there were no special menus. Doesn't mean I never eat out. On the contrary, even ate out for 2 weeks in Europe last year. Just look for things on any menu that were never intended to have toppings or sauces. Plain grilled fish ( I always ask to have not breadcrumb topping or flour coating), grilled...
  23. Regular sushi is fine but you may need to bring your own wheat free soy sauce. LaChoy is wheat free.
